Apparently Flores Stopped Communicating mid season...

EricJ : 1/15/2022 6:43 am
just listened to an interview from someone in the inside. He said Flores stopped speaking to his assistants at around Thanksgiving. The assistants executed a game plan each week without Flores' help or input. So, it is possible that Flores should not be given too much credit for that 8 game winning streak.

You can hear it on the attached redit thread. Not sure how much weight to put into this, but it needs to be looked into further before we consider hiring this guy.
Flores Stopped Communicating - ( New Window )
Something very strange

I wouldn’t take that literally

Sounds he wasn’t sharing his thinking, but still working with his staff.
If true Flores has no one to blame but himself

I would have moved on from Flores also...a no brainer....

about Dan Quinn? He’s the one who turned Dallas around this year, not the nitwit McCarthy... I think he’ll be better in his second HC gig. Thoughts?
No

I would prefer Patrick Graham to Flores. Defense has been criticized for playing off receivers ( on this site), but despite constant turnover in players due to injuries and Covid, the defense looked organized and played together. Treating people with respect and having open lines of communications are essential traits for a CEO.
I wouldn't take a reporter's word for it, but it's worth investigating

HomerJones45 : 1/15/2022 8:47 am : link
these guys all show up thinking they are the shit, they know everything and when things don't go their way they pout and throw tantrums.

Let's not forget the Dolphins started 1-7 or 1-8 this year. Obviously, the talent on that team is pretty good. I think that bad start + not making the playoffs + his prickly ways = Bye Bye Brian. He's not worth the bullshit if he is not making the playoffs.
see my last sentence...
EricJ : 1/15/2022 9:06 am : link
like I said.. it needs to be investigated before pulling the trigger if he is a serious candidate.

It could be BS, but ignoring it and not going the appropriate due diligence is a good way to end up with another Judge.

This doesn’t sound good. Just as I was starting to like the idea.

Don’t want to become the Cleveland Browns of the next Eric Mangini story.

Flores is definitely more old school. He could be a hard ass. Not sure that works anymore.
A lot of smoke
AcesUp : 1/15/2022 9:53 am : link
Could be a smear campaign by the Dolphins because firing Flores was not a good look, especially when courting other coaches. It's kind of been known that their FO has some dysfunction, so a tiny grain of salt may be necessary. However, if 25% of the shit coming out about Flores is true then I wouldn't want him here.
There was a power struggle there
AcesUp : 1/15/2022 9:54 am : link
Like a real one with bad blood. Grier is still there so we should consider the source of these stories but teams need to do their due diligence with him.
this doesn't seem realistic
UConn4523 : 1/15/2022 10:03 am : link
they finished the season 8-1, I don't see how its even possible for communication to be severed for that long of duration and not have a team fully implode.

I'm not cynical and I hate conspiracy theories, but this sounds like it to me. Pump up the coordinators and shit on the HC after he left? Who's buying this?

I agree this particular instance doesn’t pass the smell test. It would be almost impossible to go half the season with no communication between HC and coaching staff. That’s ludicrous.

That said, he didn’t leave. He was fired. And he wasn’t fired for on field results so it’s not rocket science to assume there were some serious issues with relationships in the building
Look at that Dolphins roster
Breeze_94 : 1/15/2022 10:07 am : link
It’s one of the leagues worst.

Awful Oline (pff has them at #32), limited QB, not many weapons outside of Waddle and a decent TE in Gesicki. The defense has a few players but not crazy talented. 2 of their better defensive players were rookies.

I’d say their roster compares very closely with the Giants. Flores had a winning record with that roster in the last 2 seasons.

"after he left"
UConn4523 : 1/15/2022 10:10 am : link
was referring to him being fired. Its like firing him wasn't convincing enough, stories are being made now to justify it, likely due to Miami fans being pissed their only good HC in forever is going to quickly get a new job and they are stuck holding the bag.

What are the odds Miami regresses next year to under .500 again? I'd say pretty damn high.
He finished the season strong...
EricJ : 1/15/2022 10:11 am : link
why did they fire him? Power struggle? Whose side of the story was that and who do we believe?

A coach that finished 8-1 and who beat the Pats 3 out of the last 4 times was fired... why?

I have no idea what their record next year has to do with the discussion. You went off path with that one. It’s completely irrelevant to the discussion. And who the hell knows, we don’t even know who the coach will be, lol. May want to wait to see that before assuming they will certainly regress. Unless you somehow think Flores is the best coach on the planet and nobody else can possibly fill his shoes.

It seems you would be perfectly fine keeping him whether all these rumors are true or not. And that’s disingenuous at best. Sometimes relationships become impossible to navigate around and it’s time to move on. It sucks for Flores and it’s ridiculous the GM wasn’t shown the door as well, but this could also be a case of Flores digging his own grave

Is it though? Perhaps it was Flores angling for Watson not Ross? Tua had 5 games where he averaged less than 6.0 Y/A. The Giants were worst in NFL at 5.8, 31st place averaged 6.0. Tua had one game (vs. us) between 5.8 and 6.0 Y/A. That means in just about 1/3 of his appearances he was averaging numbers that over a season would make them worst in NFL. His 5th best number was 7.42. That only puts them in 10-12 range. Technically one of his best and one of his worst games he only played a portion of the game but I included both. By comparison, Watson was over 8.0 Y/A in 3 of his 4 years (7.8 the other) including a whopping 8.9 Y/A in 2020 without Hopkins. Maybe Flores was right that Tua is holding them back.

What are you talking about? They were separate comments and neither were directed at you.

I'll be more clear in case I wasn't. Topic #1 - This seems like a bullshit story to give the fans a reason why he was fired since he was a good coach. Topic #2 (which is completely relevant) is I bet they finish under .500 next year, further pissing off fans considering the 2 years they just had.
and nowhere did I say you keep him at all costs
UConn4523 : 1/15/2022 10:36 am : link
there was clearly a power issue and the GM won. Something definitely happened, just not the way this story is selling it.
So, it's not just Giants Central
JohnF : 1/15/2022 10:38 am : link
that leaks out disparaging information on players/coaches when they're released. Who knew?? /sarcasm

As far as Flores and the Giants, that will depend on the new GM. If the new GM wants Flores, and thinks he can work with him (and visa versa), then Flores is in play.

If not, then it won't happen. I have no doubt GM's talk to each other, and if Flores really did clash with his GM, then it may take something like an owner over-riding the GM on the selection. That's unlikely to happen here; JM would be roasted if he forced Flores on the new GM.

Most Players can’t take hard coaching anymore. Just the way they’ve been lifted up by everyone since high school, making their college choice a national TV event…..the draft….it’s rare that players can take tough criticism. Coughlin was one of a kind in that respect. Tomlin is probably the only coach in football right now that can put his players on blast because he’s earned that right.

as well. Experienced HC that showed success in Atlanta, good D mind and got his team to the ultimate game, albeit lost, but they could have won that game too. Anyway I do believe he would need a solid OC like Shanahan though. He’d be a good choice, perhaps even better then Flores.

He definitely was the victim of a power struggle, but I also wouldn't read too much into Miami's winning streak as evidence of an extraordinary coaching job. His team got to play this murderer's row of QBs during their streak:

Tyrod Taylor
Mike Glennon
Joe Flacco
Cam Newton
PJ Walker
Ian Book

It's reminiscent of when the Giants finished 7-9 in 2013 thanks to beating up on teams with backup QBs. The Dolphins' best win in the streak came against an injury-riddled Ravens team entering a late-season slump. When they finally went up against a playoff-level team in week 17, they got shellacked.

I'd also point to the revolving door on his staff (four offensive coordinators, two defensive coordinators, four offensive line coaches), some puzzling decisions (co-offensive coordinators, really?) dysfunctional relations with his QB, and that 1-7 start (haven't we had enough of those ourselves?) as red flags. Now, has he learned a bit of humility during this whole thing, enough to put on a better performance in his next gig? Possible. He'd definitely be an upgrade over what we've had, but I'll be curious to see what other candidates are available first.

If there are character issues with Flores then the Giants are in the best position to extract that information out.

Graham has worked with him for a number of years between New England and Miami and would provide great insight about him. And then the Giants also have Belichick on speed dial who would likely be a good resource as well.

If the Giants hire him for HC, I would assume that whatever went down in Miami would have been properly vetted prior to the decision.

said a lot of people soured on him for how he interfaced with Tua. This is zero inside information, but was the general feeling according to local rags. His opinion was that there were very conflicting feelings about Flores.
I find this very hard to believe.
Section331 : 1/15/2022 12:46 pm : link
I could see if he had stopped communicating with the GM and owner, but his own asst’s. If true, he should never get an NFL job again, but this reeks of character assassination. Dolphins looking for excuses for firing a guy who turned the franchise around.
