Ravens director of player personnel Joe Hortiz is up in the Giants GM search on Saturday. Hortiz has been in Baltimore for more than 20 years. Have heard the Giants have sort of an infatuation with the Ravens organization and the way they’ve consistently stocked their roster. |
They have what I would call operational integrity. Few weak spots.
They've struggled to sometimes identify good WR talent, but the way they've consistently retooled defenses on the fly and have depth despite massive injury issues a couple years in the last decade and stock running back talent tells me they have insight into how to stay lean and mean in the NFL in salary cap league.
Hire Hortiz. Hortiz hires Roman. We draft Willis. And Roman slowly molds Willis into his QB dual-threat O.
Let’s go!

I like Martindale, but my concern is the offense. Whose his OC, and what if the OC leaves?

Lol yea because every qb who can run is Lamar Jackson.

Roman built the 49ers offense for Harbaugh when Kaepernick was there.
Willis is a great athlete who can run. So he fits the profile.

Bring in Fangio as DC and call it a day
Ravens run a model where they draft phenomenally well, rarely sign big ticket FA and draft scheme based more often than not.
That second paragraph is what gets to me. Do I want that? I like Shoen a bit more and he values versatility and guys who can go scheme to scheme.

Ooooh, I like that!!
Peters is very intriguing to me as well. I am very fond of that entire 49er organization. They were daring to let Shanahan pick his GM - Lynch - and let both co-opt all football functions.
Just look, too, at their "Football Operations" side. They have a VP of Football Administration, Head Football R&D, Head Salary Cap, Head Football Systems, Head Football Administration, Software Development Team, Football R&D Analysts.
Do you think we have that level of Ops/Analytics?
Welcome back!

I like Peters as well but I would be happy with Horitz, Peters, or Schoen. I like Poles also but not as much as those three.
I really like the way that the Ravens and Bills are built.

Then bring in Martindale as HC next week.
Let’s go!

Hire a competent offensive staff beyond the OC. Usually QB coaches get elevated to OC’s if/when successful OC’s get poached. And honestly, I don’t think we will need to worry about that for some time because until we get the right pieces in place beyond LT (Thomas), this O is a work in progress.
The same Jackson who just injured his ankle, missing 4 critically important games to cap off an 8-9 season?
The same Jackson-lead offense that has predictably done nothing in the Playoffs when they get there?
I like the idea of Hortiz but I'm in no hurry for a cheap imitation of Lamar Jackson. Who himself hasn't accomplished anything meaningful.

The Ravens consistently find quality players on day 3 of the draft and among the UDFA's. They have an eye for LB's and TE's which should excite us about the possibility of adding Horitz.
Here are some of the Ravens finds from rounds 4-7.
OLB Pernell McPhee,
QB Tyrod Taylor
C Ryan Jensen
OT Rick Wagner
FB Kyle Juszczyk
TE Darren Waller
TE Nick Boyle
ER Za'Darius Smith
ER Matt Judon
G Alex Lewis
G Bradley Bozeman

He has accomplished a whole lot more than any QBs we trot out there. Yeah, league MVP, but he’s accomplished nothing meaningful. Cool, guy.

I would sign up for Hortiz - Roman.
Hortiz is one of the few I like. That organization has been good a LONG time. Learned from Ozzie. And Baltimore builds their teams in a Giant-like manner — similar brands.
Schoen in Buffalo… I question their sustained success, and how much is it because of Josh Allen’s skill set.
Only two in history have ever won it with unanimous selection
Brady in 2010, Jackson in 2019.
Winning league MVP can help punch a ticket to canton. Other than that, nothing meaningful.

Yeah, I don’t get why LJax gets no credit as a superstar QB around here. And, a lot of the same people who crap on Jackson are Daniel Jones defenders. Really weird

I agree with this totally. People seem to be overly obsessed with Schoen because of a parcels link. The Bills nailed Allen but have not been as good as long as the Ravens and more importantly don’t have the modern organizational structure that the Ravens or 49ers do or other teams like the Browns or Colts. Many technical positions, positions go valuation experts etc. IMO the Bills have some very sharp people with excellent eyes for talent but that process is particularly scary because just being smart doesn’t transfer over as well and could be drowned out by many voices with far less eye for talent on the Giants. The Giants don’t need someone with just an eye for talent. They need someone that knows how to advocate for and build out a modern organizational structure with top of the line systems and processes. And in my mind that’s Hortiz or Peters if you don’t get him.

Is this satire?
And now we're seeing a lot of very pro-Ravens and pro-Hortiz things starting to hit Twitter.
I think Hortiz may have overtaken Schoen as the leader in the clubhouse.
As much as we’ve talked about the “Patriots” model, perhaps the Ravens one is really what we’ve should have been striving for.
Is Kyler Murray a “cheap knockoff” because he’s not quite as athletic as Jackson?
What about Dak? Would it be horrible to have someone like him as our QB?
This isn’t a league of be Lamar Jackson or you’ll bust, in fact most QBs coming out nowadays are light years better athletes then the eras of the Manning and Brady.
Guys like Rosen and Goff seem to be busts more often then the althetic QBs.
Yes, the word was that Wink had an impressive interview.
I'd still prefer Roman over Martindale, but I'd take either. And it sounds like Baltimore might even be considering firing Roman as OC, so maybe we could take both - Wink as HC and Roman as OC.

I would draft Willis to make him a better version of himself - like Roman did with Kaepernick, LJax and even Tyrod Taylor.
Willis is a prospect with a great arm, great escapabilty, and great running ability. All those attributes appeal to me inside of Roman's offense.
A lot of guys have come through Baltimore during Hortiz's time there. Leslie Frazier and Jim Caldwell were both on staff in Baltimore at one point in time. Who is to say he wouldn't want one of them? Or what about his current head coach's brother?
roman has been a solid but not elite coordinator for more than a decade. maybe he's bruce arians and just needs his shot but more likely there's a reason he hasn't gotten a shot yet. he has never been a head coach at any level.
wink has also never been a head coach at any level.
id have very little interest in either of those guys personally.
Doesn't compute...

It'll all falls on the GM's view them if they can take the next step from coordinator to HC.

Again folks with the Willis he should be a second round pick at most. He was not Jackson as he is inaccurate and locks into a player way to much. Corral is the most ready and actually can read defenses and move in the pocket.
Pickett and Corral are not worth a top ten pick. Middle of round one at best
