Jordan Raanan: Giants infatuated with Ravens Organization

Ravens director of player personnel Joe Hortiz is up in the Giants GM search on Saturday. Hortiz has been in Baltimore for more than 20 years. Have heard the Giants have sort of an infatuation with the Ravens organization and the way they’ve consistently stocked their roster.

My only concern amount Hortiz
Dave on the UWS : 1/15/2022 2:08 pm : link
(Skinner has the same concern). Is he’s ONLY been with the Ravens for 24 years. Does he have the contacts around the league to build an organization with? Does he have balanced perspective outside what he’s learned in Balt. ? And since the Ravens are scheme specific, will he follow the same tact here?
All that being said, I like his resume better than all but Peters.
George Young and Ernie Accorsi got their starts in Baltimore

I'd be good with going back to that well again.

Jackson can’t throw in cold weather. Not necessarily a knock against the guy cause he’s a phenomenal athlete, but I don’t see him as a long term solution at QB if you want a lot of playoff wins. They literally design games around him not throwing the ball.

I have a feeling Giants will like Schoen the best, but will like Poles more than Hortiz, based on a number of factors
As they should be

Hmmm... what's the difference between Lamar and Danny Dimes???

Terps had a great idea this week.

Hire Hortiz. Hortiz hires Roman. We draft Willis. And Roman slowly molds Willis into his QB dual-threat O.

As long as we get Willis as 32, like the Ravens got Lamar.

Add Ekwonu and Linderbaum with the 5 and 7. We might have a playoff caliber offense next year.

You may want to check this article out. As it reports prior to this season that Jackson and Rodgers are the top QBs in cold weather.

In case you wanted to have a serious conversation...

That article doesn’t actually tell a lot of the story though. It shows you the Ravens record and how many TDs he has averaged.

Regular season? Great. What that article doesn’t show you is that he’s averaged 163 yards a game passing in December. He can’t throw the ball in cold weather because all they do is run. Which is fine because it works. But eventually you have to throw it. Especially in the playoffs. This is shown by his 68 QB rating and 1-3 record.

You're kidding right? You think NFL executives hole up in a bunker all year and avoid everything? Senior Bowls, Pro Days, Combine, NFL people talk cross organizationally all the time and if you think he's not acutely aware of what's going on in the league then..I don't know what to tell you.

The Ravens are a great organization

It's hard being a Giants fan in Ravens territory. They rarely have a bad season. Bisciotti is a great owner who stays out of the way and lets his football people do their thing. Hard not to like John Harbaugh either.

If you are going to emulate a franchise...Baltimore is the one.
This is how low the Maras have gotten

The family is married to the Steelers - the model of NFL stability - and they still have to look to other organizations.

I am as well. For years I have admired the way the Ravens are run and wanted the Giants to poach members of their FO. I like Schoen and Peters a lot but Horitz is my favorite choice to replace Gettleman.

Peters is very intriguing to me as well. I am very fond of that entire 49er organization. They were daring to let Shanahan pick his GM - Lynch - and let both co-opt all football functions.

Just look, too, at their "Football Operations" side. They have a VP of Football Administration, Head Football R&D, Head Salary Cap, Head Football Systems, Head Football Administration, Software Development Team, Football R&D Analysts.

Do you think we have that level of Ops/Analytics?

I think Peters is the guy. Hitting on guys like Deebo and Little are what we need on this team. Not Slayton and Engram

I could see Mara asking Peters who his shortlist is for a HC and Peters saying Mike McDaniel. And Mara not being comfortable with that...

Lol yea because every qb who can run is Lamar Jackson.

Limited views, from what I saw Willis thrpws better than Jackson, IMHO.
There are two big tea leaves that I'm reading
Gatorade Dunk : 1/15/2022 5:03 pm : link
and this is in reverse order of chronology:

1) we're seeing a lot more Hortiz chatter today from beats and national NFL writers than we've seen about other candidates this week

2) Hortiz was only announced as a candidate after Judge was let go - I keep wondering whether he was one of the prime candidates that considered JJ a no-go

Add to that the fact that the Ravens are a strong organization but are not in the playoffs this year, and the stars might be aligning to poach them now.

A lot of time these package deals are overblown. Sure GM candidates probably have guys they like around the league, but that doesn't mean they are coming in married to hiring one of them or that their favorite option is currently a coordinator with their current team.

A lot of guys have come through Baltimore during Hortiz's time there. Leslie Frazier and Jim Caldwell were both on staff in Baltimore at one point in time. Who is to say he wouldn't want one of them? Or what about his current head coach's brother?
Amazing how Mara comes right out and says we have no interest in package deals, so the totality of BBI then decides to view all prospective candidates as part of a package deal. I love this place!!
Exposure to several organizations
upnyg : 1/15/2022 8:11 pm : link
would be best for the GM. In Business, like sports leadership, one guy in the same organization for 10-20 years will make him predictable and try to emulate where he left. The problem is, new starts at new organizations rarely go the same way you just left. There's always a curveball, ownership, ability to sign free agents, location, etc.

The best candidate would be one that has the ability to flex and not be stuck in one process. Thats been the problem with NE guys. They all say they build around the talent, but from what Ive seen, guys leaving there are systems people.

Im not saying Hortiz is a bad candidate...but I think we'd be better served with a leader that took the best from each organization and developed his own process for the Giants...whoever that is.

Just my 2cents.

Why not? Because he looks like he listens to Foster the People and plays Fortnite?

Lol, funny...but yes. Think Mara is comfortable with your typical football guy** and leader**. If Mara likes Peters and Peters likes McDaniel, Mara should let it fly. For my money, they are my first choice....but I also believe Mara wont allow it.
