Bears Making a Full Court Press for Joe Schoen?

mittenedman : 1/15/2022 12:20 pm
Giants better move if they want this guy. The Bears have ex-Bills GM Bill Polian leading their GM search, and already have both Bills coordinators scheduled to interview for their Head Coaching job. Apparently McCaskey's ready to make some sort of package deal. They are hearing Schoen crushed the NY interview - expect them to make a power move.
This is a risk
joeinpa : 1/15/2022 12:22 pm : link
You run when you have an extensive search. If they lose him because they are not ready to commit before concluding their interviews, so be it
I wonder if Horitz is the guy to beat

Wouldn’t dismiss Poles either.

I would rather the NYG take their time & make right call instead of hastily reacting to another team. That is how we ended up with McAdoo as HC.

Fine by me. Chiefs and Ravens drafts have been better as of late

Wonder if he grew up a Bears fan.

I agree! Go through the process and don't rush it.
Giants need to make sure
UGADawgs7 : 1/15/2022 12:30 pm : link
They make the correct hire, and do their due diligence. I guarantee since this was a zoom interview, if they really want Schoen, they already set up an in person and told him if that interview goes well, it ends with a contract. Idk if the Bears will interview him once and give him a contract right away. If they do, I wouldn’t be surprised if Schoen lets the Giants know prior to signing to ask them where they are leaning ( if he would rather the Giants job.)

Problem is - what if Schoen's the right guy?

I'm not even saying he is - he actually "looks" Chicago to me.
Now that the Giants interviewed Horitz
Jay on the Island : 1/15/2022 12:37 pm : link
Peters is the only remaining candidate who has a real shot of winning the job. Rumors were that Horitz and Schoen were the favorites going in and now that they have both interviewed the Giants would be wise to move fast to make their decision in the next few days.

There is a lot of qualified applicants and you need to go through them all.
If you miss out on one so be it and as a candidate, they should probably interview with everyone before saying yes.

I agree that the follow-up interview is probaby in motion if he really crushed it. It is really good that they have multiple really good choices.

So what then if you go through everyone with all due diligence and Schoen is the best candidate? But lo and behold, Chicago has identified he’s their man and hires him tomorrow.

Point being patience could run the risk of losing out on the best candidate.
Remember the mad rush to hire Matt Rhule?
AdamBrag : 1/15/2022 12:46 pm : link
Hopefully, the Giants don't rush.
Actually good with this
Giants73 : 1/15/2022 12:50 pm : link
Seems like him and Danilo are a package deal. Not sure how great Buffalos offense is without Allen and Diggs.
There most likely is no “best”

GM candidate. There are only qualified and unqualified. Beyond that it’s personality, similar philosophy and thought process, etc. I would bet any of the top 3 would do a very good job.
I really like Schoen

after checking out Justin Penick's breakdown. At the same time, don't rush it.

I am sure that they have told the candidates that they like, “don’t take a job without talking with us again.” And if I am a candidate, I am taking what I see as the best opportunity, not the first one. You want the right opportunity to succeed.
Not doubting you

Bears are following the Giants approach - video interviews first
GFAN52 : 1/15/2022 1:06 pm : link
followed by in person interviews.

Quote:
The expectation is that the Bears cast a wide net of candidates for a first round of video interviews. For those candidates who stand out, they’ll be invited back for an in-person interview.

Giants have to get this right, and who knows, maybe the SF's Adam Peters crushes it as well on Monday.

Exactly, there’s plenty of extremely well qualified candidates that if we lose one, there’s always another, unless someone really stands out above the rest.

Hortiz
kelly : 1/15/2022 1:43 pm : link
Very Strong candidate. Ravens have been consistently good far longer than most teams. Great at drafting.

Wink would bring back Giant football. Run the ball, play action pass, stop the run, pressure the passer.

Bring back tough, smash mouth NY Giant
football.

We haven't seen it in 10 years. No bend but don't break defense. No West coast offense.

That is what Giant fans want to see.

what is this "package deal" you have in your remarks referring to?

He's my top choice as well given his background and the fact that he's been with a successful organization for a decade. I'm intrigued by Martindale as well and I 'm sure the Giants know him as they interviewed him prior to going with Judge.

How would you “know”
Dave on the UWS : 1/15/2022 2:13 pm : link
that Schoen is the best candidate until you interview everyone? They have repeatedly let other teams dictate to them in the past, rushed things - and made bad choices. There is more than one excellent choice here. Keep to the process.

You're right, you've convinced me, we sahould have hired him before we interviewed horitz or anyone else. I don't know why everyone doesn't understand this and just hire the first person they like. no need for extensive thorough searches. all hirings should be fear based and determined by who might get hired out from under us while we are be unnecessarilly thorough.

If Shoen knows hes got the Bears locked and that theres any chance at all hes the Giants top choice, he sits tight and leverages for the best number from whichever organization he prefers. Giants have no reason to go hair on fire.
If I'm a first time GM

I'd rather go to a place with 2 first round picks instead of 0
This seems like a strong GM "class"
The Dude : 1/15/2022 2:54 pm : link
if thats even a thing. Maybe its their agents drumming up all this interest and buzz but it feels like theres alot of quality candidates.

Can't pretend to have conviction about a GM, but based on what i read, my preference:

Peters/Mike McDaniel HC
Hortiz/ Whoever he wants as HC (hopefully not Wink, but at the same time, you hire Hortiz you should defer to him)
Schoen/Daboll
….
ryanmkeane : 1/15/2022 3:11 pm : link
To me Schoen feels like the overall best candidate in terms of the entire operation

But Hortiz and Poles would be better at picking players

The Bears are going to hire GM and HC
kdog77 : 1/15/2022 3:29 pm : link
separately with both reporting to the Ownership. That seems like a worse situation for a prospective GM than what Giants are offering (GM can hire their own HC).

I would think that smart guy like Schoen would have known that both teams were interested in him for a while and will weigh his options with full information on the table rather than rush to take the first job offered. Very few NFL execs get 2nd shot at GM position, so the pros/cons of both jobs need to be evaluated in context.

From all reports, the Giants have great options at GM and should not rush to make a decision.
