Brian Flores has interviewed for the Texans HC job and if he were to become their next HC it is expected to impact Deshaun Watson's desire to stay.
For over a year it was rumored that Brian Flores wanted Miami to acquire Deshaun Watson and Watson having a strong desire to play for Flores.
Now if Watson changes his mind and wants to stay and the legal issues with him are resolved what happens to rookie QB Davis Mills?
For those who don't know who Mills is he was their 3rd round pick from the 2021 draft.
Mills had a very solid rookie season despite the Texans having arguably the worst receiving talent in the NFL. In 13 games Mills had a completion % of 66.8 with 2664 yards 16 TD's and 10 int's.
Here is Sy's writeup for Mills. 6. Davis Mills / Stanford / 6’4-217
Grade: 78
Summary: Fourth year junior entry from Duluth, Georgia. Two-year starter that first earned a starting role after KJ Costello got injured in 2019. Honorable Mention All-Pac 12 honors in 2020. Mills was a former top-shelf recruit, but his career never quite took off. Much of his status and grade still depend on projection rather than on field performance. While he does check a lot of boxes when it comes to arm talent and mechanics, he simply didn’t show enough in his 11 starts, a woefully low number. He will be a backup for at least a year or two, however there is an intriguing skill set here.
*I’ll tell you what. If I am a QB-needy team and miss out on the top 4 guys on this list, I would rather wait until day 2 for Mills than use a day 1 pick on Lance. I know Lance has more upside, but I see a pro in Mills. He is really clean. The issue with him, like Lance, is a lack of experience. The Covid situation really hurt him, and I was surprised he left Stanford, because had he gone back to school, he could have been QB1 in next year’s crop. Someone like WAS or CHI can get really solid value here.
If the Giants aren't in love with any of the QB's in the draft then Mills might be a solid option. Now Mills might not even be available if Watson returns to Houston but if he is I would consider trading a day 2 pick for him if the new GM believes that he can be the answer at QB for the Giants.
Wouldn't they just keep him?
Wouldn't they just keep him?
If Watson returns then he is their long term answer at the position and they could be enticed by a day 2 pick to address another need. It's just a hypothetical option that I considered because I am bored.
If the Giants went the FA route for a QB I hope that they sign either Mariota or Trubisky. Trubisky makes a lot of sense especially if the Giants hire Daboll as HC.

are out on QBs in the draft I’m hoping they explore options like Jimmy G., Andy Dalton, Gardner Minshew, Jameis Winston, Jacoby Brissett, Tyler Huntley, Tyrod Taylor, and maybe Teddy B. as a bridge QB to someone from the 2023 draft.

Based on their costs last year the Giants could sign both for less than what they are slated to pay Jones.

I doubt Trubisky signs for so little money again. I was surprised by his contract but it reportedly had to do with his desire to play for a contender.

If the Giants cut Jones, do they take a cap hit on his whole salary? If so, the cost of Mariota of Trubisky would be in addition to Jones' salary, not instead of it.
and if Mills is a viable trade target because he can actually play, a late round pick doesn't get it done IMO

He signed for backup money. Where's he gonna get more.
And unless you give HOU something decent, they're not trading him
Agreed. And Houston likes what they see in Mills.
They want to get Watson out of town and get as much compensation as possible. They want him to settle with his accusers and end his legal issues. Otherwise, that is a lot of money to swallow because there is actually a chance that Watson never plays in the NFL again. Which I never thought was possible, but I can't rule it out now.
Which QB's numbers a worse than Jones? Mills? Didn't he throw for 17 TDs, as a rookie?
This is true. But without the clean bill of health, that's a tough sell. I would take anything at this point just to clear that money.
However, if I can't find a trade partner, I still want to start over and prepare for the next QB (whether short or long term). So, I would take the cap hit.
