Two more (and likely final) interviews for the Giants GM job today: 49ers assistant GM Adam Peters and Director of player personnel Ran Carthon.
After that, expect the Giants to bring in multiple finalists for in-person interviews.
you want to emulate ... the Bills, Ravens, Niners or Cardinals. I’d go with the Ravens. They have been a model of competitive consistency for a lot of years with strong defense and talent based offense. The others still have a lot to prove.
Schoen will be a good solid hire if that is the choice...he seems like he would have the least amount of learning curve since his hands are nearly in everything.
He doesn't have the draft record some of the other guys have but in terms of coming in and building a foundation for the front office Schoen seems like the most ready to do that.
I think some thoughts on a few of the coach/GM situations are in order:
• NEW YORK GIANTS. They started at Ground Zero late in the week after Dave Gettleman quit as GM and Joe Judge got fired as head coach. “I don’t want to rush into anything,” president and co-owner John Mara said. “We made that mistake in the past.” The last three hires—Ben McAdoo, Pat Shurmur, Judge—show that Mara needs to step aside and let a new voice, a new GM, do this one, because the Giants are in the gutter after seasons of 13, 11, 12, 10 and 13 losses, and now being stuck in salary-cap hell with a bad roster.
Gettleman actually did more harm to the franchise than Judge. He left them as one of five teams in negative cap shape for the 2022 season. Seven players—none of whom is a quarterback—are scheduled to account for 59.8 percent of the team’s cap in 2022, a total of $124.6 million. James Bradberry and Adoree' Jackson are good corners—they’d better be really good for a combined $37.4 million next year. Is Leonard Williams worth 13.1 percent of the cap, at $27.3 million? Is Kenny Golladay (zero TDs this year) worth 10.2 percent of the cap, at $21.2 million? If I’m a GM candidate, I’m telling Mara: Let’s use 2022 as a fix-it year instead of scotch-taping the cap so the pain continues into 2023.
Guess I'm not the only one who thinks Wilson was going to be an impressive interview. I've had him as a wildcard as well.
I like Wilson as well, but he is the youngest and least experience. I would love to pull him in under Hortiz or Schoen to continue his ascent in rebuilding another team.

It is really unimaginable that we had people even at the start of this year still saying they thought Gettleman was doing a good job. I would almost not be surprised to see him running out of the building wearing an Eagles jersey and laughing.
a good job. Moreso they pointed to some of his drafting and free agency signings as improved, and that he was working well with Judge so let's see how it works out.

My bad. I posted this on the wrong thread. Should have been on the Peter King thread.

Sorry, as I posted that snippet here first, but then realized probably better in the other one.
Gotta get the GM & Coach sometime next week I'd think.
Senior Bowl and Shrine Bowl practices upcoming the week after that - gotta have a team in place by then to scout the players.
I think Peters comes with the most interesting HC hiring if he brings Mike McDaniel. But I don't see him leaving the west coast.
McDaniel doesn’t call plays. Would you be comfortable with a one year OC who has never called plays to be HC?
that an interesting question...it would be riskier for sure but considering the praise he gets I would have to consider. If he is a big part of there game planning the 49ers constantly are playing with new personnel but always get creative to win and they do it with sub par QB play.
Don't get me wrong Schoen/Daboll I would be very happy with along with Hortiz and whoever he brings too. You could even sell me on Poles.
I don’t think Peters would take the job honestly. From everything I’ve read, he’s a West Coast guy.
Why would you interview for a high profile job you have NO intention of taking?
Not to mention, nobody actually enjoys living in San Francisco anymore. I know a ton of people born and raised in the bay area who have migrated elsewhere over the past couple of years.
Maybe 2-3 guys make it to Rd 2 if Mara and Tisch have a different set of favorites.
Or maybe they are in full agreement after Rd 1 and an offer goes out tomorrow?
Forgot that Rd 1 interviews weren't in-person. They probably do a Rd 2 then for certain.
Sounds like Round 1 don't count towards Rooney Rule either. So they cannot hire Schoen, Horitz, Peters, or the Titans guys without having an in person interview with a minority candidate first.
Candidates who did not interview with a colleague. Not saying the other candidates aren’t serious options, but I think they were interviewed more for information gathering on how a collaborative organization should be run.
Giants have very little money committed beyond next year, with a massive increase. The only reason to cut a player is if they are not a fit for the new coach.
Jettisoning salary for the sake of it is stupid. Who are you saving it for...Barkley and Jones have not earned a second contract to date.
This division sucks. With good coaching and a good draft, there is no reason the Giants can't compete for the East
I think that it pretty academic for any new GM for this situation. The coach might have a different point of view because an L is an L against their resume, so you have to massage that as an organization.

King isn't representing that the fix is just cutting all those players. Probably mean that they should be shopping some this offseason or by the Oct trade deadline if not competitive again (likely won't be). And probably some cuts that create some dead money which nobody likes but that is what kind of shape our moronic GM left this place in. Restructuring Sterling Shepard's deal...good lord.
I think the final 3 will be Schoen, Peters and Poles. I think Hortiz is a fascinating candidate, but don't think he breaks the top 3. My gut feeling is its between Schoen and Peters. I think Schoen will take it in the end with a phone call from Parcells to get over the top.
Agree. I actually don’t think there is a choice given the contracts handed out over the last two years.
I'd love to know if any of the candidates were really candid about this essentially saying "Look, you've gotta get a little blood on your hands next year" and if so what the reaction from ownership was.
Agree. I actually don’t think there is a choice given the contracts handed out over the last two years.
Same broken record. Lets tank the season! Tank Tank Tank, I want draft picks.....Waaaa we lost again, get my pitchfork, blow it all up, I want a new coach every two years! waa waa waa.
1. Has not created or contributed anything of value relating to the game and
2. Has absolutely no accountability for anything he suggests should he be wrong.

4 years of "trying to win" with the wrong leadership in charge has royally effed them.

Not unusual. At least in my neck of the woods.
Also I have wondered if they were thinking about a 1, 2 punch things..
IE bring in Peters AND Carthon, but I dont know if thats possible.
My pick is Horitz with Schoen a close 2nd.
Peters goes now, yes.
