Aren't they required to do so in order to fulfill the Rooney Rule either way? And if they only cover themselves with a required in-person interview, they're guaranteed to get flagged, unless the candidate they end up hiring is one of the minority candidates.
Actually, it's the opposite. Because of the prevalence of virtual interviews now, you can interview whoever you'd like in the first round, but the Rooney Rule has been expanded to include the follow-up round of in-person finalists.
You must include an in-person interview for a minority candidate, based on that. What is unclear is whether you are required to have in-person interviews at all. So if NYG have made up their mind already and every candidate has had the same interview experience thus far, it's odd (IMO) to suggest that an in-person round needs to occur, as long as the team is consistent with other virtual interview hires.
During the first rd of COVID. Look it up. At some point it will be changed back but not yet. Their first rd of interviews and as sufficient. They “could” hire off the first rd , but have announced they want to have a 2nd td in person. Poles may be one of the finalists.

They changed rule Oct 21 to require in person rooney rule interview. Is this not the most recent change? Link - ( New Window )

Poles is probably a finalist, making it a moot point, but they literally just changed this three months ago if you look at the date of my link.
"The rule has been expanded to require teams to interview at least two external minority candidates for general manager/executive of football operations positions and all coordinator roles. Beforehand, the requirement was to interview one minority candidate from outside a team for openings in those positions. NFL clubs now must conduct an in-person interview for at least one external minority candidate for any head coach or general manager opening."
Coordinator and assistant GM interviews can be virtual, GM and HC interviews must be in person to count as of October 28th,2021
some combination of Shoen, Poles, Peters, and Hortiz but it will be interesting to see if there is a dark horse candidate like Carthon, Quentin Harris, or Adrian Wilson gets a second look.
we will never know what is going on behind the scenes in terms of back channeling. I certainly understand how everyone is having on every morsel of information. Just hope we do our due diligence and get the right guy. Of course whoever the Giants favor would have to want to come here.
the rules in Oct. in the current pandemic climate, that’s insane.
I'm curious to know whether there's an if/if attached to the rule. Sportswriters aren't especially nuanced, as a rule.
It could well be that IF you have a second round of interviews, and IF those interviews occur in-person, then you are required to include a minority candidate (presumably from your original pool, otherwise it's a mockery).
I don't see how the league could force any team to conduct in-person interviews against their will at the moment, nor how they could force teams to conduct multiple rounds of interviews if they choose not to do so. If every candidate has had the same interview opportunity, it would seem that the conditions of the rule should have been met.
Of course, there's the complicating factor that so many beats and podcast folks couldn't wait to share that they'd heard that Schoen and the Giants have been in talks for months, so there might well be a Rooney reminder coming for the Giants no matter the outcome of the GM search.
With the prevalence of the current strain of the virus you are not doing someone a favor by requiring a plane trip, hotels, restaurants and in person meetings.
I have many friends and associates who are triple vaccinated and have the virus.
I think accommodations to that rule should not be hard to obtain.
The outcome of in person and on line interviews will not be different.

Know everyone wants up-to-the-minute updates on the GM search and I'll try to provide them. But these are tight circles. For instance, Giants essentially hired Judge on a Monday night two years ago. No one knew until almost noon the next day after Rhule-Carolina was finalized.

I don't disagree. I'm just assuming that the league won't allow any discrepancy of the interviews, which is why I wonder if there's an if/if reasonableness to the rules.
Which is to say, if having in-person interviews is unreasonable, and it might be currently, then it's unreasonable for all candidates. If it's unreasonable for candidates who have to travel by air, then it's unreasonable for all candidates who have to travel by air, etc.
I just don't think they can fly Peters in for an in-person interview and then ask Poles for a second interview via Zoom, for example.
I do think they should be able to declare the process over and the decision made. But if there's a second round, and it includes any in-person interviews, it's going to need to include one of the minority candidates.
He's been working for Brandon Beane, the current GM in Buffalo, who was the Assistant GM to Gettleman in Carolina.
Once Beane was hired by the Bills to be their GM in 2017, he hired Schoen, who previously worked for the Dolphins. At one point in Miami, Schoen worked under Parcells.
After Gettleman was fired from Carolina in 2017, I believe he was hired by Beane to do some consulting work. Which means he would have been around Schoen.
Despite our horrible record under Gettleman, there were a few occasions where Mara said he liked the evaluation system/process Gettleman had installed, and he didn't want to uproot it.
Let's say that's still true. It's very possible Beane and Schoen used that same system, or parts of it, in Buffalo. So there would be very little disruption to that process in place if Schoen is the hire.
This bothers me, of course, because I want a hire with ZERO connections to anything Giants. And that's not the case with Schoen.
If that’s your idea of being connected to the Giants you could probably find a way to connect every single person in the league to the Giants. At some point they probably all crossed paths or worked with someone that worked with someone else that may have at some point worked for the Giants.
You’re trying too hard. This guy worked with this guy who worked with this guy who worked for the Giants. Alrighty then!
Might be a leap to suggest the systems and processes used
by Buffalo are the same as what Gettleman put in place in NY. And moreso to believe that Gettleman likely ever used them as effectively as they could be, or in the same manner as Beane and Schoen have over these past few years where they haven't worked together.
Most importantly, human judgment and decision-making still plays a major part in player evaluation and it is simply obvious that Getts was awful in this capacity.
The giants have their 3-4 finalists. Probably have them booked for flights, My guess interviews will be wrapped up tomorrow or thursday, with GM being selected thursday night, friday morning
Actually, it's Ran Carthon. My error. I think an ex football player is the best judge of players who have the talent to play in the NFL and the mental makeup to succeed.

Is it confirmed that they are doing a 2nd round of in person interviews?
Quote:
we hear about 2nd round in person interviews later tonight or tomorrow. Hopefully have this wrapped up by Saturday/Sunday. HC search starts next week.

Is that true even if they hire a minority candidate?
Zoom does NOT count.

All good names.
Not saying this is incorrect, but they have to have two minority in person interviews, so this isn’t the full list, if legit

Only one has to be in person, they (virtually) interviewed 4 minority candidates so they have satisfied the first part of the rule.
I'd wait til a reputable source before I was sold on that. No offense.

Why Carthon?
As long as they are given the resources and the control to make changes they see fit in the football ops.
