During the initial lockdown, in the spring of 2020 i just happened to grab a chocolate chip cookie after pouring a nice bourbon, i think it was Colonel E Taylor small batch.
Anyway, i'm not a big sweets guy, but if you have the opportunity, and you like bourbon, have one with a chocolate chip cookie.
Have you tried the Jeffersons Ocean? The gimmick is it's aged at sea. Kinda pricy, but I love it.
I saw a YouTube review about the Jeffersons...He did mention that it is aged at sea and that it's pricy......He actually hated it -Different strokes, I guess
its not around anymore but if you can find Colonel EH Taylor small batch bourbon, also a great one.
A buddy of mine in CA loves this. It's MSRP is $70 but because of demand every store around here sells if for at least double that (if they even have it).
the problem is the price, its been jacked up the last few years, used to get it for $45 and its now $55. At that price (yeah its just $10 but it definitely is in another tier now) there's other options that I like better.
My wife got me a brand I never heard of for Christmas and its really tasty. Looking it up its also $55. I'd need to try them side by side since its been a while since I've had the Double Oak. New Riff - ( New Window )

Bourbon is so good with desserts (paired with Pecan Pie is probably my death row last meal dessert). I've also had cookies and other pastries and it just works. The carmel/buttersctoch you get from most bourbons makes it a homerun everytime.

Funny you should mention the Jefferson s Ocean “gimmick “
We opened a bottle and we’re like wow it’s really good!
70 bucks! Got one for my bday.
2 other fantastic cheap ones I been nipping on:
Larceny and 4 Roses smal batch.
Can’t go wrong .

I've found it for about that price here in CA as well. Excellent Bourbon.
That's my special occasion bottle right now.
My go to bottle is Knob Creek 9-yr 100-proof. I drink it neat with a splash of water while I'm enjoying my favorite cigar. If that won't wind you down after a long day, nothing will.

Start low proof...taste will be a little thinner but it won't burn and you will taste the different flavors.
Some good suggestions in this thread but great beginner's bourbons are Basil Haydens and Angel's Envy. Very tasty bourbons, smooth, and no burn. Buffalo Trace would be a good first bourbon also.
As you start to enjoy trying different bourbons, start to dabble in higher proof, barrel strength batches...more burn but much more flavor.
It depends on what you don't like about it. Depending on the mash bill (i.e. the percentage of different grains used) it will taste different.
All bourbon is at least 51% corn, but if it is mostly corn it will have a vanilla scent and taste, IMO. Buffalo Trace is high corn. So is Elijah Craig (small batch is my favorite value bottle).
If it has a high wheat percentage will be sweeter. Maker's Mark is a high wheat bourbon. Maker's Mark 42 is really good, BTW.
A bourbon with high rye will be dryer and "spicier" (not like a jalapeno). Maybe "sharper" is a better adjective. Bulleit and Basil Hayden are high rye.
Have you guys ever tried a blind taste test of bourbon? You would be surprised how hard it is to correctly pick out the different brands of bourbon. Try it with at least 4 different bourbons...and no cheating! It might change your opinion about how well you can discern the differences between bourbon types. And it's fun!
I used to be the same way up until about 5 years ago. I started off with Makers Mark which is a little bit sweeter, and mixed it with ginger ale. Did a 50/50 mix at first, and then over the course of a couple of months started using less and less ginger ale until I was finally able to just drink it on the rocks by itself.
That's how I am with Scotch. My suggestion (despite good recommendations above i.e. lower proof, different mash bills, specific brand recommendations +1 for Angel's Envy for non-bourbon lovers) is to just drink something else. I have given up on Scotch.
My suggestion - stop trying and drink something else. There's lots of other high quality booze out there. There are aged rums, tequilas, brandys, whatever. Get a really good sipping tequila. Try Manhattans or old fashioned. Drink Scotch, try a good rye. Bourbons are now very trendy and I happen to love them but if you don't like it, stop drinking it lol.
it's good stuff. I keep Woodford around now on a consistent basis.
It rivals my Bombay Gin Martinis...almost
Not a "Gin" drinker, but mostly because I am unfamiliar.
The Woodford is tops in my book, although I love trying others. My wife bought me a bottle of Angels Envy for Christmas, which I like very much, but I like the regular Woodford better, and the Double Oaked Woodford is the best I've ever had....

Yep, good stuff. Attached a decent article on bourbons under $100.
Blanton's is my favorite but pain in the ass to get here in ATL so it caused me to maintain Woodford more often, and it hasn't disappointed..

This seems like a trap.
Me too!

I've tried it too. Aging it at sea does give it a unique taste though.
I'm currently working through a bottle of Bed Time and Noah's Mill.
I agree with cjac and others about Bourbon being a perfect compliment to chocolate chip cookies and other sweets.
Feb 1 can't get here soon enough.
There's also a new Rye oak barrel Old Peppers which is exceptional tho a little pricier
Pretty much only secondary market and sells for $100 plus IF you can find it
The barrel proof goes for more like $300

Rizz said it - 4 Roses small batch. Great starter bourbon mid $40s

The single barrel at $45 is much better. That said the small batch is $32 by me so if price is a factor it’s good for that price range.
Any suggestions?

Buy a big package of Fig Newtons and dunk them in the Bourbon or Scotch as you drink/eat.
You'll thank me later...

I am a big Scotch drinker except for Islay which I thought was nasty. I had to spit it out.

What does aging whiskey at sea do differently than aging whiskey on land?
