GBN Draft Report: 2022 Defensive End Profiles

M.S. : 1/19/2022 6:05 am

By Colin Lindsay*

The following DEs are profiled. On average, each profile is ~300 words:

Aidan Hutchinson, Michigan, 6-6.5, 270, 4.65, JR
Kayvon Thibodeaux, Oregon, 6-4.5, 260, 4.55, JR
George Karlaftis, Purdue, 6-4, 275, 4.75, JR
David Ojabo, Michigan, 6-5, 255, 4.55, JR
Jermaine Johnson, Florida State, 6-5, 265, 4.55; SR

For quite a while, I was pretty sure one of these players would be selected by the Giants in Round One, but now I have my doubts. If the Giants get real lucky, they can snag Jermaine Johnson at #36, but as for the first round I believe they will select Matt Corral at #5 and then take an offensive lineman two picks later.

*The publish date is May 21, 2021 which can't be right given that 2021 season stats are referenced.

I hope your wrong about Matt Corral

All his red zone scores were runs....which won't happen in the NFL.....but

I am all for teams trading up for a QB.

Seems like a deep red chip class....not many blue goose. Trade back.....rebuild OL and re-enforce front 7.

Leave QB for next year...and get a young veteran to compete with Jones

I would like very much for teams to have a bidding war over the Giants first pick at #5. That would be great! But my guess on Giants going QB early and Matt Corral specifically is based on:

(1) A new General Manager & Head Coach have no ties to Daniel Jones and may want a fresh new start at QB. But they may have no problem giving Daniel Jones majority of snaps next season while a newly drafted QB watches/learns from the sideline;

(2) If by some miracle, Daniel Jones lights it up, well, then, that would be a good problem to have;

(3) There are clearly other positions (OL, DL, WR) in Round One that would provide more immediate help than a QB, but how much meaning does the word "immediate" have for a team a bad as the Giants? 2022 is an absolute re-build from the ground up and that may include a brand new QB who doesn't really see that much action;

(4) As for Matt Corral, I just get a sense that he has something "special" about him that differentiates him from a QB like Kenny Pickett.

Not sure I understand

The commentary about Giants selecting a QB in first round. I don’t see it nor is there management in place that may be talking about it. Crazy talk.
It's certainly not crazy talk
Giantophile : 1/19/2022 7:22 am : link
They have 2 high picks, a new FO and no established QB in place. It would be crazy not to discuss it regardless of the generalization that this "class is weak". Both corral and Pickett will be gone by pick 15 latest, probably top 10.

I also happen to think Corral as a prospect is wildly underrated around here. 4 star recruit who played against SEC defenses every week with a modern game.

Forgot to mention he's an absolute gamer. Super competitive, mobile, accurate, athletic. Undersized and has some turnover issues. No perfect prospect but he's certainly in the conversation. I'd be thrilled with him at 5.
My hope...

Either the Panthers or another team trades up into the top 4 to draft Corral and Stingley is chosen top 4 as well. That means either Thibodeaux or Neal would be available for the Giants at 5.

To stretch the dream even further... Pickett or Hamilton go at 6 and the Giants get Ekwonu at 7.

Thibodeaux and Ekwonu or Neal and Ekwonu would be an awesome start to the draft and to the rebuild.
I tend to agree on selecting a QB
LoveFootball : 1/19/2022 7:55 am : link
Either 1st or 2nd round depending on who is there and who is hired as GM/HC.

We live in absolutely amazing times!
#5 is too high to pick a QB this year. #7 too. If no one wants to
Ivan15 : 1/19/2022 9:39 am : link
Trade up for one of the Giants’ picks for a QB, the Giants shouldn’t be picking a QB there either.

OT or Edge for both those picks. Far and away, the biggest needs.
Johnson
Archer : 1/19/2022 9:51 am : link
Johnson is starting to grow on me

I would not be adverse to trading back and selecting him
I do not see much of a difference between Johnson and Ojabu

If they love the QB
giantstock : 1/19/2022 10:28 am : link
Then go for it.
I would love for them to get one of those pass rushers
David B. : 1/19/2022 10:32 am : link
in any of the top 3 picks. If the value lines up, it would be ideal to come out of the 2nd round with either two OLs and one pass rusher, or vice versa.
If the Giants go QB with the 5th pick
STLGiant : 1/19/2022 10:41 am : link
I would think the injury to Jones is very significant and possibly career ending.

Otherwise, I’d build up the OL and DL and maybe acquire a Dalton or an experienced NFL journeyman in FA and wait a year before selecting a new franchise QB…js
Could see Giants having a decision to make

at 7 of Ojabo vs Hamilton or Stingley. The much needed EDGE with more question marks or perceived BPA in the secondary.

Worth noting that if Shoein is the guy, the earliest the Bills have taken a DB in the Beane era was Taron Johnson in the 4th in 2018. But they've taken 6 Front 7 guys in the top 3 rounds across the four drafts.
