Ian O'Connor @Ian_OConnor John Mara reached out to Brian Flores a couple of nights ago, a source told The Post. Very good conversation. Mara assured Flores that he's a serious candidate and that Giants will be willing to eat money to clear up some cap space...This could be Flores-Daboll steel cage match. |
It’s been widely reported that Flores was on all the GM shortlists.
Right, but this is also a good way to keep a potential coach informed and available as I'm sure Flores was up the list for most of the candidates. It'd be worse to have Flores take a job somewhere and then here that Schoen wanted to interview him.
Agree that it should be Schoen's call.
There is more than one point to what you posted. You focused on clearing the cap issues, you are right that is the correct play. Others are focusing on Mara's comment that Flores is in consideration. Is Mara speaking for the new GM as well?
Even if Schoen has Flores as a strong candidate, given the smoke around too much influence from the Maras this should not have gotten out 🤦🏾♂️
Sure they can't. Then take a look at some teams and how many high priced long term vets they are paying compared to other teams.
Yes there's a day of reckoning for teams that kick the can down the road, but there are ways around and through the cap. It's been proven time and time again.
The cap is more for the teams that don't spend enough money in my view.
We'll agree to disagree.
The more a Mara gets involved, the more something will get fucked up. History proves that fact.
I am harboring serious doubts that Mara has learned his lesson.
If John Mara has established anything as fact, it's that he can't evaluate a coaching candidate to save his life.
Worry about the draft. That right there is the boogeyman. You can't hide from bad drafts. You can hide from a bad FA move or two.
I call BS on this report
BBI loves to worry.

Much for the gm picking the coach huh

Yea, well when the owner calls the candidate... that might have influence no?
Exactly. Thank you Eric. We need to stay on him and his familia.

Bradberry, Martinez. I don't think it is about 2022. Its about a HC coming in and implementing a direction with a super young team and opening things up for 2023 and thereafter. I think the HC/GM will want to keep Williams.
BBI loves to worry.
Half loves to worry, and half like to bury their heads in the sand. It's a wonderful dynamic.
2) Flores was getting lots of requests from other teams.
3) Flores apparently had some interest in the Giants Job.
4) The Giants reached out to Flores.
I dont get how this the problem some are making it out to be.

There’s still a limit to what you can do. Bad free agent signings still hurt you.

+1 and you know BBI would meltdown if someone else snatched Flores/Daboll in the meantime.
Agreed. Unless it was "[GM Candidate] is interested in interviewing you if he's hired" I'm concerned about Mara reaching out to head coaches on his own before Schoen was hired.
Eric, who says Schoen didn't tell them to reach out? Schoen wasn't GM yet so would be inappropriate for him to do the reaching out.

2022 isn’t the goal. They are screwed there either way. The goal is to use 2022 for all the dead cap so it’s off the books come 2023

Not a problem at all if some of the assumptions you make above are true. But they are only assumptions. We have no idea who each of the three GM candidates had on their list. There is also no reason to believe waiting until today for Schoen to contact them was going to cost us a shot at them. Have any of them taken a job yet?

Exactly. Plus let's not forget that if you're a black candidate for a number of HC positions, you would want assurances from any potential suitor that you were not just a "Rooney Rule" interview.
Mara reaching out and assuring Flores that he is a viable HC candidate doesn't seem like a big deal to me. In fact, it's the right move to keep one of the best HC options in play.
Coaches are going to be signed soon. If Daboll decides he likes Miami more than the Giants (and that's possible), then the GM needs alternatives. You don't want to lose Flores to Houston, and then be stuck with 2nd or 3rd choices. As long as JM had Schoen's approval to reach out to coaches, I'm fine with it.
I agree, but if the rumors of all the candidates mentioned Flores, and even Quinn, then it’s a wise preemptive move to get them in the building and show interest before someone makes them a solid offer they can’t refuse.
As to ‘carte blanche ’, all candidates should be interviewed, even if the insiders favorite, like Schoen was, wins out; in this case Daboll.
If John Mara has established anything as fact, it's that he can't evaluate a coaching candidate to save his life.
I agree, but the Giants don't have an indefinite amount of time with other teams vying for the same candidates. I have no problem with Mara getting his foot in the door, especially if these guys (Quinn, Flores) were discussed in the interviews

If Flores went elsewhere today it’s because he doesn’t want to be the Giants HC. All he has to do is wait a day or two for the Giants to start lining up interviews. You don’t need to be a genius or a meddling owner to figure that out. If Schoen likes him as a candidate, he would contact him very soon. So the call from Mara seems like it serves little purpose other than to signal to Flores that he’s Mara’s choice.
This is absolutely correct. Full cap reset.
I'm sure HC candidates were discussed in interviews. Mara's just letting Flores know they're interested so he doesn't take the first offer he sees.
I think the days of no involvement from Tisch are over. How about all the money going to coaches that never completed their contracts.
I think Tisch is going to hold the Mara's more accountable. The long honeymoon is over.

Absolutely. Trade who you can, cut the rest.
Forget the bathwater, throw out the whole bathtub.
And have bathfitter install a new shower in just one day, now here's your local traffic...
😂
And then those fools are surprised every year when the Giants suck commensurate to the bad ways they spend money.
