Daboll and Frazier to be interviewed tomorrow

ryanmkeane : 1/21/2022 5:35 pm
The #Giants are expected to interview two of their HC candidates — #Bills OC Brian Daboll and DC Leslie Frazier — this weekend in Buffalo, source said. Their new GM Joe Schoen is still in town, so this all makes sense. Both should happen tomorrow.
I'm confused. The Bills are at KC on Sunday.
81_Great_Dane : 1/21/2022 5:38 pm : link
I assume Schoen has already officially severed his ties with the Bills and is working for the Giants. But why are the interviews in Buffalo?
Outstanding
BigBlueShock : 1/21/2022 5:40 pm : link
Schoen wasting no time. I’m very interested in who else participates in the interviews
They will probably interview tomorrow in the AM
Chris684 : 1/21/2022 5:40 pm : link
Before the Bills get on a flight for KC.

Schoen will probably be leaving for NY after the interviews conclude.
Please no Frazier for HC

For what it’s worth, one of my college buddies is a die hard Bills fan, I’m talking drives 6 hours a few times a year to go to games. And he thinks Frazier would be a better HC than Daboll.

Aside from being an excellent DC, he’d be an experienced, stabilizing leader of the team.
Frazier at 62 I have no interest
Sean : 1/21/2022 5:47 pm : link
Give me someone young to work “lockstep” with Schoen. Flores & Daboll check those boxes.

Very good DC, but a mediocre HC.
Frazier...
bw in dc : 1/21/2022 5:47 pm : link
was 21-32 as a HC. This has to be a favor by Schoen.
Let's do it! Sounds like a great idea!

"Frazier was the head coach of the Vikings, compiling a 21-32 record over four seasons."

players love Frazier. Not sure that means he would be a good coach. He did take the Vikes to the playoffs in his first full year as coach there.

They said that about Shurmur after McAdoo, so I simply don’t know what to believe these days

Hasn’t McDermott basically admitted that he has given Frazier full ownership over the defense there? They are #1 in the league

I want Flores. But I think I’d rather have Frazier than Daboll. Daboll seems like a lot of the young OCs in the league which we could replicate. Frazier is a veteran defensive mind with legit leadership experience.
Is this also a minority HC interview requirement?

After the quality/promise we saw with the GM candidates,
Jimmy Googs : 1/21/2022 5:57 pm : link
the list of Head Coaching candidates leaves a lot to be desired.

Forgot who posted it but someone said something akin to "BBI doesn't want a retread Head Coach but also doesn't want a coach without prior Head Coaching experience."

And unfortunately it is pretty spot on.

The only thing I keep defaulting to is someone/anyone that you can have confidence to help fix the Offense. Watching Giant games where they can't score even in double-digits has become near unbearable...
I don’t read much in to this
CV36 : 1/21/2022 5:58 pm : link
Hopefully they will speak with several coaches. These two are the easiest to speak with first and potentially could be unavailable until mid February after Sunday. We knew they would be on the list and Schoen isn’t sitting on his hands.
The Frazier interview does satisfy the Rooney rule
Chris684 : 1/21/2022 6:00 pm : link
But more importantly it’s probably Schoen doing a solid for Frazier who seems like a great guy and whose success in Buffalo helped contribute to Schoen being able to land GM of NYG gig.

If nothing else Frazier being in on the interview circuit can potentially make him look more attractive elsewhere even if not here.

A guy who is a non first-timer but also not quite a true retread is Flores. That’s exactly why I think they should be interested him.

Unckear if Schoen will be in the same room as the candidates but would expect Giants ownership to connect via zoom. Crucial to get a first interview done with playoff assistants before their divisional round games b/c they could then be off-limits until post Super Bowl otherwise

Gotta imagine the interviews will be in the morning, seeing that the Bills gotta fly out to KC.

sense. Schoen knows these guys as well as anyone, their roles vs the HC, their strengths and weaknesses. This is about gauging their interest level, approach and what their thinking is about the Giants. If he’s impressed, he’ll need to wait until the Bills lose to go to the next step. If not, he’ll be free to interview the others and act on his timetable, not the leagues.

He is one of the best player development success stories in recent NFL history. It's probably justified.

The real trick is going to be seeing who is getting the kudos for it. Because Daboll is going to be the first guy to get a head coaching job from it and I'm not convinced that he's the reason Allen improved so much.
It Will Be Interesting To See If The HC Hiring Process
Trainmaster : 1/21/2022 7:04 pm : link
resembles the GM process (round of Zoom interviews, followed by in person) or if it's the exact opposite. Schoen wants Daboll and the proximity of Frazier lets the Giants meet the Rooney Rule. If they interview Frazier first, they could offer Daboll the job at the end of his interview in theory.

IF it goes as above and IF the Bills win, does the hiring of Daboll stay under wraps until the Bills season is over?

I highly doubt they make a hire without talking to other candidates. Specifically Flores and Quinn whom they already said they want to interview. Schoen said they will cast a wide net in this search. 2 interviews isn’t that…

Eric on Li : 1/21/2022 7:15 pm : link
Flores has coached a mediocre team to winning records each of the past 2 years (and overachieved in year 1).

Pederson won a Super Bowl (with Nick freaking Foles).

Harbough (.670 winning%) and Quinn coached in super bowls they easily could have won.

assuming Schoen does cast a wide net (as he says) this is the most qualified head coaching market I can ever remember.

as far as Daboll and Frazier go they both have certain appeals but unless Daboll absolutely lights it up (which he could) I think it's more likely one of the more proven guys gets the job.
