George Karlaftis will almost certainly be available at 5 or even 7. Who's his NFL comparable? Is he a Joey/Nick Bosa type? Maxx Crosby? Bc if he's comparable to any of those guys, sign me up. Ekwonu and Karlaftis in Rd 1 would be a great start to re-establishing Giants dominance in the trenches.
I can see that. Similar build and style.
I personally want Giants to draft Travon Walker from Georgia with one of our 1st 2 picks. Either at 7 or trade down.
He has gradually improved his stock over this season and now he’s been mocked top 15 and some top 10.
He’s a physical freak and gonna test well at the combine.
He reminds me of Justin Tuck who can play inside and edge. We have Osi lite Ojulari and Walker can play opposite of Ojulari and that’s gonna be fun to watch. I know Dane Brugler and Daniel Jeremiah are very high on him.
I like Ojabo, too but he’s still raw so I would prefer Walker over Ojabo at this time.
I guess a lot of people want Ekwonu at #5.
I would not be surprised 3 or 4 different players being overall #1.
As long as the Giants look to BPA they are going to get 2 really good Football players.
The lack of a solid QB class and the top picks not needing QBs is a weird dynamic we have not seen in a while.
Top shot putter, played water polo,
He is Feldman's 7th ranked Freak.
Teams will fall in love with his versatility. Karlaftis can play 4-3 defensive end and kick inside on pass rush downs and can also play 3-4 defensive end. Not to mention, he is going to test off the charts at the combine. He came in at seven on Bruce Feldman's Freak List because of his 4.69 40-yard dash over the summer, a 37-inch vert and a 10-1 broad. In the weight room, he power cleans 380 pounds and did a 505-pound front squat. These numbers are incredible for a player who is so well-rounded technically. Most of the time, a player is either athletic or technically sound, but Karlaftis is both.
This is a great defensive end group, and there is a lot of talent and depth. Many have Kayvon Thibodeaux at the top, and he is talented but is he the best in the class? Purdue's George Karlaftis is playing his way into the EDGE1 discussion and has the talent to surpass Thibodeaux.
Pro Football Network: The most impressive aspect of Karlaftis’ scouting report is his overall athleticism. For his size, he moves incredibly well, surprisingly so. He displays excellent burst, can change direction smoothly, and can often be found chasing down the opposition. His combination of size and speed is the stuff of nightmares for opposing quarterbacks.
Both did; Joey had 5 sacks his last year of college and Nick had 4; in Nick's case he had core muscle surgery that sidelined him for all but 3 games.

Sounds like he needs some refinement on his pass rush, but all the ability is there. If he were there in Rd 2 or in a Rd 1 trade-down, I'd seriously consider him, but probably not a Top 10 pick.
He is not worth a top 10 pick, probably not a top 20 pick. Compare his numbers to David Ojabo and Jermaine Johnson. Karlaftis doesn't deserve to be ahead of either of them. Looks at the numbers.
Karlaftis: 12 games, 4.5 sacks, 39 total tackles, 10 for a loss.
Johnson (the best head to head comparison, both play DE and both are the best player on their defensive line):
12 games, 11.5 sacks, 70 tackles, 17.5 for a loss. That's 2.5 times as many sacks, a little fewer than twice as many tackles, and 70 percent more for a loss. Johnson had 6 fewer SOLO tackles than Karlaftis had TOTAL (solo and assists) tackles. Why is this even a discussion?
Ojabo: 13 games, 11 sacks, 35 tackles, 12 for a loss.
For those who say Karlaftis was double teamed a lot? Johnson wasn't? Karlaftis was tied for second on his team in sacks. He was seventh on the team in total tackles. Johnson was first in sacks and second in total tackles. Purdue played three teams in the top 20, FSU played four.
Karlaftis' numbers are the same as Enagbare of South Carolina, who is considered a second rounder.
Comparing Karlaftis to the Bosas is crazy. But if you really want to have your eyes opened, compare him to Kerrigan's time at Purdue. Kerrigan's final season at Purdue:
12.5 sacks, 70 total tackles (50 solo, 11 more than Karlaftis' TOTAL), 26 for a loss (almost triple Karlaftis' 10). He had three fewer tackles for a LOSS than Karlaftis had SOLO tackles. Kerrigan had THREE years at Purdue that were handily better than any one of Karlaftis'. His last two he more than doubled Karlaftis' final season numbers.
Taking him at 7 would be a huge mistake. One that, hopefully with Gettleman gone, the Giants won't make.
There was no Robin to his batman on the team.
If he had Ojobu on the opposing wing he would have double digit sacks
Karlaftis had an incredible 18.1% pressure rate.
The 18.1% pressure rate this year is a colossal figure, especially considering he's already rushed the passer 221 times. For context, Chase Young's rate was 17.7% on 305 pass-rush snaps in his final season at Ohio State.

Looks like this answers my question. Would you guys be happy with Karlaftis and Cross at 5 and 7?

I remember a lot of discussion on this board about Rashan Gary's sack totals leading up to the 2019 draft, especially playing with other premier NFL talent teams had to account for. Meanwhile he just had an excellent breakout season. QB pressures tend to be a better indicator of future success than sack totals.

Not bad. Hendrickson has turned into a terrific player.
Trey Hendrickson has 14 sacks this year. I’d sign up for that production at 5
I guess a lot of people want Ekwonu at #5.
I would be stunned if he isn't available at 5.
How is he elite exactly?

I'd say it's about 50-50. The top three Edge rushers could easily go in the top 4. If that happens, that greatly increases the chances of Evan Neal falling to #5. The worst case for the Giants would be if the top four include Neal, Thibodeaux, Hutchinson and Karlaftis, and then there are no trade-down partners. That's not even so bad, just not ideal.

I could see the Jets taking him. The need is there.

And in a year he’ll be absolutely tearing it up for them instead of us. He’s an elite player at a position for which we need an elite talent. Want him in blue.
How is he elite exactly?
Not to be repetitive but you asked.
While he is 6'-4" and 275 he is not long. He does not have long arms.
He is position diverse and can play all over a 3-4 DE, 4-3 DE, 3-4 OLB, 4-3 DT,.
His speed and quickness allow him to play in coverage.
He is as good against the run as pressuring the passer. His motor allows him to chase down players away.
Karlaftis is similar to Hutchinson but played in relative obscurity
Why are the immediate comparisons the Bosa brothers or Maxx Crosby?
He’s a good player but not top 10 from what they heard from nfl scouts.
Mostly they heard he is mid to late 1st round prospects.
Of course you only need 1 team to fall in love with him inside top 10.
I like his motor and hand usage but I think we should draft him if we trade down.
There are many prognosticators who really like Karlaftis.
He has skills that should not be minimized

I wonder why he didn't have more sacks in college.

I love Hutchinson a ton but he will be gone by pick 2. Thibbadouex looks the part but seems to take plays off. Ojabu is raw but has high ceiling. Johnson looks like a modern day edge player.
I doubt he is available with our 2nd round pick.
Say we get an extra pick in the second round as part of a trade back, why not get both Karlaftis and Jackson?
His best game this year was likely against Iowa.

I know you shouldn’t judge based on one game but Karlaftis was extremely unimpressive in that Iowa game. He wasn’t quick enough to handle the Iowa skill players in the open field and when he rotated over to the left side was getting handled by the Hawkeyes’ redshirt freshman OT.
Are you sure this guy is even a first rounder?
He’s legit. 6’4 275 but he explodes off the ball. Incredible first step/twitch.
When he’s not doubled teamed, every snap he wins his 1v1 matchup and causes some type of disruption. Even wins when he’s double teamed too.
I’d compare him to Cam Jordan on the Saints but think he’s a bit more explosive. Could also go with a Bosa comp but I wanted to break the mold of comparing every white prospect to a white player.

Sorry but that is not close to what I just watched in the first 4 minutes of that Iowa cutup posted above. He was rarely double teamed and never made a play vs the run. Was handled most of the time on pass plays
Jeremiah had him lower in his mock and it seems Karlaftis is starting to drop in other mocks as well
