Defense yesterday or lack thereof

Essex : 1/24/2022 6:56 am
We can talk about the two extraordinary QBs in Allen and Mahommes and they are extraordinary. But the defense in yesterday’s games were so atrocious. In both games guys were wide open at the end of the game. How does Cupp get that wide open? How did Davis just not have anyone around him in the second game? How did Kelce get that wide open?

Not to take anything away from Mahommes and Allen but the defense yesterday were just atrocious. Defense are normally bad, but guys can’t be that wide open in a big football game.
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing

It was exciting to watch those frenzied last minutes, but it just came down to who had the ball last. They moved the ball at will. Not actually good football. Definitely not my kind of football.

The D on both sides was just gassed.
I was amazed how Mahomes always was able to get outside of pocket

Keep him in pocket.....different game
The modern NFL
Dnew15 : 1/24/2022 7:08 am : link
is built to reward teams that can put up lots of points in a hurry AND get exceptional play from the QB.

As a defense, the modern NFL can ask but two things - turning the ball over and getting to the QB.

Not saying you’re wrong, but that’s easier said than done. Two QBs (Mahomes and Allen), with skill sets and talent like they have, can make good defenses look bad. Now the Bills tackling and taking angles on tackles in the secondary is another story.
Tired defense
armstead98 : 1/24/2022 7:11 am : link
Against modern NFL teams with awesome QBs and weapons at every position don’t stand a chance.
My view is and always has been that defense wins championships.
Spider56 : 1/24/2022 7:13 am : link
And I think you saw this on Saturday, a little bit in the Rams / Bucs and going in to Bills / Chiefs, both defenses were at the top of the league. The anomaly is that Allen and Mahomes are super talented and can beat you in so many different ways. When they click like yesterday, both of them are impossible to stop.
Certainly easier said than done.....
George from PA : 1/24/2022 7:15 am : link
Even the kickoff with 13sec.....had to take time off clock

13 seconds are 2 plays....10/9 seconds is one play and hail mary......which he still probably would have gotten anyway..
Atrocious Defense
Mdgiantsfan : 1/24/2022 7:19 am : link
First and foremost that is exactly what the NFL and the networks want. QBs going up wnd down the field at will. As a fan, that’s not what I like. While extremely entertaining the defense was atrocious. The league is already geared towards giving thr offense an advantage, but when you add bad defense it is just ripe for Tecmo Bowl-like games.

How does Kelce pickup that many yards when it appeared that he was the only receiver on the left side. I get that the DB would want to guard against him running an out route to get out of bounds. But he easily picked up 20-30 yards to get them into FG range.

Yeah, but guys were literally wide open. Allen and Mahommes are superheroes, but that doesn’t mean they have to throw to open guys, especially when the clock is your friend.
Arenaball NFL has been awful

It simply is an inferior version of football than the one I grew up watching 30+ years ago
They should eliminate

The can't bump a receiver after 5 yards rule.
It was like watching

Someone else playing pin ball. I agree with Greg, compared to the NFL 30 years ago, it’s like playing checkers as opposed to chess. It looked more like a skills competition than a football game or a home run derby as opposed to a baseball game. A demolition derby vs a nascar race. Oh well you get the idea. I woke up this morning and I was still thinking about the game and like being witness to a car accident, it was exciting but it’s not something I want to see every week.
Do complex secondary schemes mixing man and zone

In various ways break down late in games under stress and fatigue? The non coverage of Krupp and Hill was astounding. Repeated missed assignments. Maybe keep things simple as the game drags on?
There's 2 parts to this
Jerry in_DC : 1/24/2022 9:14 am : link
1) There were some major mistakes down the end of both of those games yesterday to be sure

2) Offense win championships. All 4 defenses on the field on Sunday were good. (And to be fair the Rams D actually did pretty well in that game). But a great offense is going to win most of the time. By the end of the game, once the KC and Buffalo were letting it rip, those QBs and O's could move it at will. Those are the 2 best teams in the league and they have the 2 most unstoppable offenses in the league.
It Looked to Me
varco : 1/24/2022 9:28 am : link
Looked as if both teams decided to sub in the Giants' defense for their own in the final stretch of the game. The fact that star receivers were seemingly uncovered and running wild was just stunning. The mix ups in coverage and lack of effective safety play made me feel right at home.
Those broken plays are sometimes accomplished by design
Ten Ton Hammer : 1/24/2022 9:32 am : link
There's more misdirection and craft in play structure than there was 30 years ago. It looks like a DB just isn't paying attention, but a lot of the time he's seeing a play unfold in front of him, thinking he recognizes it, and then too late realizing what he thought he saw was wrong.

Agreed. I cringe when talking heads talk about last night or that Chiefs Rams regular season game in such glowing terms. Not taking away anything from the QBs last night who were obviously phenomenal, its just not as enjoyable a product for me. 49ers @ Packers was my favorite game of the weekend.

I hear you to some degree - especially on it being really easy to score at the end of games. But on a play-to-play, scheme, formation basis, there's a lot more happening in the modern game.

I'm watching the Monday Night Giants-Redskins game from 86 in small increments when I have time. And it's just really basic. 2 TEs, pitch to Morris, gain of 4 yards, repeat. The passing game didn't have much variation, not a lot of motion or different formations. Both QBs have ~50% completion on the year.

I get the appeal of defensive games, physicality, etc. But when you go back and watch some of the games, it can be kind of static and repetitive.
The Defense played well
ZoneXDOA : 1/24/2022 12:35 pm : link
These offenses are packed with talent. Dripping with it. Both Allen and Mahomes had to pull the ball down and run more often than not because of tight coverage. They used that designed run play for Allen a lot to try to soften up the coverage and that was somewhat effective. But Gabriel Davis? Look, they TRIED to cover that kid. He was wide open ONLY because he shook the absolute EFF outta the defender! He surprised me with his ability to break a cornerback's ankles. Watch those TDs again and you will see what I mean.

Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes were a problem for their opposing defenses. If they were playing against poor defenses the point total definitely would have broke 100.

Don't get me wrong, there were mistakes made and neither were the 86 Giants or the 85 Bears, but nobody was going to stop Mahomes or Allen from doing what they did last night. They were exerting MAXIMUM effort and it was noticeable. Both sides of the ball played some high level football.
I agree with Greg on LI.

The modern NFL game stinks. This sort of volleyball is grossly inferior to what the game was 50 or 40 or 30 years ago.

That's why I don't watch much NFL anymore. Went from a guy who religiously watched 2, 3, or when possible, 4 games a week to a guy who watches less than one a week, can go for a month without watching an NFL game, and rarely bothers to watch a whole game.
