I agree and as hitdog said above, it's not Apple's fault that the Giants over drafted him. In typical fashion that we saw, the Giants did not do their due diligence on Apple. They saw the physical gifts, his youth, and coming from a big program as all pluses.

But in the end, Apple was a panic pick. The Giants wanted Conklin or Floyd, but Reese's leaky ship let everyone know it, so they got jumped. They assumed that Tunsil was going to be taken earlier, and when he slipped, that messed up their plans. It was very similar to 1996 when they wanted Lawrence Phillips to be picked so they could get Rice, Hardy or Ogden. Of course it didn't happen and they just grabbed Cedric Jones.

What the Giants should have done was realize that he was middle school level immature. The whole thing about him not cooking for himself was less literal (though probably was true too), but more that he got led around the nose by his mother. And if you did any amount of work to look into his family, you'd see that his mother was pain in the ass loose cannon at Ohio State and getting her in front of the NY media, where she used to work anyway, was a recipe for disaster. But it's only investing several million dollars in a college kid, why bother doing your homework.

Apple is who is his, he's not growing up anytime soon, that's why he's on his 4th team in 6 years. Mahomes is going to light him up next week, so I hope Apple is getting his shots in now on twitter because he's going to get buried on Sunday.

But again, the Giants set him up to fail taking him at #10 overall.

he was over drafted by a team that has not won in 10yrs-- he was drafted early in a time many giants fans have focused more on the "redemption tour" and blamed every young kid for why "we wasted eli's late years". He was not good as a giant. but like several others he got a bulls eye and was too immature to handle it. the organization has many examples of sucking at this.

he has actually played well the back half of the season and made a key play to put his team into the AFC title game.

I can't disagree with anything you and Jim said, but this is still the wrong way to go about voicing your displeasure. He needs to understand the person that the person he is hurting the most with tweet is himself and his career.

Good post. And what a shock, an immature kid coming out of college immediately gets hammered by fanbase and media. You'd think the organization might want to figure out how to deal with, manage, and support some of these kids especially in this media market when everything, every statement, every misstep by the player, family member is amplified. Fwiw, I give Joe Judge credit for how he had Toney's back after some injudicious responses to media questions. Apple was a terrible draft pick at #9. He flamed out here. But he's one game away from a SB and he's enjoying his moment. Let him.

I never could understand why they panicked ( if they did) or were unprepared when they picked Cedric Jones. They expected one of the five who were actually picked to be there. The logical thing is to be prepared and don’t assume that would happen. Make a list beforehand of the top 6 you want and be prepared if things don’t go as you planned and take number 6 on your list. So either they were stupid on not be ready for all possibilities or their scouting was awful or probably both.

I don’t think it’s right for fans to swear at players or throw things at players or otherwise be abusive. But Apple should be called out for his immature tweets that fail to recognize that his behaviour was a reason he didn’t last in NY and NO. And as soon as his physical gifts deteriorate Cindy will also get rid of him because he lacks leadership and maturity

I actually think the majority are good fans who value quality football discussion…sure we get emotional and many of us are prone to occasional outbursts, and outlets like BBI are a way to vent frustrations.

But you’re right there are some who take it way overboard. Most of us have questioned the Giants org structure and family ties, but a few seem pissed off that Chris Mara hasn’t been executed by firing squad.

I always try to remember these guys are just kids when they first come out, prone to immature behaviors (god knows I’m glad there wasn’t Twitter when I was 23.)

Apple made himself look bad and did some dumb stuff here (and his Mom’s mouthiness helped make him a target), but I can also see why he feels compelled to lash out. I can only imagine some of the shit that’s been thrown at him on social media, some people are awful when afforded the veil of anonymity on the internet

One of my buddies worked with Dave Brown for a couple years, our old QB from the 90s who was a lightening rod for criticism bc he didn’t live up to his draft status. He said Brown was a really good guy, but still harbored some bitterness over how nasty some Giants fans were to him

You can say these guy got paid to play pro football for a while, don’t cry for them, and that’s fair to a degree. But they’re still human beings like the rest of us

I try to save my resentment for the guys who abuse women or don’t support their kids

Garbage as a player? Yes, of course he was. Nothing wrong with disliking any player and stating that fact via BBI or wherever. my point was we all know some fans attack these guys in an ugly personal way online.

I don’t give a rats ass about Eli Apple the player either, and hate that we blew a draft pick on him. I’m just saying I can see why he’d lash out.

of a panic pick.

this is where jerry reese should've traded down and regrouped. that first round was pretty good. This is why I don't believe in "well if you trade down you lose out on higher rated players"

well if your board is all fucked up and your view on your teams needs IS COMPLETELY ASININE maybe don't trust your board that much.

we had jenkins and DRC at corner how about trade down and take some linemen your previous SB winning coaches said you desperately needed? or instead of spending cap money on second and third tier RBs and took Brandon Jacobs 2.0 Derrick Henry?

i know hindsight is 20/20 but i knew the eli apple pick was a wasted one when it happened.

Can I have some money, friend?

Yeah dude sure. Anytime you're in Little Egg Harbor Township, NJ... hit me up. I'm not shy. I'm always giving money away (taxes) in this state.

Garbage as a player? Yes he was.

I worked with someone knew who his dad (who lived on LBI) and told me him and the dad were assholes. Who knows?

I agree. I don't think it's nice to make personal threats to these guys (and don't condone anyone else doing so) but I cannot pretend to care to feel bad for any of these guys.
