RCPhoenix : 1/24/2022 9:22 am : link
I love his energy as an announcer and in that game he showed he was a fan like the rest of us of what we were watching. Plus I think he's one of the better analysts calling games.
Totally agree
eric2425ny : 1/24/2022 9:23 am : link
It’s just non stop babbling. Annoying as hell. I think he could be a good announcer based on knowledge of the game, etc. but he talks so much it takes away from the game.

Not to mention the fact that he sounds like he smoked three packs of cigs by the end of the game from all of the non-stop yelling.
He gets paid on a per-word basis...

The beauty of Pat Summerall and John Madden is they knew when to shut up.
He does talk to much, but he also seems to know what he's talking

about - unlike a number of broadcasters.
The best is his thinking out loud

"JIMMMMMM, should they do a Squib kick here. I think they should JIMMMMMMMMMMMM, I WOULD DO IT. DO A SQUIB KICK HERE."

It is pretty annoying.
At the end if was awful
PatersonPlank : 1/24/2022 9:25 am : link
First he's trying to create mystery around if Kelcie caught the ball or not, then he starts squealing like a teenage girl at a Beatles concert when they announce TD. Everyone I was with was appalled.
They need to give Nantz veto power or a nuclear key
j_rud : 1/24/2022 9:26 am : link
Something that Romo's mic only works if 2 sober and sane adults in the room sign off on it. His "IM SO NERVOUS" before the Chiefs FG to close regulation was horrific.

That’s as close as he’ll ever get to a Championship game so he got a little too excited lol.

This entire thread has a 'get off my lawn' mentality to it.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Mine is just different.
Just another

job that Tony isn't good at.
I think he may be reading his press clippings
Section331 : 1/24/2022 9:29 am : link
a bit too much. I still like him, but yeah, there are big moments in games where he should just let the action speak for itself, but he doesn't let the moment breathe. I have to think his producers are working on that with him.
He is overrated

for sure.

I love it. Love his energy, his knowledge, his enthusiasm for the game. Does he talk too much? Sometimes, but his comments are insightful. And he was right -- not so much squib as force them to field a kick inside the ten.

This^^^. It gets to be too much. While I can stomach for a little while, but I find myself wanting to mute the TV.

They are a bit different roles. Romo is a color guy. He’s supposed to add insight. The Manning’s are doing their own show with the football game as a backdrop.
I like him

Romo is great.
I’ve soured on him
Gap92 : 1/24/2022 9:38 am : link
Not a second goes by where he isn’t jabbering. He does have great insights but they’re becoming overshadowed imo by his non-stop talking. Like he’s had 5 cups of coffee and snorted a few rails of meth.
It’s funny, when he was new at it I found him
mfsd : 1/24/2022 9:42 am : link
really annoying, then he grew on me with quality insights into the game, but now he’s wearing me out again bc he just bleats so damn much

He'd be better on pre and post game shows than in the booth for this reason imo.

I think both this and the OP are true though.

He's absolutely the best analyst, but he's gotten to a point where he thinks everyone wants to hear him 24/7 and that's also a problem.
he does talk too much
Enzo : 1/24/2022 9:45 am : link
but most of what he's saying is on point - so it's not quite the disaster of a broadcast it could be IMO.

You have got to let the listener take in what they are seeing. It is like we are listening to his inner monolog as if he is on the field trying to read a defense. Still like him in comparison to others but wish he would suppress some thoughts
We watched most of the game with mute on.
aka dbrny : 1/24/2022 10:00 am : link
I find that I get more out of the game that way
Ray Scott was the best announcer
yalebowl : 1/24/2022 10:02 am : link
Primarily an announcer for Packer games he later moved up and partnered with Pat Summeral for national games. Famous for calling games like “Starr…to Dowler…Touchdown! He believed in less was more.

My personal favorite was Giants announcer Chris Schenkel.
He does have diarrhea of the mouth
Dave on the UWS : 1/24/2022 10:11 am : link
(been accused of that myself). BUT he has a different style as a "color" commentator. He doesn't just do analysis. His style is like one of two guys at a bar commenting on what they are seeing. He can get tiring, but I really like the fresh approach.
Romo
TyreeHelmet : 1/24/2022 10:15 am : link
Sees the field incredibly well and is able to process and convey that analysis really quickly. But he does simply just speak too much now. He needs to just relax a little bit and let Nantz lead him more.

I still overall enjoy the broadcast though.

Heads and shoulders over Chris Collinsworth who is an automatic hit the mute button
Eric, that’s perfect

I was texting with my fam, trying to describe how Romo was distracting from the actual drama of the game. I wish I came up with the “letting the game breathe.” 👍
So what do you say Tony
ghost718 : 1/24/2022 10:20 am : link
I really don't mind any of the announcers on non Giant games
arniefez : 1/24/2022 10:20 am : link
as long as they do their homework. During Giant games I don't like any of them.
Yup. Like most of them nowadays, he thinks gets paid by the word.
Victor in CT : 1/24/2022 10:30 am : link
have a big cup of STFU and take a breath every now and then.
Romo would be fine in person
Dave in PA : 1/24/2022 10:35 am : link
If he was sitting on your couch doing what he does, it would be interesting. On the broadcast, he’s overkill. He’s giddy like a little kid, which is fun sometimes but also amateurish in the biggest moments that are filled with enough tension that we don’t need you to tell us how excited you are or whatever nonsense pops into his head
They have become unwatchable.....what a great game only to be
Dinger : 1/24/2022 10:37 am : link
spoiled by Nantz and Romo...you know its bad when u yearn for Aikman and buck.

I was sitting here and defending Romo after the games last week. I generally do like listening to him, his knowledge of the game is second to none as a Color guy.

But I'm 100% with you, he was brutal at the end of that game. He sounded like he came in his pants about 3 different times, just no self control whatsoever and yelling like a middle schooler. It kind of made me realize why he might not have been the best pressure player when he was playing.

Still like him more than the other PbP guys. Aikman is just a blob of nothing. Collinsworth is just a douche. But I totally get it if people don't like Romo's style.
I'm a big fan..
moze1021 : 1/24/2022 10:40 am : link
Really like him
He reminds me of that annoying cousin
smshmth8690 : 1/24/2022 10:44 am : link
that you only see on Thanksgiving at grandma's house. You know, the casual football fan that constantly talks during the game about how great Mahomes is, even though he's not playing in the game your watching, and then get's over excited for a play, even though it's the only game they watch except for the Super Bowl. The only difference is Romo does have football knowledge.
Romo = mute
geepeegee : 1/24/2022 10:44 am : link
I simply cannot listen to his drivel, it's mute on every game he does. He simply looks at the screen and reacts to what he sees. "Jim! That grass is soo green! WOW!" Compare him to Aikman doing a non-Cowboys game. Aikman provides details and insight. I'm not interested in a hyperactive idiot yelling about the game.

Having said that, my son likes him. Maybe I'm just yelling "get off my lawn"...
Love seeing a guy with a 2-6 playoff record
David B. : 1/24/2022 10:44 am : link
Talking about what teams should be doing in a playoff game.
Incredibly Annoying
BlueVinnie : 1/24/2022 10:46 am : link
I didn't think Romo could get more annoying than he was last week but he found a way.
He was brutal at the end of the game. It should have been one of those classic moments when good announcers say nothing or very little and just let the scene play out. Instead it was like "Tony, I'm begging you, please just shut the f*ck up".
I might be wrong
KDubbs : 1/24/2022 10:53 am : link
if anyone can check but on the last Bills td drive on the 1st play I think Allen throws it deep and its a miscommunication with Diggs. They show the replay and Romo says something like you throw here to get the drive started. I think it was over the middle to the rb out of the backfield. While he is showing it I believe the DL is dropping off or a LB is like right there underneath and Im saying to myself "damn, he showed us on replay how he would've choked at the end of this game."
Nantz should give him some tips on this
mattlawson : 1/24/2022 10:55 am : link
No commentary is necessary in the biggest moments
I thought they really
mittenedman : 1/24/2022 10:56 am : link
botched the calls down the stretch.

They were not capturing the drama of some of the important moments correctly. IMO.
I can’t stand Collinsworth
djm : 1/24/2022 11:01 am : link
Yet have no problems with romo. And that makes no sense at all since they both talk a lot. For some reason romo doesn’t bother me. It’s a phenomenon.
If he spoke half as much,
Joe Beckwith : 1/24/2022 11:08 am : link
his insight and commentary would be significantly more appreciated.
