The Last Giants Loss that Hurt

christian : 1/24/2022 9:25 am
The Bills/Chiefs game reminded me what caring about football was like. And it dawned on me, I can barely remember the last Giants loss that hurt.

The 2016 playoff game felt over to me when the Pack hit the Hail Mary before half. That game didn’t really hurt.

I think maybe the last game to bum me out was getting blanked by the Falcons in 2012 and hurting the Giants playoff chances. And the last game that hurt the Jackson punt return?
Week 2 @ Washington this year

@ Philly last year.

I would go with the games in Philadelphia where
St. Jimmy : 1/24/2022 9:29 am : link
they would have a lead and then blow it were killers under Shurmur and Judge. Those were awful losses.
Probably something in 2021
Jerry in_DC : 1/24/2022 9:30 am : link
when I still thought we had a chance.

2016 was a completely conventional playoff loss. It sucked, but we were underdogs, GB was the better team, and it played out exactly like it should have.

Last really bad one was the 2008 playoffs.
I'll say Washington early this season.
an_idol_mind : 1/24/2022 9:31 am : link
I was really hoping that Week 1 was not emblematic of what the season would become and hoped that the team might actually get above .500 with Washington and Atlanta on the schedule. Blowing those two games and starting off 0-3 yet again was a very disappointing feeling.

I dont think any of the losses in recent years hurt because you really expect this team to blow games. For me, you would have to go much farther back to when we lost games where we clearly should have won.

Playoff game vs the 49ers when we had a complete melt down in the 4th QTR blowing a huge lead for example.

The 2002 playoff loss in SF

still hurts, as does the OT loss to LAR in 1989.

The GB playoff game was one to remember
weeg in the bronx : 1/24/2022 9:37 am : link
We had every chance to go up big early in the game, OBJ has zero impact, We were still in the game but then get crushed in 4Q, The Hail Mary was a kick in the teeth.
In that ‘16 GB game alluded to, we were
Big Blue '56 : 1/24/2022 9:49 am : link
kicking Rodgers’ ass, I mean A LOT that first half. Then the Hail Mary changed everything. Not to mention OBJ’s drops and the killer injury to DRC..

You’d never know how well we did given the second half letdown and of course the final score

I’m talking like games that ruined your next day.

The last game where I was gutted was probably the Jackson + Dodge game.

I’ve certainly been annoyed by the last 10 years of games. But they’ve stopped bothering me.

The Giants got within a point on a huge play to Tavaris King in the second half.

The DRC injury really took the air out of that game. The Giants defense was predicted on a shutdown secondary, and DRC was fabulous all year.

up 31-10 with around 7 1/2 minutes to play and losing was impossible to fathom. You knew the next week’s game that would have gotten us into the pkayoffs with a win, was NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. They were still numb. Played like zombies

Everyone seems to forget the DRC injury. That was the game changer. If DRC didn't get injured we win that game, even with the dropped passes.

After they won the Super Bowl in 2011, there hasn't really been any reason to be too crushed by any loss. The 2016 season was a mirage, that loss in Green Bay was as predictable as it gets.

in the 2nd half, I felt like it was only a matter of time before the GB O started clicking. I never felt like we were in control of that game. For me, the most recent painful loss would be the Philly game with the DeSean punt return. To blow that lead and then lose it by punting to someone you knew you shouldn't kick to was a heartbreaker.

That game vs the Eagles I was watching at a bar and I was so distraught I left as soon as it ended and forgot to pay my tab which I realized while eating dinner that night. After dinner I went back and paid.
For me, it's the opening day 2015 loss to the Cowboys
sb from NYT Forum : 1/24/2022 10:47 am : link
...That was awful. Coughlin completely blew that game. And I have been basically numb ever since.

The 2016 playoff loss sucked, but they were bad that whole game, so it didn't "hurt" so to speak.

Yes.

Week 2 @ Washington was when it dawned on me that we were 0-2 again and very well should have been 2-0 and pretty much had to be because although Atlanta was coming up next we had a tidal wave of a schedule after that.

Giants were the best team in football that season. The loss to the Iggles in the aftermath of Plax/shooting incident was a killer. Had the Plax thing not happened, I still believe Giants would have won back-to-back SBs.

I was visiting my parents and the game wasn't on locally so we went out to a bar to watch. I left after the 3rd down play and sat on the sidewalk outside - I heard the punt return but didn't see it. I don't think I actually watched a replay of it until like 2015.

Maybe that TD shootout between Eli and Drew Brees with late facemask penalty on our kicker that set them up for a FG at the buzzer.

Losses that mattered...probably the Niners playoff game or the Desean Jackson punt return because it was the Eagles...

I'm pretty sure that punt return had Marcellus Rivers as the last line of defense... and I can still see him (in slow motion) in his cement shoes trying to prevent the inevitable. Yeah I am so ecstatic that everyone is stirring up these happy memories... LOL
Actually no...
Johnny5 : 1/24/2022 12:06 pm : link
... that Marcellus Rivers memory may have been before Eli was even the QB. So two punt returns from the Eagles that are burned into my memory... lol DeSean Jackson and I think the one I'm remembering now was Brian Westbrook
I think every season lately
an_idol_mind : 1/24/2022 12:08 pm : link
has a game that dashed my hopes that things might be looking up. This year, as I mentioned, it was the Week 2 Washington game for me. Last year it was the Week 3 49ers game where San Francisco was running with backups across the board and the Giants got absolutely slaughtered.

2019 it was probably the Cardinals game. I wasn't expecting playoffs, but I was hoping that Jones was more along the lines of what he showed in the Bucs/Washington games than what he had shown in the Vikings/Patriots games.

Every year, there's been some point where I hoped that maybe the season wouldn't be so bad and a game in September or October crushed all hope.

I was home from college for the Christmas break and I had like three people call me on the way home asking me If I could drive home. Then when I realized at dinner what I had done, my dad drove me back to the bar to pay.

You look at that punt again, and there were a crowd of Giants around him. When he muffed the punt, I was ecstatic......then, jaw dropping agony when he came out of that crowd and headed for the goal line. It took me a while to absorb that one.
