These days, Gates is optimistic his football career will continue on. The Giants are hopeful as well. On Monday, Gates updated reporters on his progress. “I’m doing good,” Gates said. “I’m making good steps and good strides in my rehab. I can’t really tell you a specific timeline on when I’m going to be back or not. I’m just taking it day by day, just trying to get better each day and just listening to what the trainers are saying. “My plan is to get back on the field as fast as possible. I don’t know if it’s going to be this year or whatever, but just taking it day by day.” |
Exactly how I feel. Reminds me so much of Richie
IMO, that doesn't sound good. (not sure if he will be back even this year)
I don't know if it was genuine but he was ramping up his training and looking forward to coming back.
He seems like a hard worker and a great guy.

No worries, but his injury is one of the things that bugged me most about last season. He looked like a foundational piece and now his career is in doubt.

I also heard Gates on a Talkin Giants PodCast. He sounded even more optimistic than the actual press release.

So ridiculous that they moved him the way they did.
Not expecting him to be practicing at that point but the progress over next 4 months is key
I don’t expect him to play in September but possibly available for our 2022 playoffs run. :)
Or not
That's insane.
+1 exactly what I was thinking with the comparison to Richie
Yes, that column needed something...

Me too. The loss of Gates and Lemieux and the retirements of their backups in training camp was doesn't get the attention it deserves. It was an absolute disaster and left us with Price, Skura, martin and Bredeson and we saw ow that turned out! If you want to dig a little deeper you can add the loss of Kyle Murphy who the staff for whatever that is worth was supposedly very high on.
I'm taking it on blind faith that our new GM will not count on him for 2022 but will leave the light on in case he's ready. I'm also taking it on blind faith that our new GM will prioritize and do everything in his power to upgrade the OL and the front 7 on defense.

Gates was a loss.
But if you really to want to point to the disaster regarding the OL, it was coming out of Free Agency and the Draft having lost Zeitler and only adding a jag in Zach Fulton.
The Front Office took a bad risk their existing OL unit would be sufficient, and it failed miserably...

They certainly placed way too much faith in Solder/Peart and Hernandez that is for sure. I think that maybe part of that was a belief that they were in decent to good shape at LT,LG & OC. When two out of three of those positions became gaping holes the whole thing was a wreck!
You hope Gates can make it back but you have to plan as if he is done

The OL was as much as a wreck as the morons that put it together.
If anything, they needed to be overly concerned with it and invest heavily versus a theme of I hope it works out. Their own self-evaluation on prior OL decisions should have told them that.
If they ever did a self-evaluation that is...
You hope Gates can make it back but you have to plan as if he is done
Stretch - that's right.
A prudent triage plan on the OL suggests do not assume Gates, Peart and even Lemieux are available this season. And guys like Hernandez are Solder done as Giants, and Price, Bredeson and Skura are below average as reserves.
That leaves a whole lot to get done on the OL this offseason and next.
* Have to grab a Guard and probably a new Swing Tackle in Free Agency. This is a Must.
* Really need to add a Tackle and Center by the end of Rd 3 in this Draft. Another Must.
* Figure out whether Bredeson or Skura is worth keeping if Lemieux isn't going to be ready by Sept
* In 2023 - put another Guard and probably a developmental Tackle on roster.

Best moment of the season: Gates getting a standing ovation. You could see he was surprised. I think he thought the fans did not even know who he was. Never saw a guy leaving the field with that severe an injury smiling. I got a little choked up at the time.
If he makes it back into a training camp anywhere I will be surprised.
Hoping for he best Nick Gates ... !!!
Wish him the best on his recovery but the Giants may be looking to cut bait with Gates as part of their rebuilding efforts and whatever cap relief his deal offers.
