Bills Defensive line and edge players

Platos : 1/24/2022 3:03 pm
is it kind of alarming to anyone else that the drafted players for the bills kind of stink in these groups and the ones that are good are mostly from DG's tenure in Carolina?

the one that sticks out the most to me is AJ Epenesa. I remember people saying the giants were in play on him early in the 1st round. Then he dropped to the second and has been invisible(lost a ton of weight, maybe related). Same with Greg Rosseau who everyone freaked out the second he got his first sack.

Ed Oliver started heating up but his first 2 years you can easily say Dex has been better.

just something I noticed because it seems they invested a good amount in DL recently.
Didn't they have the #1 defense

I dont know about that

I saw some good things from Rousseau this year and he is a baby and raw. But I still saw him collapsing the pocket vs Mahomes. They seem to kind of go after those long athletic types and I would be all for that. It's how we landed Tuck/Osi/JPP.

Yeah and Rousseau had like 40-50 tackles with 4 sacks, 4 PD, and an INT. His rookie year was pretty good. He was strong against the run.
No one hits 7 out of 7 draft picks every year

The Bills starting lineup is virtually all recently drafted or signed players so they're doing something right. Brandon Beane came from Carolina so it makes sense he raided the players he probably had a hand in picking.
rousseau and oliver have been good

espensa does stink. i still think he's miscast in a 4-3 and is more of a 3-4 end, but there were big question marks on his athletic ability coming out

Bills were #1 in Yards allowed per game and #2 in points allowed.

Man, what terrible drafting. LOL
I guess i'm basing this on too much of last year

where they were middle of the pack defensively.

The bigger issue seemed

to be Mahomes is sneaky strong amongst his other talents. They got pressure at times but could not get him down.
They are built similar to the Patriots and how the Giants

to a degree

Strong up the middle

Top safeties, strong MLB (losing Blake this year really hurt us) and strong DTs.

Next is a focus on CBs followed by situational edge players
Your forgetting that they drafted Basham from Wake Forest
Rick in Dallas : 1/24/2022 3:54 pm : link
He was also getting pressure on Mahomes
It's a pretty darned good defense

that struggled vs the Chiefs, it happens especially late in games when they're tired and playing at Arrowhead. I think it's a rather young unit as well, they're learning how to win the big games (which I bet contributes to their 0-5 record in one-score games).

They put a significant emphasis on their secondary too, similar to the Patriots but bigger up front.

Yeah that defense looked pretty good. Both defenses looked pretty gassed to me at the end of that game.
#1 in defensive DVOA
JB_in_DC : 1/24/2022 4:03 pm : link
#1 in pressure and hurry % (while middle of the pack blitzing %). Not seeing a problem.
I'll say this... Ive never seen a QB that was SO close to being sacked
blueblood : 1/24/2022 4:04 pm : link
so many times in one game and find a way to escape and get away. There were so many times they ALMOST had him and Mahomes summoned his inner Fran Tarkenton and did just enough to get away and escape

Not to mention, arguably the best defensive player on the team in Tre'Davious White has been out for months now.

The Bills were almost fast enough to catch him dozens of times. They were chasing him all over the field. No wonder they were gassed at the end.

The dilemma for every team but KC has to be: How do you find a defense of guys that can chase Mahomes all day long and still have the legs to catch him with 5 minutes left in the game? The Bills had the #1 defense in the league and by the end of the game they couldn't keep up AT ALL. (The KC defense couldn't contain Allen, either. Those two guys are the gold standard going forward.)
More of an FYI here..

But when the Bills beat the Chiefs in the regular season they had Tre'Davious White at corner. He's one of the best in the league. Without him, this opened up many more options and favorable matchups for the Chiefs offense.
I will never

understand what compels people to put up these posts. Breakdowns at the end of the 19th game of the year against the best offense in football does not wipe out an entire season of incredible success. Yes, the Bills were the number one ranked defense in football for a reason. We should be so lucky to have the players referred to in our front-seven rotation.
the bills scheme left a lot to be desired
GiantsFan84 : 1/24/2022 5:13 pm : link
in that game
Dexter Lawrence has been better than Ed Oliver

He really is scary. So fun to watch. And Allen wasn't a slouch either. What a great game.
