Second Interview for Brian Daboll; Dan Quinn Interview Completed - ( New Window )
What’s the hold up with Flores?
Sean : 1/24/2022 4:54 pm : link
The Quinn interview feels like gathering information from a division rival.

Good question.

Art Stapleton

@art_stapleton
Expectation is that Brian Flores will interview in-person this week.

Say what you will, but he is clearly the most coveted candidate out there. Almost every team with a vacancy wants a shot at him.
I don't understand
Josh in the City : 1/24/2022 5:05 pm : link
the appeal of Dan Quinn. His Atlanta teams had fantastic offenses (with Kyle Shanahan running the show on that side of the ball) and poor defenses. Once Shanahan was gone that team completely fell off a cliff. Quinn may be a good DC but what has he done to become so coveted in this coaching cycle?
Not a whole lot going on with us

Definitely seems like Daboll is the guy and the rest of this is just window dressing.

Well-connected, well liked people such as Quinn often get two or three swings to be a head coach.

told me Quinn would bring Mike McDaniel from SF with him wherever he goes as his OC. The ties are tight between them for turning around McDaniel's life and Shanahan wouldn't block it since it gives McDaniel an opportunity to call plays.

Took the shittiest Dallas defense in history and turned it into a killer machine. Micah Parsons probably deserves points in whatever deal he signs.

.

First I've heard of it...it would make Quinn a lot more palpable for me that's for sure. Mike McDaniel is the next in line of that Shanahan tree that's going to go off as an offensive play caller IMO.
The only positive I see..

with hiring Quinn is we would take away the architect of Dallas' much improved offense.

Otherwise, I don't see any appeal. Pederson seems much more qualified.

Interesting that Pederson seems to be getting a lack of buzz with all these openings.

I like the sound of this. Just need Quinn to impress Schoen

Say what you will about quinn, but he never purposefully lost a game. I can not understand the infatuation with pederson. I want nothing to do with any coach that would ever intentionally lose a game.

is getting a lot of positive buzz around the league, reports are he had a killer interview with the Vikings. I hope there's interest, and time, to talk to him here before a decision's is made.

He interviewed, I recall, with the Vikings and Bears. I thought Miami had him lined up, too.

Maybe any momentum is being delayed by the Rooney Rule requirements.

When Carton said Giants fans wouldn't want him because something so inconsequential I thought he was smoking something, guess not.

I don't know anyone that doesn't love Dan Quinn as a person.

He's in that Andy Reid-ish "universally loved person" tier around the league, which means he will have no problems hiring a good staff.

And when it comes to HC candidates, who they can get for staff means EVERYTHING.

Is this your friend's opinion or is he someone in the know? I know the background with the two of them so wasn't sure if it was just an opinion given the relationship they have.
in the know

but he has given me info that was off in the past. Has access to general inside NFL info, not really specific to any team.
I get that

Coaches that took a team to a Super Bowl don’t grow on trees, but I’m just so lukewarm on this guy.

Partially the Super Bowl collapse, partially how his team fell apart the second Shanahan left (though the roster was poor). He did turn around Dallas’s D this year but still, I’d like to look elsewhere.

Never mind the fact that Pederson has won a Super Bowl. I understand being mad in the moment, but if he rates out as a proven Super Bowl winning HC you'd be crazy to not hire him because he decided to throw in the towel in a totally meaningless game for his team at the time. And you as an organization are still mad because that loss cost you a playoff trip. That just sounds immature.

If you look at his candidacy and see legit concerns with him as a HC, ok that makes sense other than pointing to that meaningless game at the end of last season.

Daboll a lot and he appears to be the front runner. Quinn is coveted because he’s had success in three different organizations. He was the architect of the championship legion of boom defense that destroyed Peyton Manning in the super bowl and turned around a Cowboys defense. As a head coach he has a winning record and would have won the super bowl but for a couple of really bad breaks. He’s 51 - still young and got a lot of coaching ahead of him but a hell of a lot of experience already.
Would love Quinn or
Doubledeuce22 : 1/24/2022 8:51 pm : link
Daboll. Harbaugh seems like it’s not happening but would still prefer him to all others.
The idea of Quinn as HC appeals to me more each day
eric2425ny : 1/24/2022 9:35 pm : link
He’s a great defensive mind and he had a lot of success during his time in Atlanta.

His biggest mistake was hiring Sarkisian when Shanahan left for the 49ers. If he hired someone else he would probably still be the head coach in Atlanta.

The key with any coach we hire is that they get excellent assistants. Let’s look at our last two coaches as an example. Shurmur called a decent offense as HC, but his DC Bettcher was a complete bust. I shit on Graham a lot on here for his lousy 2 minute defense, but he has overall been a decent DC under Judge. On the other side of the ball Judge whiffed big time.

Point being, focus more on what the HC can bring in terms of OC’s and DC’s. Respected guys like Quinn are more likely to bring good coordinators than some first time head coach.
gotta say if you look at the history of 1st time head coaches the

last 3 years its not pretty.

Most of them are either fired already or on the hot seat.

with a new GM who will be learning NY and the job on the job, I think its best to get a veteran HC in here or at least a veteran OC.

I'll just reiterate that

"Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn is believed to be one of two finalists for the Denver Broncos' head coaching vacancy."
It's hard to know how much credit Quinn deserves...
Big Blue Blogger : 1/25/2022 3:11 am : link
... for the Legion of Boom. He inherited a top unit from Gus Bradley, and Wilson's rookie contract helped Seattle keep that group together for a few years. In that sense, Quinn resembles his Atlanta predecessor, Mike Smith, who owed his rapid ascent to association with defenses he didn't build.

As others have said, though, the ability to recruit a strong staff is huge. That's especially true for an organization like the Giants that has recently been a graveyard for coaching careers.

McDaniel would be fun to watch. Not saying he'll live up to the hype - a history degree from an elite college doesn't make him the offensive reincarnation of Bill Belichick, and our recent experience with Ivy League OCs isn't great. Maybe the bottle will get him in the end. But the interviews would be more coherent than Joe Judge's ramblings.

The Giants have announced all of their interviews exactly the same way. You're way off on this.
