Source: Giants requested an interview with Cowboys’ Joe Whitt Jr. for their defensive coordinator position. Whitt, 43, is Dallas’ defensive passing game coordinator/secondary coach. Worked under Dan Quinn in Atlanta (2020) & Dallas (2021). Quinn interviewed for NYG HC job today.
Whitt also worked with Giants DC Pat Graham (2018) — now a Giants head coaching candidate — and Giants LB Blake Martinez (2016-18) in Green Bay.
The Ravens and Seahawks already requested DC interviews with Whitt, as well.
Sounds like Mara is picking coaches again.

Sigh.
Giants did just interview Dan Quinn so maybe he suggested him idk
Why not DeMeco Ryans?

Ha ha, I don't think that is so. It is more likely Daboll is getting the job.
Why not DeMeco Ryans?
he's already a defensive coordinator so they can only request permission on him for a HC interview. his team is obviously still playing so it's possible they decide to do that once he's available.

No I would bet this is getting your place holder in... They have probably asked their potential HC about who they would want as a DC and Whitt has been in demand. Plus you have to get permission so I bet this is all it is. Depending who we hire we may not even interview him.

Didn’t realize this was for DC, duh.
But yea sounds like you’re right. Daboll seems to have HC locked up.

Or maybe Daboll has indicated interest? I am no Mara fan but the paranoia here has gotten insane.
Probably means Schoen is having a lot of say in this. A lot of BBI would prefer the HC to be the real CEO, and GM more like COO. This suggests that at least for now, Schoen is really in charge and the HC will be firmly under the GM.
I think it means Whitt was on Daboll's list, and possibly Quinn's list as well so they are reserving room on the dance card.
Yes without a doubt that could be the case. I don't think it's Mara though, it may be Quinn, Schoen or Daboll bringing up Whitt's name as a potential DC.

What prompts you to say that?

So there is connections to Whitt from the coaches that have been interviewed and your take is Mara is picking coaches again. Last week they were requesting head coaching interviews before they announced the general manager. Maybe, maybe and I know this might be hard to imagine, but one of the coaches they interviewed or maybe more than one suggested Whitt as a guy they would want as defensive coordinator.
If John Mara was picking coaches again, don't you think he would have requested the interview before he talked to other head coaching candidates. Dallas was eliminated from the playoffs last week

Very possible. I just find it curious given that neither Schoen or Daboll have any ties with Whitt to suggest they've crossed paths.

Yes, my thinking was maybe Whitt is known in the NFL as an upcoming potential DC and they wanted to get ahead of other teams or at least be given a chance. Just a guess.
It sure didn't take long for him to become the Mara's patsy...
@art_stapleton
Exactly. If they don't put in the request, there can't be any contact. It's pretty simple.
And it's not a stretch to think Daboll might like Whitt as someone to interview as DC, too.

Why not DeMeco Ryans?
Because he's already a DC?
The other half looks like they’re in no rush because they’ve yet to satisfy the Rooney Rule which is literally the only thing stopping them from hiring a head coach.
I’m wondering if Mara is high on Quinn and Schoen is purposely holding off bringing in someone that satisfies the Rooney Rule until after Mara cools off on Quinn a little bit…
Eric, weren’t you saying all year that Abrams would likely be promoted regardless of what happened?
This all might not work still, but given what a lot assumed, I think that is important context to add. Abrams is being pushed out it appears.

As implied in the other thread...sounds like Mara doesn't even care about complying with the Rooney Rule. Daboll is just going to get the job.
The Mara's are really something...
We don't even know if Abrams is out of the picture yet.
It also seems like Mara was looking for any excuse to keep Judge despite the fact he was melting down by season's end.
My point? The Maras are perfectly capable of screwing this up.

John is very tight with the competition committee and the Mara family is intermingled with the Rooney family who wrote the rule, they’re not hiring someone “officially” without satisfying this rule, which is why its odd that you haven’t seen them schedule and official interview with someone that satisfies it.
All we have so far is “Flores will interview sometime this week” which we can assume won’t be tomorrow because Daboll in and they also will give Graham a courtesy interview.
That said, I'm resigned to the fact he's the owner. All I can do is hope & pray that he's letting Schoen run the show. & I don't think Schoen leaves Buffalo without some 100% assurances that's the case.

I don’t disagree, but fortunately Mara/Tisch DID decide to wipe the slate clean. We’ll see.

Chris Mara is probably behind this whole thing...
