September 15, 2003 - when squibs go wrong...

pivo : 1/24/2022 6:17 pm
Lots of talk about squibbing or not squibbing lately.

When the Bills scored with 13 seconds left, I was busy going back and forth between the game and an good Australian Open match, so I switched back to the match, while in the back of my head I thought "nah, that can't happen again".

September 15 was a Giants-Cowboys Monday night game. You probably know the rest. I had totally forgotten that Parcells coached the Cowboys that night. Talk about a sour taste in your mouth...

I had the flu that week. That game didn't help.

That was such a brutal loss.

The Washington Redskins beat them, 30-27, on Mark Moseley's 48-yard field goal. Moseley had tied the score at 27-27 on a 49-yard field goal on the last play of regulation, a play made possible by the Giants' questionable decision to try a low, short kickoff.

Only 45 seconds before the field goal, the Giants had apparently turned defeat into victory on a 27-yard touchdown pass from Scott Brunner, Simms's successor, to John Mistler.

Have been a short kick out before the end zone.

Would’ve took 3-4 seconds off.
Fasell lost that game.....

The clock was running when he called TO with 11 seconds left. He could of let it run down to 3 seconds and kicked the FG as time ran out.

Or, at the very least, make Dallas use their last time out to stop the clock. Either would have won the game.
Good find, Jeff.

That one was buried in the "try to forget" area of my brain.

Of course we know, in the new "offense-rules" NFL passing league, 45 seconds is a lifetime...
Here's what I still don't understand
GruningsOnTheHill : 1/24/2022 6:34 pm : link
Assuming it's fielded cleanly, the receiver would take a knee as soon as he catches the squibbed kick; that would result in just 1 second coming off the clock. For some inexplicable reason I found myself pulling for the Bills, and now I'm pissed that they lost. How does a team with the best defense in the NFL kick off with the lead and :13 on the clock...and lose?

This game and the 2018 game against Philly were the most undeserved wins that an opponent had against the Giants. Ok and maybe the 1997 playoff game against the Vikings.

Gifts and nothing else.

Residual from the infamous playoff game at SF that previous January...fassel wanted to leave enough time in case of fuck up.
Yeah, brutal loss
gfinop : 1/24/2022 9:05 pm : link
indeed. Also, it was the start of JF exit from the Giants.

Sometimes brutal losses lead to good things.

We've gone through 10 years of total crap... I'm hoping for a 3-peat :-D

Exactly. Squibb kick isn’t even the call in that situation since the ball can be immediately downed with essentially no time coming off the clock and the receiving team could hypothetically do so with decent field position. You want to loft that sucker so it lands somewhere between the 5-10 yard line and force a return. Sucks for the bills

They should have fired the sorry-ass ST coach immediately. Some guy named Belichick.
