Random thoughts from a gray beard ...

Spider56 : 1/25/2022 10:59 am
Despite being viewed as a dysfunctional organization:
- no one was reported to have turned down an interview for either the GM or HC positions
- they filled their GM slot quickly with the guy viewed by many to have been the best available.
- the 2 most experienced HC candidates (Flores and Quinn) have local ties and have expressed interest in being the man. Both of these guys had issues in their first HC job, but they’ve shown they can win in the league and are smart enough to learn from previous mistakes. They should be better in their 2nd chance.
- Schoen is in good position to get the best available OC (Daboll) if the desire is mutual.

Re Daboll:
- an upstate guy who struggled in his first NYC gig with the jests. Will this be a factor + or - ?
- is Miami in play? He knows the AFC east and has history with Tua. Is this a + or - ?
- said to have a vg relationship with Schoen, but do we really know?

Future coordinators:
- lots of very good DC guys out there, please don’t retain Patrick Graham.
- to us amateurs, there appear to be fewer good OC guys available but a lot of today’s geniuses were unknown just a couple of years ago.

Rebuilding the team:
- the first, second and third priority is the OL
- lots of guys from the current roster need to go
- a great deal of prayer (and luck) is needed.

Net: lots of fun stuff going on to help get me through the winter.

The next couple of weeks should be very interesting

Hopefully, they will have their new new coaching staff in place and then can start focusing on free agency and the draft.
It's hard to ding Daboll for his tenure at NYJ.
Section331 : 1/25/2022 11:04 am : link
He was the QB coach who had an injured Chad Pennington, an awful Kellen Clemens and an old Brett Favre. You can't expect him to make a hot fudge sundae out of a pile of crap.

The job was highly sought because ownership agreed to step back. We don't know if there were conditions any of the candidates asked about before agreeing to an interview, but I would have to think top GM candidates asked about autonomy.
OL is priority
JonC : 1/25/2022 11:06 am : link
but they've got talent issues all over the roster, don't fall into the OL or bust trap.

I don't love the coach options, but I hope 1) Mara stays out of the way and 2) Schoen has the magic touch to hire the right HC. Or, at least not make a bad hire and get the team out of park.

Re the job with the Jets ... I was thinking more that he knows the pressure of coaching in NY first hand, the heat of the lights and the incessant media crunch with their often dopey questions. This might be attractive to some or a turnoff for others. Previously he’s been insulated ... now he’d be the guy.
This is where the fun begins for guys like Schoen and the like
GiantBlue : 1/25/2022 11:13 am : link
They want the very bottom so they can carpet bomb and rebuild.

This is what drives the DNA of a guy who wants to be GM in the NFL.....to remake the team in his image.

So while we are standing around waiting in the bread line of the NFL....these guys are rolling up their sleeves and ready to get to work.

I always like to document the moves new GM's make to see how the building is built...........

So....my message is "Let the fun begin!"
So far, it seems like the Giants hired a good gm and they're
Ira : 1/25/2022 11:18 am : link
interviewing good candidates to be head coach.
Good OP. Agree there is lots of good stuff
Jimmy Googs : 1/25/2022 11:18 am : link
to at least talk about over next few months and think about in terms of how this organization can properly rebuild itself on and off the field.

Hopefully this weak-ass theme that the Mara's will still get in the way dies off more and more. Yes, they don't get the benefit of the doubt but not sure why anymore needs to be said on it than that...
OL is a priority
Mike from Ohio : 1/25/2022 11:19 am : link
it is not priority one, two and three. I trust Schoen is smart enough to know you don't build a team one unit at a time and force picks to make that happen.

There isn't a spot on this team I can think of outside of kicker than can't use an immediate infusion of talent.
There is no reason for either the team or
Bill in UT : 1/25/2022 11:21 am : link
the candidate to announce that an interview request has been turned down. We'll likely never know
re: Mara's involvement
JonC : 1/25/2022 11:25 am : link
The proof is in the pudding, perspective will change when the recipe clearly changes. So far, it looks promising, now let's see Schoen hire his own HC and then shift attention to the scouting and pro personnel departments.

True ... but is there a top guy they didn’t interview that you thought they should ? The 9 guys for GM covered the spectrum and 5 so far for HC.

No, the search and interview processes have been adequately covered.

At least for the non-conspiracy theorists.

:-)
There’s 1 more thing I should have added ...
Spider56 : 1/25/2022 11:33 am : link
In other threads, people have mentioned trading for the rights to Sean Payton. Unless the price was ridiculous, this is an absolute no brainer. He’s only 58 and after 16 years in NO could probably use a change. Wow ... but this would be too much to hope for.
Why shouldn’t this team be
Simms11 : 1/25/2022 12:13 pm : link
a good place to be? The HC has nowhere to go but up and will most likely be a hero with even a 9-8 season. He also can mold the team to his liking, essentially starting over. Could be a tremendous opportunity and now with the right GM in place, hopefully, it could really set the HC up for success.
How exactly has Flores shown he learned from previous mistakes?
Matt M. : 1/25/2022 12:53 pm : link
His previous mistakes (poor communication, poor relations with coaches, obsession with Watson) all contributed to him JUST being fired. How and what did he learn? And how would you know?

You might want to go back and read what I wrote.
I agree with a lot of the OP
arniefez : 1/25/2022 1:42 pm : link
But I agree more with the people who mentioned that OL is only one of the Giants glaring issues. The DL/front 7 on defense is just as much of a priority IMO. Both units have just 1 above average player and 0 elite players.

The source for all of these are the Miami Dolphins, why do we take their word for it as if they have no reason to lie? I'll just unpack one of these points as pure, unadulterated bullshit:

So we are expected to believe that Flores stopped communicating with his assistants somewhere around midseason, yet the front office allowed this to continue for half a season without doing anything about it? Does that sound reasonable? That, to me, is grounds for immediate termination, and if assistants are willing to corroborate it, one where his contract would be voided. So, the FO is either lying, or horribly incompetent, there is no middle ground.

I don't doubt that Flores can be a prickly personality, but I'm certainly not going to cross him off the list because of that. Every charge should be vetted, but we should at least consider the possibility that the Dolphins are engaging in a little character assassination. They wouldn't be the first franchise to do it.
Coaches by definition are control freaks & can have prickly attitudes.
Spider56 : 1/25/2022 2:54 pm : link
The good ones mask their deficiencies and the great ones overcome them and develop capability to listen, evolve and improve. Maybe Flores has a little chip that developed on his way from the inner city to the inner sanctum. I don’t know ... But the man is only 40 and he can coach. He took a real turd in Miami and got it to be competitive very quickly. Someone is going to give him a 2nd shot and they will be rewarded.

If not HC, then I'd love to see him as DC.

Absolutely, sounds dubious at best, horsehit at worst.
