Good Crop of Free Agent OL

nyjuggernaut2 : 1/25/2022 1:16 pm
One of the Giants biggest needs this off-season is fixing the OL, and most of the talk has been using one or even both of the 1st round picks on an OL. However, there are a number of viable options that could be available in the open market come March. And although cap space is scarce, there's always the opportunity to make at least one big splash.

Here are the names of the top OL whose contracts expire at the end of the 2022 season:

OT
Tevon Armstead
Orlando Brown, Jr
Trent Brown
Morgan Moses
Duane Brown
Riley Reiff
Cam Robinson
Eric Fisher

OG
Brandon Scherff
Andrew Norwell
Laken Tomlinson
James Daniel
Austin Corbett
Conor Williams
Alex Cappa

C
Ryan Jensen
Brian Allen
Ben Jones
Bradley Bozeman

We have a LOT of dead weight we can cut
GiantsRage2007 : 1/25/2022 1:18 pm : link
We have so many guys making big $$ and producing squat...

Jettison them and sign OL
Should be interesting to see
Dnew15 : 1/25/2022 1:19 pm : link
how this all shakes out.

Between players signing extensions, franchised/transition tags, retirements we'll see who actually hits the open market.

AND...it will be interesting to see what the Giants can do to make room since they are pressed up against the cap pretty good.

One thing is for sure - the NYG have one (that's right ONE) offensive lineman scheduled to be on the roster right now for next year that anyone can feel good about.

That's crazy.
Sign one of these guys

to go with one of the OT and Linderbaum, team them up with Thomas…OL could be fixed in one offseason.
Agree
Jolly Blue Giant : 1/25/2022 1:24 pm : link
I’d rather eat a ton of dead cap and sign 2 good Olineman, and worry about the skill positions later.
Pass the BBI hat....

I'll pass on free agent offensive linemen
Hammer : 1/25/2022 1:28 pm : link
because the Giants have been burned using the free agency route for linemen so many times.

The need to find their players in the draft.

History has shown that free agency is not going to work.
I really hope they minimize FA spends
DavidinBMNY : 1/25/2022 1:35 pm : link
It literally has not worked. If you had one or two players to add to go to the next level then sure. But look at what they did last year. They spend ~$35 million or something on Golladay+Ross+Ruduloph+Jackson and they got WORSE!

I'd much rather they build with younger, healthier guys via the draft. If they drafted 3 Ol it wouldn't be enough from my perspective this year. I mean they have Thomas and what - Brederson and Lemiuex (hopefully?) Peart and Gates can't be counted on at all. I think Solder is a FA.
We need to sign an IOL
Dankbeerman : 1/25/2022 1:38 pm : link
or 2. Interested in how much Cappa would want, he would be my target for a resonable price.
I think a combination
SleepyOwl : 1/25/2022 1:39 pm : link
Of drafting, free agency and trade are all viable options to strengthening not just the oline but the team overall. What I noticed does NOT work is completely ignoring a position group and then scrambling to find last minute bottom of the barrel replacements once injuries hit. Thanks Dave.
Free Agent linemen can work
Scyber : 1/25/2022 1:43 pm : link
Let's not forget that 2/5 of the line in 2007 and 2008 were free agents. You just can't overpay for middling talent.
Need four legit NFL caliber starters on the OL
Since1965 : 1/25/2022 1:58 pm : link
since Gates' status is uncertain. Two vets and two draft picks would be a nice blend. This must be fixed once and for all. It is the top priority.
don't even bother
djm : 1/25/2022 1:59 pm : link
according to the expert number crunchers NYG cannot even afford to pay attention let alone dive into the FA market.

Until they do that is, then the talk goes away.
Getting Laken Tomlinson in here
Ben in Tampa : 1/25/2022 2:02 pm : link
would go a long way to rebuilding the line.

Two early OL draft picks at Tackle and Center

Thomas/Lemeuix/New C/Tomlinson/new T
Check out Nick Ford from Utah
shocktheworld : 1/25/2022 2:06 pm : link
He had literally played ever OL position for Utah, but center looks to be his best spot. He is a big strong kid, and could be had in the latter rounds…

If we take a center at #5 or 7… no matter how highly rated… is a huge mistake, you can find centers later in the draft or FA.

Now if we trade back and take Linderbaum mid round or so, I’m totally on board.
Would love to see the sign Robinson
Chocco : 1/25/2022 2:09 pm : link
If they don't have to overspend
Then you can use 1 first rounder and a second rounder on Guards.

Thomas/Rnd 1/Pio/Rnd 2/Robinson
Sign Bozeman to play center
Earl the goat : 1/25/2022 2:10 pm : link
And draft Kenyon Green and Ikem to play guard
I know that FA is a crapshoot.....but we took an approach on the BBI
GiantBlue : 1/25/2022 2:11 pm : link
that FA was crap after signing Jenkins, that DL from Cleveland , etc and the ensuing years were not any better.........

Let's just focus on keeping the right playings, signing the right players and drafting the right players.

Break the matrix.

If we make a mistake, admit it and draft/sign accordingly instead of sticking a blueprint that ultimately doesn't work.

If we draft a QB at 5 one year and Mahomes is available the next year....Draft HIM!

Connor Williams
Doubledeuce22 : 1/25/2022 2:29 pm : link
and Brad Bozeman would be great and shouldn't break the bank either. Draft a OL in the 1st round and this line would be going in the right direction.
Giants Free Agent Record
Samiam : 1/25/2022 2:29 pm : link
Have the Giants signed a free agent in the last 10 years who has performed as expected for more than 1 year and worth the money?

I don’t think so.
Before everyone goes into
Joe in CT : 1/25/2022 2:33 pm : link
a frenzied history revision let's not forget our new GM happens to go the extra mile in evaluating talent (whether it be draft or FAs). I trust that he will do his due diligence in finding at least two FAs who can play OG/OC as we will need a starter at both in addition to quality backups.

One of the first 3 picks in the draft should be a quality OT to man the right side. I am pretty sure JS will have a plan.
FA OC is the way to go i think
Festina Lente : 1/25/2022 2:57 pm : link
As has been mentioned by others previously it is a difficult position for a rookie and we need a savvy (and good) vet there to help the QB and line.

To me that thread shows the importance of good drafting over finding guys via free agency.

The Giants need to use multiple picks on the OL in the draft. And of course, it goes without saying they need to draft football players vs. guys with great 'measurables'

Let's just see who makes it to FA

.
We all know that we have no cap space,
BigBlueNH : 1/25/2022 6:05 pm : link
but we should create some and target 1, and only 1, premium FA on the OL. Right now, there is NO ONE on our roster making big $$ on the OL. And no one who will until we pick up the 5th year option on AT. We need to better allocate our cap resources among position groups.

With 1 premium FA and 2 top draft picks, we could possibly turn that unit around in 1 year.

Wasn't trying to link exactly to FA theme in the OP, just generally on addressing an OL rebuild. And actually the Chiefs had a nice hybrid approach of some rebuild on the OL via free agency, draft high and draft low, and trading.

Their goal actually wasn't getting better as they were good already on the OL (although they would take it). They mostly wanted to retool with a new set of players with younger bodies, less injury concerns, fold in some rookies and better allocate cap dollars within a solid starting 5.

and they succeeded...
We prob need to target an OT.
BigBlueNH : 1/25/2022 6:16 pm : link
AT is the only one we have who can expect to play next year.
Giants will be cutting their cap number
US1 Giants : 1/25/2022 6:18 pm : link
not adding more money to the roster.
If they don’t do 5&7 on OL,
Joe Beckwith : 1/25/2022 10:09 pm : link
my guess is they go OL and Er/LB, then OL in the 2nd if OL are flying of the board.
A OT and OG early, and another OL later.
They need to come away with at least 2 starting OL, and a ER or LB.
Just a guess.
They need to build a OL that will keep AT from wanting to test FA without having to tag him, or draft a versatile OL like, is it Cross?
A FA veteran Center would be great. Need a smart experienced guy there
plato : 1/25/2022 10:17 pm : link
making line calls, helping two guards of ? Ability to stop the inside rush. We should be able to fill RT from either draft or current roster. And we need depth from less expensive FA’s or mid-lower round draft choices.

But if we have money for a FA O lineman, spend it on one man at center, if any of the FA centers are good, I think one of them would make the most sense.
On the list, Bozeman stands out the most to me
adamg : 1/25/2022 10:35 pm : link
As potentially attainable and matching need. Solidifying center before the draft would allow us to target higher valued tackles and guards and not reach for Linderbaum.
Or as plato said
adamg : 1/25/2022 10:36 pm : link
Need to read some of these threads more thoroughly.
Ive been saying for a month
Snablats : 1/25/2022 10:50 pm : link
Sign a free agent center and another OL, and draft 2 OL that can start. No to Linderbaum

Lemieux isnt good. Now, he wasnt surrounded by anyone good but Thomas, and the coaching he received was clearly really bad. Also coming off his injury. You cant rely on Lemieux being a starter
I’d love jenson
eli4life : 1/26/2022 1:43 am : link
But he is gonna cost a lot not sure how they would do it though
Another OL to keep an eye on is Bills OL Ryan Bates
Jay on the Island : 1/26/2022 10:40 am : link
He is a restricted free agent but he was undrafted so if the Bills tender him at the lowest level he will not require draft compensation. Chances are the Bills will give him a 2nd round tender but Schoen knows him well. Bates played very well this season at guard but he can play all 5 spots but he is better at guard or center. The Bills have a lot of interior OL depth so they might try to save some money by tendering Bates at the lowest level.

If Daboll is hired as HC I expect them to try to sign a couple of Bills players.
