Sounds like you’d like to see Mara intervene and force more candidates. I’m sure all these GM candidates provided a short list at the time of the GM interviews.
so far. First round pick of Jaguars although his career never really materialized as a franchise QB. Wound up bouncing around a bit and won a Super Bowl with Steelers as a backup QB to Big Ben.
Later hired by Arians, who he knew from Pittsburgh, to be an assistant coach in Arizona and then followed him to Tampa to be his Offensive Coordinator there. Won a Super Bowl as a coach.
And now full circle to be the next Head Coach of his first pro team in Jacksonville. Lot of work to do there but wish him good luck and hopefully his success continues to turn that place around.
this is an excellent article from the Washington Post on Leftwich. He’s a DC guy, and the article was written prior to last Super Bowl. It starts with this story which (while maybe embellished) is like something out of the movies:
Quote:
The kid stood at one end of the H.D. Woodson High practice field with the rest of the JV football players. A stray football rolled toward him from the other end, where the varsity had gathered, so he picked it up and threw it back.
“Who threw that ball?” asked Bob Headen, the head coach at Woodson.
“Byron,” Headen remembers someone telling him.
“Tell him to do the same thing,” Headen said.
Byron Leftwich, a freshman wide receiver hopeful, rifled another laser beam. Headen waved him over and told Leftwich he liked how he threw. Leftwich wanted to play wideout, but Headen insisted he would become Woodson’s backup quarterback.
Bucs will get a third-round compensatory draft pick in this year’s draft and next. This rule is going to exclusively benefit good teams. Nobody hires coaches from bad teams
I had hoped that the Giants would interview Leftwich

I agree, I don't like the comp pick, it is bound to favor winning teams with bonus picks. Although Lions DC Aaron Glenn is expected to interview for the NO job, but I suspect he is a Rooney Rule interview (NO is allegedly hiring Dennis Allen).
Always liked him and he has been with Arians a long time to help prepare. Hopefully he can assemble a strong staff. I think they are also moving on from the GM after the draft.
Leftwich was going to be a stud QB in the NFL. I guess the slow delivery ultimately caught up with him at the NFL level. Wish him all the best as a HC. I loved him in that one bowl game when he was at Marshall and his linemen had to carry him to the line of scrimmage on the final drive.
and apparently the players love him for it - he will ask players during the season about the incentives for production goals and then try to work it into the gameplan to get everyone the most money their contracts allow.
It's interesting because the article stated many players had never before played for a coach like that, hence the love and loyalty for him, but there are very real cap implications if every offensive player is unlocking all their bonus payments.

They should - the scuttlebutt from all the leaks was that their GM was an even worse human being than Gettleman and Pettit.

I wonder how it works in Tampa where his QB was winning Superbowls before he even entered the league.
Why would we do that? Schoen likes to interview guys he already knows. 🤦♂️
