To suggest that Hawkins favorable opinion of McDaniel can only be a product of internet group think? How do people become so misguided and desperate to appear forward-thinking to believe that's a reasonable statement?

Magazines and newspapers used to have big "copy desks" with several levels of copy editors and fact-checkers in addition to content editors who'd oversee the story. In the Internet era, most websites have dispensed with the copy desk, so reporters are supposed to do their own fact checking. That's a bad idea who's time has come. Fact checking and reporting are somewhat in conflict; the fact checker is supposed to challenge the reporter. Also, the two roles require different temperaments. Reporters are more like creatives, often very right-brained. They want to break big stories, the faster the better. On the other hand, copy editors and fact checkers excel when they are meticulous and detail oriented. They're the ones saying "Whoa whoa whoa, let's make sure we really have that big story and everything's correct." Reporters often find fact checkers a pain in the ass.

On top of that, if it's "opinion" some places won't fact-check at all. Then it's all on the writer

So that's how a biracial coach is misidentified as "white."

The New Yorker is famous for its fact checking but I've seen mistakes in that magazine. No place is perfect.

Let me state this guy is only admired because he is white, without doing 5 minutes of work to realize that he is NOT white.

Let me use an assessment from someone about the subject, and then just openly admit I have no idea who the person making the assessment was or if they are knowledgeable.

No journalistic standards at all, just blind emotion.

Propping yourself up as an expert in any way on a subject and publishing something with the words, "I don't know who XXX is...." in it. This is not some rando dude on the internet. 5 seconds on his twitter page lets you know he is on-air NFL network talent. If that doesn't cause you to hit the pause button and figure out who he is before you discredit his football opinion, then you're a moron.

Probably not a good start if you're going to touch the 3rd rail of racial commentary. Nevermind the obvious mistake but if you're going to imply that somebody you are quote tweeting in an article is some sort of brainwashed Uncle Tom, maybe take 30 seconds on google to figure out how he may have arrived at that opinion.

It is a fairly low bar to expect somebody writing for a major sports blog to know who Andrew Hawkins is as well.

I used to really like Deadspin. It is now awful. This writer should be fired immediately. Andrew Hawkins not only was a solid NFL wide receiver but is an outstanding talking head. Then he gets the race wrong of the coach in mention? See ya guy. You're a fucking lazy joke of a writer.

All the Deadspin writers walked off the job to protest corporate telling them to stick to sports. They all left and went on to form Defector and Deadspin adopted a just sports rule. One month later it was back to all sorts of non-sports stuff but with terrible writers. What the hell happened?

deadspin has been terrible for years. it was the only gawker site I visited, but it's been crap for quite awhile. I don't know why they don't kill it

How is it that Deadspin did not take down the article after learning that McDaniel was biracial ?

The premise of the article is that he is "white" privileged and getting opportunities not because he is smart or capable but that he fits the corporate image.

The article loses its relevance and perhaps they should applaud the fact that he is a biracial and has accomplished what he has done in an A typical manner.

to have this kind of discussion on, but it's worth pointing out that "white privilege" doesn't necessarily require the person to racially identify as white - that person can just have the appearance of being white and have the same experience.

how white guys are privileged in one way or another, regardless of the situation. Just someone looking to make a name for themselves.

Doesn't seem like it will work, but they keep trying anyway.
