Tiki especially asked some key questions, below is the breakdown (several quotes just paraphrased)...
Tiki: Scouting department felt like it needed to be fixed or re-organized. Is this something that will be addressed?"
Schoen: I've been in those chairs of uncertainty. Good thing is a lot of them will be able to prove themselves from now till the draft. I'm trying to get a feel of their process and I'm going to implement the process I believe in.
I'm going to evaluate the staff, I had a good zoom with them the other day. They're excited, I told them exactly what I'm looking for from a character standpoint. I'm looking forward to having meetings with them in February.
The scouts are at All-Star games, we got free agency coming up. So trying to figure out the current process they have and anything that I wanted to tweak. To make sure I'm getting what I need. Just making sure the scouts know what's expected of them.
Tiki: You kept on using the word resources. That the Giants are going to give you all the resources. What exactly are those resources, is that staff, is that new technologies?
Schoen: New technologies is definitely one of them. Updating the draft room was one of them, we still have the magnets that they've probably had forever. Transforming the draft boards to digital. Trying to evolve and be progressive on everything we do. If the Strength staff or the Training staff thinks we need to upgrade facilities and we can prove how that going to help us win, we will get those resources. If it's staffing, to get the best assistant head coach or the best offensive coordinator, we will have the resources to get whatever we need and get that done.
Tiki: What kind of culture do you envision this Giants team to have?
Schoen: A lot of times when you're bringing players in, you miss out on the person, more than you miss out on the talent. As a group, the coaches will watch tapes of the college guys and free agents that we'll plan to bring in. The scouts will look at them, we'll watch them as a staff. To me, to develop that culture, you have to have the right guys in that locker room. To me, it's guys who are smart, they have versatility, they're tough and dependable. You can count on them not to jump off sides on 3rd and 1 or whatever the scenario might be when adversity strikes.
To me, those are the type of guys we're looking for to be smart, tough and do the right things. The more of those guys you get in the locker room, when adversity strikes and things go wrong. They can keep the ship going in the right direction. That's what we're going to look for. I'm not going to have a lot of tolerance for players that might have a checkered past or not doing the right thing. Just because we want to send a message to the locker room, that this will be what we're going to be about.
Tiki: What are some of the top attributes you're looking for in the next Head Coach.
Schoen: Some I would be able to work with. That we're aligned and have the same beliefs in putting a staff together. I believe putting a staff together is very important. I truly think, if you have a good staff, you can win 2-3 more games a year. Just based on scheme, having your team ready, game management. When the game is on the line, I truly believe a good staff will be able you allow you to do that. Leadership, being able to lead a team. Intelligence, not necessary X's and O's but emotional intelligence is also important to not ride the highs and lows but to steady the ship throughout the course of the season. Also to being open minded. Are you going to listen to Ronny Barnes and the guys downstairs. Are you going to listen to the strength coach, are you going to listen to the sports performance analyst when they tell you that we need to pull back when they keep pushing. Some of the issues in the past have been injuries and we need to do a deep dive in that. To make sure we do everything that we can, so that these players can put the right foot forward on Sundays.

Personally, not a fan of Tierney. He asked some silly questions about Schoen's paycheck, Sean Payton, other GMs in the NY market and not being too late for Schoen's kids to be Jets fans. Although I thought Tiki did an amazing job overall on his questions.

We lost 2-3 games in each of the last 2 years because of this, and that might be kind.

Yep and what I get from this response is that it puts Quinn much more in the running than Flores.
We can't have anymore blown time outs.
I laughed. Probably the same magnets when Tiki was on the board.
I've got to agree that they make a good tandem. I've been listening to them for a couple of weeks and I really like Tiki's takes on a lot of topics. They're a good listen and very nice addition to WFAN.
Agree that Tiki does a good job. When I have listened he is knowledgeable and balanced.
Thanks for posting.

How so? Didn't Flores get two to three more wins out of the Dolphins than he had any right to?
- developing culture
- emotional intelligence
I'm looking forward to watching this GM grow the team.

Was wondering the same. I also think there’s more to the communication story in Miami - it doesn’t all add up.
It's harder than it sounds, because you have to really listen to what the subject is saying while also keeping an eye on the clock, but it's not THAT hard.

a lot more great coaches haven't gotten along great with others than those that have. of course there needs to be civility and mutual respect. but someone who can win but may be a little more opinionated should be above someone who seems more harmonious but with a lesser track record.

I agree and although we tend to overanalyze these things, to me this means he wants to hire Daboll (someone he can work with) as opposed to a coach like Flores, who may be more qualified, but might not be someone who works well with management.
Schoen also gave a similar answer in his presser.

the first thing he says is that he's looking for a head coach who can work with him. i know he's not necessarily saying that's his #1 criteria but even still that's just not what should be at the top (imo). the correct answer should be that he is looking for a head coach who knows how to win. and exactly to his point about staff building, knows how important that is and has the relationships to deliver top notch coordinators/position coaches.

like you said we may be overanalyzing because when asked specifically what he was looking for a coach he did say leadership #1 and everything he listed off is pretty much par for the course (correctly).
but it does seem like he's perhaps a little myopic to the reality that a great staff starts with a great head coach - and a lot of great head coaches are by DNA strong of mind.
He was a nuisance, always bugging the top editors to put his stories on page 1 and denigrating the other reporters' stories. When I worked with him, he always filed late — so late that we had to contemplate whether he was going to file at all. Every year it was a big decision whether to keep him or let him go, because he was such a pain to work with. Not nasty, just a pain. (I like the guy a lot, actually.)
But we kept him for years and years because he was a terrific reporter and writer, he broke big stories, and his copy was beautiful once he finally got around to filing it. He was a star. Stars get away with being a pain.
If you had a star HC, and he was a pain to work with, you'd find a way to work with him You'd clean up his messes. You'd put up with the annoying meetings and phone calls. Because the results would be worth it.
LOL... I'm trying to get my son to sign up for a dating site. And I keep telling him to use milksteak, ghouls, and magnets on his profile.

Well how he stressed the importance of putting together a strong staff. Flores went through asst coaches like water. 4 OC's in 3 years. I think Quinn could be more consistent and reliable in that area.
He’s a good coach, I’m glad we are looking at him aggressively.
First thing I thought of too. That shit got a lot of miles for Rabbit Foot Dave.

Is he a FullOnRapist?
IMO, Dexter was NOT undisciplined. He honed an ability to block a lot of kicks at Clemson by getting off the line the split instant to ball moved. In that play he was clearly ahead of the rest of the DL and I think that's what the refs used to make the call. (film also supported this.)
Both he and JJ seemed to agree he was actually on side, but because it had high potential to draw a wrong call, Dex agreed his error was trying it at the wrong time.
Cool. Now just need to get the coaching staff to update:
There was an unauthorized book written about Wellington a few years after he passed. The Mara's refused to cooperate with it. If you read it you'll know why. I'm not sure how many of you know Fred Dryer is but he played for the Giants early in his career in the late 1960's before forcing a trade away from Wellington and the Giants over money. In the book he's quoted quite a bit about how old all of the equipment the Giants had to use in those days were. Stuff from the 1950's.
If you listen to the Tiki interview you'll hear him talk about what the Giants Stadium weight room was like early in his career. It is unbelievable to me the parallels from the Wellington years to his sons and the last 10 years of Giants football. Talk about the sins of the father being repeated.
He’s a good coach, I’m glad we are looking at him aggressively.
I wasn't saying that I have huge problems with Flores. I agree with you that he deserves his chance to tell his side of the story of what went on in Miami. I don't have a strong preference from the candidates. I just think that it was telling that Schoen went out of his way to stress the importance of putting together a strong staff, and judging from the turnover on his staff that could be problematic for Flores.

MAGNETS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! are you KIDDING.. this team is so technologically behind is pathetic.
I find myself asking to they have the correct recovery equipment in the training room? Are they using Cyro recovery? Air Compression recovery? or are we just sticking people in tubs with a bags of ice from the corner store?
Are our " computer guys " actual people with a background in analytics or is it one of the Mara Nephews with a Dell Laptop and WIndows 98 Excel spreadsheet?
Do we have an IT department that updates and protects databases or is John Mara still using his Rolodex and file box with index cards?
Seriously and Schoen was actually kinda holding back a smile when talking about it too.
