You have to see this through with DJ. Can’t hurt the team at all by picking it up. Give him a line, a system that flows with the playmakers, and everyone just needs to stay healthy.
that it’s not picked up, he’ll have his $8 mil prove it year to the new regime with possible competition from outside (poss. the draft) and they’ll decide whether or not to give him a long term contract or let him walk after 2022
I could be wrong but I believe they can even wait until the end of the 2022 season and tag him if Jones somehow has a good enough season to warrant a 2nd contract.

I don't understand why we would. What obligation do they have to "see thus through"? He hasn't performed and he's missed games every season. This is a losing attitude.
If picked up it would be over $20M (fully guaranteed), without playing a snap off of his next injury and without the new system
If he plays out the season and we tag him, it would be around $28-$29, if I’m not mistaken.
The perfect scenario would have to play out to franchise him, which is highly unlikely. You let him play out the season and if you believe he’s the guy, try to get a deal done, without the option or tag being applied. Chances are, we’ll move on, he’ll walk and collect a pick the following year
But if they do it’s only guaranteed due to injury correct? If so the giants can still release him after next season if they wanted without incurring a dead cap hit.

Based on Mara’s comments, I believe the Giants will, and Schwartz will get the scoop the Giants feel 2/30M for a developing QB like Jones is a smart move.
and there's no advantage too doing so. The only way it can "backfire" is if Jones has an other worldly season to put him in that elite category of QB's you pay a fortune for. If he has a good season and you like what you see, an extension wouldn't be a back breaking contract. Or you tag him.
There's only downside in picking up the option, its what $21m or something like that? That's what a premier LT makes per year.
in hell. Let him play out next season. If a miracle happens and it looks like he's the guy, offer a new contract. If you're offering market price, no reason for him to move on. If he's a smart guy, he knows he's sucked the last 3 years and the Giants are doing the right thing
You can't commit to $20M for him in 2023, particularly coming off an injury that could guarantee that $. If the new regime decides he's not the guy and he gets injured, you're stuck with him at $20M.
I think they will give Jones every chance to start and succeed this year. (That is, in part, due to the lack of a clear top QB in this draft and no cap space). At the end of the year, they will either let him walk (if not the guy) or sign him to an extension (If he is the guy). I'd be shocked if it plays out any other way.

Agree 100% I still think he can be the guy, but an extension does not make sense. Don't want to waste any capital on a franchise qb this year. A better backup for sure.
Everyone knows we need to be strong up front. 1 year at $10M is not a huge commitment and we will have cap space in 2023. He has been healthy and reliable, if not a star.
If he is gone in 2023, we'll need to replace him with a very high draft pick or expensive FA. I don't see a replacement on the roster now.
or not on DJ to ‘23 until at least 1/2 the ‘22 season is under his belt, and presuming the OL has started to somewhat jell, to see what he can do in the new and presumably better O and a better OL.
They’ll say negotiations are ongoing with his people and decide after the season.
I say that based on the fact that it jumped from $25.1M to $29.7M from '21 to '22.
I don't really want the $21.3M option picked up, but the FT is not going to be an easy solution. A lot of money that has to be taken as a full cap hit.
If the option is not in place and DJ has any kind of a positive season in 2022, there will be a strong dynamic to give him an extension where the cap hit can be massaged.
The fifth year is only guaranteed for injury. The Giants could pick up the option and still cut him after next season and owe him nothing. Picking up the option buys the team time. Only risk is he gets hurt and can't play in 2023. Picking up the option is the correct thing to do. Even if you are going to move on after next season.

That is incorrect. You're describing the old rule. Picking up the option now fully guarantees the 5th year salary, injury or not.

This. Like Phil Simms in 1984.
There is just no way you possibly can commit to DJ
Yes.
Absolutely no reason to do it now.

There are many tools in the tool kit to extend him after this year if they want to.
Well done, Dave.
I’m convinced he will play better and stay healthier because of that fact alone.
Call it a true investment of confidence.
Yup,that about covers it
That’s what I Iamented Simms’ first four years. Talk about frustration..😎

No way.
We should be unloading players, not committing to them.

Pat Traina just said on the Entertainah pod that was here take as well.
