I would like to see him stay and still have hopes that one year removed injury he can come back strong. But no way am I or would I want the Giants to count on him. He is a lottery ticket at this point.
It's really several questions, with two versions of each:
If the Giants are switching to a 4-3, what if Lorenzo Carter leaves? How should they replace him? Should they draft David Ojabo?
If the Giants are staying with a 3-4, what if Lorenzo Carter leaves? How should the Giants replace him? Should they draft David Ojabo?
My half-informed 2-cents worth:
If they are going to the 4-3, George Karlaftis is a very attractive option. There are other Edge rushers who are also good candidates to play 4-3 DE. I don't know enough about Ojabo to know if he'd be a 4-3 LB. Carter might be a 3-4 OLB, I dunno. I wouldn't break the bank to keep him. He's a nice player and might blow up somewhere else, but the Giants have cap issues and letting him go might help with that.
If they are sticking with the 3-4, almost any Edge in the draft would be a help, whether he'll play 3-4 DE, 3-4 OLB, or something more like a 4-3 DE in a hybrid front. Are there any of the top Edge prospects who wouldn't help? Ojulari is very promising, Carter is still improving, but neither of them is going to keep Thibodeaux or Hutchinson on the bench.
Four years and what? He’s been completely average and at times not even that. Even cheap he’ll cost more than Roche or Ojulari. Time to move on I think.
Carter will move on as he will get offers for over league minimum, which is all the Giants can afford for a player of his caliber.
Ojabo is a project and will not be "ready" to play next year, but this is a total rebuild and the Giants should be getting talent, even if it takes time to develop. Not sure he is worth a 1st round pick, but he is likely worth a 2nd rounder.
We also do not know what defense they will be playing yet, but should know in the next two weeks. So he may not be a fit in the new scheme.
They are way more fun to watch when they do have one. This secondary led defense is the opposite of entertaining. I sure hope they go for a dominant defensive player in rd 1. a LB who can rush is fine.
He’d be on a cheap prove it deal after the Achilles injury. If he has a bad year next year, that’s it. They need some veterans on the team.
Problem is some team with a lot of cap room with overpay him on his promise and late season production. Giants will need to be judicious with any signing.
to form a full opinion, but the brief impression that I do have from watching a few of his games and some highlight videos is that he benefitted a lot from Hutchinson not only commanding a lot of blocking attention, but forcing QBs up in the pocket (and slightly to Ojabo's side).
I feel like some of his production is just cleaning up from the disruption caused by Hutch.
there's little reason to keep Carter, as he would need to play DE and he's not very good or stout versus the run.
Even if they stay with the 3-4 base, he's demonstrated enough to say you really can't count on him to be more than average, and the Giants are going to be faced with making the right decisions due to the cap situation.

Agreed; one would have thought Gettleman would have known this.
so whether Lorenzo Carter stays or goes, the team will still draft at least on EDGE player?
The Giants definitely need some EDGE help, regardless of staying with a 3-4 (rushbackers) or changing to a 4-3 (defensive ends). Especially whenever they're in their 4-2 nickel defense because the 3-4 OLBs they have (including Carter) are getting taken out of the play.

Well said, JonC. Said it better than I could have.

As for Carter leaving, see above.
Doubt it, but…..

Gettleman built such a weird, dysfunctional roster. premium resource DBs riding the pine while having bad OLine & zero pass rush.
You dont win championships by having a bunch of good DBs. Especially in tge Northeast.

He was coming of an achilles injury and came on late in the year. I think he may have more bidders than you realize.
