So I wouldnt be too disappointed if the Rangers go out. Making the playoffs and having this huge turnaround and fun season would be a good steppingstone
And we dont yet know what Drury will do with the trade deadline
Let's not be stupid here, this is the first time the Rangers lost a game in regulation to a non-playoff team all season. There are flaws on this team, but I'm not going to point to this game as "this is why they aren't getting out of the first round". Want to point to the Carolina game or the games against Calgary or Vegas this year, fine. This game was a bad loss on a night where they outshot their opponent almost 2:1 and got a lot of bad luck, including 4 posts, Fox getting hurt, and a bogus goal being allowed on a clear kicking motion.
Rangers' defensive structure and decision making was piss poor in the second period. On the third Columbus goal, all 3 forwards got caught up at the blue line, leaving an odd man rush down low. Also, Georgiev's nice run of games came to a halt in Carolina, and came crashing down last night. Guy just doesn't have it. I've also seen enough of Gauthier. A couple positives though to me were Schneider does not look like a rookie in his 7th NHL game, I think we may have a stud in him. Goodrow is showing why Drury gave him the money he did. Say what you want about the dollar amount and term, but Goodrow is going to be a huge difference maker come May (and June?)

You are setting the bar way too low, 5v5 stats are often overrated as an indicator. why? because game situation (who is ahead, by how much, and when) often dictates more than even strength or not.
Rangers have all the elements to succeed in the playoffs. Scoring, goaltending, strong special teams, team D, tenacity/grit.
just need a couple strategic adds and they should be in the thick of things.

Thank you! I've never seen a team this successful scrutinized this much by their own fan base! Obviously we'd like to see better 5 on 5 play, but other teams have been very successful in the playoffs with similar numbers. Caps in '18 won the Cup and they were in the bottom third of the league in 5 on 5 metrics, Blackhawks in '15 were middle of the pack. There is definitely room for improvement, and I think the deadline will be active for the Rangers to do so.
but those happen over the course of an 82-game season. Heck, the Pens lost to the Kraken in Pittsburgh last night. Declaring the team is doomed come playoff time because of this game is a bit premature, I think.
Basically minor league guys who stay with the NHL team for quick call-ups in case of the team being shorthanded. They're not technically on the roster, but if you need them, you don't have to get them from wherever the AHL team is to wherever you are. With COVID, it helps avoid postponements to have quick access to extra guys.

Almost a goal per game difference between them. Playing behind the same D.
Georgiev won't be playing in the playoffs. The probable Vezina winner will.

Agreed, but the Rangers 5 on 5 play is not going to advance them...
And we dont yet know what Drury will do with the trade deadline
