A few things I like about Joe Schoen

81_Great_Dane : 1/28/2022 12:15 am
1) He's boring. As in, not colorful. Gettleman and Accorsi were colorful. That's great if the team is winning. When the team stinks, it doesn't work at all. Schoen doesn't tell me old war stories or deflect with "hog mollies." He's more businesslike.

2) He's direct. He doesn't talk like everything is a state secret, nor does he insult our intelligence. He doesn't piss on our leg and tell us it's raining. Reese was so guarded that I can hardly remember anything he ever said. ("The JPP of tight ends" might be his most memorable quote.) He seemed to view the press as the enemy. Gettleman barely talked, and when he did, what he said was a lot of BS.

3) He seems to actually care about the Giants. Bavaro fan, Parcells protege. Not a requirement but a plus.

4) He seems to be asking the right questions, like "Why is this team always injured?" Not just asking; demanding answers.

5) He's tech-forward. Even Gettleman knew the Giants were behind the times. Schoen has used the up-to-date solutions, the analytics, the digital draft tools. Gettleman may have started the process of introducing analytics but it seemed pretty clear that he doesn't personally connect with them. Schoen is used to using them and will insist on getting the operation up-to-date.

Maybe he'll face-plant but I like what I'm seeing so far.
I concur, but like you say, he's milquetoast

I doubt his first HC works out. I'd bet he hangs onto the job long enough to get a second HC with his own QB and then does something. I think he'll be here awhile, and I don't think there is any rapid turn around, more a slow process.
Hopefully, he will analyze what worked and what didn't work

for the past few GMs and we will see a distinct difference in how Schoen manages in general.
That's the hope.

Myself I'm thinking he is simply more polished and squared away than actually brilliant, but we'll see.
That thing some poster said about

him coming off like every McKinsey hire he ever met is stuck in my head.

Wow, how do you even come to this conclusion? Some of you crack me up in your observations and then expectations and projections. Schoen did a nice job on GMFB , was personable and charismatic, knows what he is doing, what he wants to do and isn't coming off as an egotistical bully or narsisist. I think he needs more than 5 days to be judged and at least hire a HC before we proclaim the first one a failure...
He’s direct with the press now

Because he’s naive. Wait until the NY media takes something he says out of context and makes a huge distracting story about it. He will eventually end up giving nondescript vague answers.
If he gets the first 2 picks in the draft right
Rudy5757 : 1/28/2022 9:05 am : link
this year he will set the team up for success going forward. You can even count the 2nd round pick as a cant miss guy. If any of the picks fail it will be hard to overcome that imo. I dont care about public persona, I care about winning. If after 2 seasons we are still in the 5-6 win area his seat will be very hot nut at least we will have a digital draft board.

He is everything you say today but the proof will be in the moves he makes in the next 3 months. He has a small FA budget and nine picks to change this team into a winner. The draft this season is so important. 3 quality Starters at minimum plus 2 significant contributors and this team can turn it around pretty quick.
Biggest thing for me about Schoen

Is his scouting and personnel evaluation experience. I believe within the next 12 months he is going to restructure the scouting dept to his liking. Long overdue.
He comes across as being a very intelligent guy
Simms11 : 1/28/2022 10:34 am : link
and a guy that wants to do well here. I could care less about his personality, as long as he can do the job and get us back to the promised land, then who cares how he interviews!

That's my hope as well. I'm not very educated about analytics or how they are applied by NFL front offices and coaching staffs, but I have to think they'd assess as many Daniel Jones snaps as possible to help determine how likely he is to be capable of executing the essentials of Daboll's offense.

I think he has more personality when he's in a less formal interview than a press conference. My experience with McKinsey types is that they're boring 24/7.
I think it’s proven

That the way to survive in New York is to be as boring as fucking possible. Say nothing but cliches if necessary. Sure ppl will go after them for that but it’s still better that having your own words thrown I. Your face nonstop.

I think he is a less is more type speaker. Hope he leans into it
