Just started streaming this a while back and just got through season 1. I was not interested when it came out but some very positive buzz got me to give it a shot and I am glad I did.

Question for those who have been watching it. I get the premise of making the characters much more 3 dimensional than the movie treatment. But I can't stand Daniel's character. Is this the reaction other people are having too (at least to this point in the series) or am I just jaded?
No, it's how the series is written

Daniel's supposed to come off as kind of an asshole in the series
How far into it are you?

Just got through season 1.

It did seem at first they were making Johnny more likable and Daniel more a privileged a-hole. But as the season went along and he trained Robby and opened his own dojo it seemed like I was supposed to start thinking he was the same guy as in the movie, but all I kept thinking was "man does he need a good ass kicking."
Daniel is a pussy.
robbieballs2003 : 1/28/2022 10:21 am : link
Johnny Lawrence, baby!
they were so interested in rehabilitating Johnny Lawrence
Shirk130 : 1/28/2022 10:21 am : link
that they forgot who Daniel was. I really enjoyed the first two seasons but couldn't get past the first episode of the new season. Seems they've run out of ideas and guest stars the audience would care about.
The show is awful

Plot lines, acting, characters.. all bad.

But I can't stop watching it.
one of the best shows

He gets better

I think the series tries to show the pros and cons of almost all the characters. I think the first season they went a little overboard with Daniel negativity, probably because they had to prop Johnny up more but still keep them rivals. There is less need to prop up Johnny later in the series. IMO they corrected that in season 2 and 3

I do agree the acting is pretty suspect outside of Johnny. There is a reason Ralph disappeared for decades aside from his role in My Cousin Vinny.

Agreed! Nearly every single conflict in the show could be resolved with one decent conversation. That said, my daughter and I love it.
the writing is on purpose, thought that was obvious
UConn4523 : 1/28/2022 10:34 am : link
they are just modernizing your typical 80's movie. Its brilliant IMO. That said I haven't gotten to the most recent season yet.
The cheesiness, melodrama, bad acting, its all in on purpose.
penkap75 : 1/28/2022 10:34 am : link
I like how they have Daniel's wife be the rational meta character to remind everyone how cheesy this whole Karate drama is.

And that is what makes the show interesting. If it just carried on the story from the movie (which is what I assumed when I first saw there was a series) it would be a waste of time. The occasional quips about the whole premise of the show being somewhat silly is great.

To me, the first few episodes seemed to go out of the way to make Daniel an a-hole, but the last few seemed to me to be an effort to try and bring that back a bit but it didn't work for me, so curious what others thought.
very entertaining

and not meant to be taken seriously - but damn those fight scenes (involving children!) get pretty violent at times.
I think Daniel character grows
njurygiants : 1/28/2022 11:12 am : link
But I am glad they made him real, and show flaws and made all the characters have positives and flaws.

I really like the struggle Daniel has in trying to be the next Mr. Miagi and the relationships he builds with some of the students.

I hate the evolution of his kids, and how they made both he and his wife such bad parents.
also in season 3
UConn4523 : 1/28/2022 11:13 am : link
they hit an arc that's the best in the entire series, IMO. You'll know it when you get there. So well done.
Go in with low expectations and ride the nostalgia train
Jim in Forest Hills : 1/28/2022 11:16 am : link
its fun. Johnny is a fun character.

To me the "action scenes" are just laughably bad. It really is like an 80's show.
Last season
RicFlair : 1/28/2022 11:17 am : link
Last season the show fell off hard. What made the show good was that it didn’t take itself serious. It felt like they lost that and it was no longer enjoyable.

People that grew up with the Karate kid movies stick with it for the nostalgia. Younger people actually like it. I think it's so corny that it's funny and love the nostalgia.
As others have said it's terrible but you can't look away
oghwga : 1/28/2022 12:09 pm : link
But it seems like it's a kids show that then throws in some very adult humor. More so in the earlier seasons.
The show...
Brown_Hornet : 1/28/2022 12:11 pm : link
... Is poorly written.
The acting is bad.
It is campy and as cheesy as it can possibly be.

We haven't missed a single episode😉
since you have seen season 1

it's not a spoiler, but despite any negativity about the cinematography, plots or acting, or snobby details, what the show has done is nothing short of miraculous.

they took 80's post-boy epitome of the bully douche bag Johnny Lawrence/Greg Tolan/Chaz Osbourne/Jack (European Vacation) and made him into a sympathetic character.

It's pure cheese but it's so much fun
Greg from LI : 1/28/2022 12:28 pm : link
.
Also, Tori is scorchingly hot
Greg from LI : 1/28/2022 12:30 pm : link
And though her character is a high school student, I looked it up and the actress is in her 20s so I can say that without feeling like a creep 😂

That is what I like most about the show - the fact that they are giving these 2 dimensional stereotype characters dimension. I loved the scene where Johnny is telling the story about what happened with Alli to Miguel from his own perspective.

That was why I asked the question. Johnny has become a deeper character. To me, Daniel felt like he went from 2 dimensional good guy in the movie to 2 dimensional bad guy in the series.
In part, I imagine that's from how the series started
Greg from LI : 1/28/2022 12:46 pm : link
If I'm not mistaken, the idea for the show was inspired by the YouTube video that made the argument that Daniel was actually the villain of the movie - it was basically the same version of the story that Johnny tells Miguel in season one.

they stole that theory (intentionally or inadvertently) from Barney Stinson on How I met your mother. Put more effort into it, but it wasn't an original theory (AFAIK)

That actually stemmed from the show "How I Met Your Mother" Barnie (Neil Patrick Harris) always talked about it.
