LB Darrian Beavers

Angel Eyes : 1/28/2022 10:20 am
As a replacement for Lorenzo Carter as a SAM linebacker whether or not the Giants convert to a 4-3 or stay with a 3-4, would Cincinnati linebacker Darrian Beavers be a good option in the 3rd or 4th round? He looks like a smart player who's a real good tackler, holds up well against the run. In the passing game he has decent ball skills playing zone in the passing game but could use work in man coverage.

a very diverse player, I would love for the Giants have a shot at him
I like him a lot.

I think he is scheme flexible, which seems to be a trait Schoen says he looks for in his draft picks, as opposed to picking players for what the coaches do. I think we get a OLB or DE earlier and they then prioritize the MLB spot in rounds 3-5 with additional line depth.

Isn’t “scheme flexible” the same as being “multiple” ? Haven’t we had enough of drafting lesser talents just because then can be mediocre at more than one position?

Scheme flexible means you have skills that can translate what you are asked to do in your position in multiple looks. OLB- Hand in dirt or stand up. Run and Cover, bend around the edge and pressure the QB, Defend the run. Versus a pure 4-3 DE specializing in pass rush, has little coverage skill etc. can play run.Sam LB in 4/3 typically can't stand in at DE with a hand in the dirt because of their size or lack of power. Those extra traits make them scheme flexible to a 4-3 or 3-4.
I think it is time to end this worry about scheme fit

A linebacker that is scheme diverse is important if he is an outside linebacker. Look at Ojulari. The kid had a great rookie season and played with his hand in the dirt about 80% of the time, the other times he was in a 2 point stance and either rushed or dropped. Based on his size of 6’2” 250 he seems like he is too light to be a traditional 4-3 DE but go and look at Osi. He was about the same size. Opposite Osi was either Strahan or Tuck. Strahans last year he weighed 255 lbs. and he was excellent, Tuck played around 270, and moved inside on 3rd downs. Kiwi played both DE and OLB.

It’s about drafting the right guys I play outside regardless of the defense.

If Beavers can play inside LB in a 4-2 or Edge in a 4-2 then he is scheme diverse and a likely target in round 3.

We all need to keep in mind guys like LT and Carson were Defensive linemen in college. They were used differently when they came to the NFL.

The 4-2-5 defense is the modern day NFL base defensive allignment.
In theory I like flexibility

but has to be with the right staff, coaches like Graham and Mcadoo are the epitome of inflexible.

NE does it especially with their LBs, who are all big lummoxy 3-4 LOLB on paper but are versatile enough to play any of the LB positions. They kind of get exposed by a their kryptonite Josh Allen, a versatile athletic enough QB who can make offscript plays or plays in the pocket.

Somewhat ironic with someone like Graham, who extolled versatility but was never really able to apply it.
He would be

a fascinating addition.

Starve a cold,
Feed a fever,
I'll come over and eat your Beavers.

Keep an eye on Troy Andersen Montana State ando JoJo Domann from Nebraska.
They could be potential 3rd round draft picks.
Yeah, but does he have...

For a bit later round LB pick look at Micah McFadden - Indiana

First team Big ten 2020, 2nd team 2021. Really smart inside guy. Good mobility. 5th/6th round. Saw a lot of Indiana last two years and he can play.
