Trevor Penning at 5???

bigblue12 : 3/7/2022 1:10 pm
There’s a new article in the Athletic which has a current GM predict the top ten. The GM ultimately picked Ekwonu at 5, but said that it would be a toss up between Ekwonu/Penning and stated that Penning does not get past 6. I thought that was interesting
I love Penning
Rjanyg : 3/7/2022 1:16 pm : link
nasty player. He would be a viable option and we could still get a pass rusher at 7. I guess it depends on how the top 4 go.

Yes, 7 for me. I'd consider taking him even if Okwonu goes at 5. Let Okwonu play LG and Penning RT.
Can Penning control himself on the field?
Amtoft : 3/7/2022 1:35 pm : link
Doesn't seem like a Giants type of player. The penalties will get him crushed on this team.

The absurd amount of penalties against lesser competition
90.Cal : 3/7/2022 1:39 pm : link
Is concerning but outside of that, he's one of the nastiest OL I've ever seen as far as finishing guys goes, I don't see a bunch of trade back options being available to us but he's on the short list of guys I'd want in a trade back but if they take him at 5 or 7 so be it. I've warmed up to both him and Travon Walker over the past few weeks.
If there are 2 OTs the Giants like at 5
Rudy5757 : 3/7/2022 1:40 pm : link
I think they go for a position player at 5 then get 1 of the 2 OTs at 7. I dont believe Penning is a top 10 guy in most drafts but this one has a lot of guys will similar grades so he might be in that mix.

For a player who gets penalized as much as he does. Dude is nasty but his technique is sloppy as hell and he grabs way too much. I wouldn’t touch him until the late teens
I think that is too early
Mark from Jersey : 3/7/2022 1:57 pm : link
for a guy that played at a lower level of competition. Also my untrained eye doesn't like how wide he keeps his feet. I would think that would be a problem at the next level regardless if on the left or right. I can see balance as a potential issue.

Reminds of when the Chiefs took Eric Fisher #1 overall and he was a kid from Central Michigan. It happens. Penning has had excellent grades from everywhere I've seen and I'm sure he's capable of taking over RT. Something most are unsure a guy like Cross can do.

16! so it wasn't like he has a bunch and was getting better at not getting penalties. That number is huge and he holds a lot.

A few clips he basically gets away with holds too. In one, a guy took the edge on him and TP basically tackled him. Wonder how many of those he had.

Who are two reaches I hope the Giants don't make?

Give me Icky/Neal or bust in round 1 without a trade down. So many good RT, OG, and Centers in rounds two and three. Cross is a LT and Penning is a penalty machine drive killer.

Bill in UT : 3/7/2022 2:59 pm : link
but for those who are, I noticed that Penning probably scored well on more things than any other tackle. On a practical level, if most of his penalties are holds and/or personal fouls, unless the Giants O really turns around, each of those penalties kills a drive. I don't think we can afford that.

I highly doubt we take 2 OTs at 5 and 7
Rudy5757 : 3/7/2022 4:13 pm : link
If we are going to take 2 OL I prefer that we take Linderbaum at 7 instead of another OT. I dont think either scenario will happen. I think it will be a position player and OT.

I expect the OL to look something like this

Thomas - Lemieux - Linderbaum or FA - Draft Pick - Draft Pick (5 or 7)

Makes no sense to draft 2 OTs in the 1st to play one out of position. We have Thomas for 3 more years, there is no place for a 3rd OT unless you think they will be a better guard. Guards can be had later in the draft.

although at 5 it seems the Giants would have better choices.

Probably at 7 too but who knows how things fall and what opportunities they may have to consider if any offer to move down a bit comes their way.

I don't think that's what I said. From accounts I have read Penning can play guard - well. So he starts at guard.

We also have a LT who is coming off his second ankle surgery. He's going to miss some time. When he's out, we don't miss a beat.

But if our scouting says he's not a good guard, then no, you don't do it. I'm just spit-balling. I'm not dying on this hill.

Increasingly, it looks like the Giants might draft two defenders at 5 and 7. I don't prefer it. The offense is a five alarm fire. I think both picks need to go to the offense. Especially since defense is increasingly marginalized in today's NFL. Offensive players are just more valuable in today's game.

Defenses are marginalized?
GNewGiants : 3/7/2022 7:09 pm : link
Interesting… I saw TB defense dominate KC in the super bowl two years ago. I also saw Rams defense manhandle the bengals in the SB. And Cincy got to the SB with a great defensive effort in 3 games leading up to the Super Bowl. Also, I think SF was a win away with some dominating defensive play in the playoffs with a shit QB.

You know that narrative of speaking out of your ass? Someone sure “produces” enough of it.

Plus the Giants lost some games this year because their defense couldn't make a stop before the opposing team was in range.

He’s a head case who had 16 penalties this season. There’s no reason to drive a man into the ground after he’s been knocked down and is 10 yards behind the play.

Actually I used the biggest games of the year to prove my point. You must not have watched them because you were too busy posting nonsense that no one cares about. Defenses are so marginalized that we are talking about 4-5 DEs, 2-3 corners, 2 ILB, and a safety as all potential top 10 picks. Haha.

You think 2 ILBs get drafted in the top 10?. 3 corners? Maybe by the end of the first round.

And I didn't run from anything. You just alerted me to it. BFD, i contradicted a comment I made a year ago, about a player we signed who was injured, who will be a trivia question in 5 years. That's what makes you happy? That's what kind od argument you make? Lame.

When more points are scored on a per game basis across the entire league, defense is devalued. It is a better use of high draft picks to invest high picks in offense, than defense. Google: is offense more valuable than defense in the NFL, for more data.

Isn’t your forte. I said those players are being talked about being drafted top 10. And I was merely using an example of you talking out of your ass and being called out on it. Conveniently you leave a topic when exposed - haha.

And defenses aren’t being marginalized whatsoever. You can say Google it 10 more times but it still makes you look foolish. Defense is more important now than ever and as by evidence of the biggest game of the year… defense still carries more weight.

Google it
Want to help our defense?
Producer : 3/8/2022 6:10 am : link
Help our offense first.

When an offense is anemic, like ours, and when an offense goes three and out all the time and doesn't score TDs, like ours, it doesn't matter what kind of defense we have. We might have a very good defense already, and we wouldn't know. Our guys are gassed and on the field too much and defending a short field.

We need to improve the offense first and foremost. That will be a huge benefit to the D.
