NFT: How to trap/kill a crafty rat in my garage?

Grey Pilgrim : 3/29/2022 2:31 pm
I bought a smallish trap that has not worked. Maybe the rat is too big for it?

Haven't seen him, but I can hear him scurrying around.

He basically tore through my Pantry in the Garage, leaving not much behind.

He's eating the bread that i placed outside the trap, but not inside.

What should I do? Is poison the way to go?

TIA

I think many predators
pjcas18 : 4/1/2022 4:16 pm : link
will eat dead rodents.

I know I commented on this in a post, but I used to throw all the dead chipmunks (and opossums from my pool, and rabbit carcasses from my dog, etc.) over the fence to my neighbors yard.

I went back there to take inventory and there was not one decomposing animal to be found.

I think the hawks eat them, maybe the foxes too.

Yeah I'm sure you are right, and crows. I have two gigantic Barred Owls that live near where I let them go, so I guess I'm always rooting for the night predators because I figure they would miss out on day scavenging.
And LOL...

The trap was triggered , but no rat to be found this morning....

The bread was still in the trap as well.

I think I'm going to try cheese and/or peanut butter instead.

but there are signs he was there?

seems like you've got a wily one (or more) on your hands.

May need to go forward with plan B (the stakeout)

Yup. He ate some of the bread.

He's a crafty one!

I'll give it another day or two. If no luck, it's prolly time for plan B.

Thanks again for your help.

Bucket of death
pjcas18 : 4/6/2022 11:22 am : link
may work, but I saw the rat in that picture, I wonder if he's big and strong enough to get himself out. Please add a trail cam if you try the bucket of death.

Rats are survivors, much more than mice, moles, voles, chipmunks, etc.

Also, be careful you don't piss him/them off and force them to come into the house and seek revenge.

LOL!!!
Seeds or nuts work good too.
BigBlue in Keys : 4/6/2022 1:30 pm : link
Crunch up some sunflower seeds or peanuts and make a trail to the trap. Then put a bigger pile behind the trip on the trap. It's incredible how smart a stupid rat can be.

Bucket of death will work without water as well if you want to be humane about it and release them which you seem to like to do.
I doubt an empty
pjcas18 : 4/6/2022 2:41 pm : link
bucket of death works on a rat.

check out the hops on this guy and then look how he climbs the wall - you think this one committed suicide but he survived. he'll get out of a 5-gallon bucket. Rats are resourceful, and as I mentioned above, survivors.

drown it, shoot it, poison it (all of them).

Going back to strictly bread.

The rats are nowhere to be found..

But, they are crazy. I'm cleaning out my garage and they actually ate some Rose Tone Fertilizer. Crazy stuff.

I'd rather not kill them if possible. TBS the rats appear to have gone AWOL for now.

You have to kill them
Vanzetti : 4/11/2022 11:01 pm : link
Rats are highly adaptable and you are training them to avoid traps.

You are just going to make the problem worse for yourself and your neighbors.

If you want their demise to be "natural" just get a dog that is a ratter, like a Dachshund, and he will kill them for you and enjoy doing it.

No. Your local owls, hawks, and other predators will thank you. Ask your local bird rescue what they think about poisoning varmints.

The problem with poison is the crawl in your wall and die and it stinks badly.

Have you used the old traditional?

I have not. I prefer the humane approach if possible.
As long as I continue to trap them I will avoid the kill kill approach

This is the worst time of year. I have sheds and various places in the backyard that seem like magnets for rodents, rabbits, and other small critters.

Two nights ago my two dogs wanted to go out at 1:30 AM which is unusual. I had just got home, so I let them out, they were outside for a while and i finally lured them in with treats and the big dog (puppy) ran right in and went up to my room where we have a dog bed for him.

The smaller dog, the older one, ran in slower, but I decided to give them both their treats upstairs to avoid fighting.

I gave the big dog the treat, I couldn't see a thing my room was dark, my wife was asleep, but woke up when the dogs ran in.

I saw the dog ignoring the treat and paying attention to something on my bed but I could not make out what it was - it seemed like the size of the rats in these pictures, and I said "holy shit is that a mouse"? I have never seen my wife move faster. She was up and out of the bed and hiding in the bathroom in a flash.

I turned the light on and looked and the big dog was standing proudly and protectively over a dead baby rabbit in my bed.

lol, I was so proud of him. My wife wants to move, burn down our house and of course replace our bed and incinerate any piece of bedding that has ever touched our bed.

I of course threw the dead rabbit (along with several more the past few days) over the fence.
That's three...

I went over there yesterday and looked there is nothing there. Zero. No fur, no bones, no carcasses.

I am positive that hawks, falcons, owls, foxes, raccoons, coyotes, and other predators are eating them, so I'm doing the world a favor since I have a fence and those animals are too big to get in easily (well not the birds, but either way, I'm feeding them).

Plus he always borrows my shit, so it evens out.
Why don’t you simply ask him if he minds?

For all you know he is picking up and throwing half of them away.

He's not, he'd tell me. He'd probably think it's funny.

Plus if he says no it limits my options on how to dispose of the bodies. You may not like it, and honestly that doesn't matter to me, but this is one of those cases where I'm fine asking for forgiveness instead of permission.
