puke? lol.

Honestly say I have never had it but I would assume its close to pork roll/Taylor Ham.

djm : 4/15/2022 1:08 pm : link
it's too slimy and weirdly gelatinous. Don't care how well done it is or how crispy. It's still spam.

PLus, one of the perks associated with living in Jersey is Taylor Ham or pork roll. We don't need that spam shit here. We have the goods, thx.
I hadn't had it in a very long time
Bill in UT : 4/15/2022 1:11 pm : link
My granddaughter from Utah had me buy some for her when she came to visit a couple of weeks ago. Like everything else, she didn't finish it. So over the last 2 days I've fried it with eggs. It was ok, not horrid but I don't plan on buying a new can, either. It's a huge favorite in Hawaii, I believe. I've never had Taylor ham, which a lot of people around Jersey seem to like, so I can't compare.
My Dad refused to eat it - said it reminded him

I didn't mind it as a kid. Haven't eaten it since.

I looked before posting and there seems to be a lot of disagreement about what it stands for. From Specially Made American Meat to a contraction of SPiced hAM.

It's a mash of Shoulder Pork and hAM.
It has a reputation as being 'gross'
LakeGeorgeGiant : 4/15/2022 1:19 pm : link
but I always found it odd that people that turn their nose at spam will eat hot dogs, bologna, and other processed meat.

It's not part of my regular diet or anything, but I would eat it. Ate it frequently as a kid actually. My grandather liked to fry it up with eggs.

It depends on what kind of hot dogs you’re eating. If you’re eating the cheap kind, yeah, that’s a whole lot of processed garbage. But, there are brands like Nathan’s, Ball Park, Vienna Beef, etc. that are all beef and/or angus beef.

Same as a hot dog I meant to say. Can't speak to the Spam thing.
I'm a fan, though admittedly haven't had it in years
sb from NYT Forum : 4/15/2022 2:03 pm : link
It's not the garbage product everyone thinks it is. It's probably better than hot dogs, actually. It's pork shoulder and ham. Not lips, snout, hooves and assholes like potted meat or vienna sausages.

Low sodium spam makes for a pretty decent sandwich.

At least it has an expiration date spam does not. What meat would you eat that doesn’t expire?

Funny story I had a guest in my restaurant many years ago came in with some friends for lunch sent the waitress into the kitchen and asked me to open the can and slice it and and wanted to buy 2 slices of bread for it. I said sure for the price of a large sandwich he opted to order off the menu after that.

Love fried bologna. I Like Spam, slowly fried, rids most of the gelled fat, great with eggs, or sliced up honey coated and baked.

That’s a Best Buy date not an expiration date. And apparently someone has some in the pantry Not a fridge were meat should be.
Spam is sold on a store shelf just the same
bwitz : 4/15/2022 3:17 pm : link
There’s no reason to put it in the fridge.

If that’s your definition then Taylor Ham isn’t meat either. Meat lasts a few days in the fridge before going bad. Taylor Ham lasts for weeks.
It's big here in Hawaii

Busting chops Jim

But weeks compared to 2 years from now is a pretty big difference wouldn't you say? It is April 2022.

If you enjoy it that's all that matters IMO to each is own.

I’m not that fond of it and haven’t had it in years.

Point is, it’s a matter of packaging. An open package of Taylor Ham or Spam lasts for a few days in the fridge. Vacuum sealed, Taylor Ham lasts for a few weeks. Spam would too if packaged that way. Canned products last for 2-3 years. Because the heat and pressure used in canning kills any pathogens that could spoil the food before the can is sealed.
I don't care for it....
Kev in Cali : 4/15/2022 4:03 pm : link
But my folks would cube it, put a small slice of dill pickle on top and stick Ia toothpick through to make cheap horderves of it.

It helped having pickle on it, but by itself, it wasn't very tasty to my pallet.
Never had it, but I'd eat it in a heartbeat over any breakfast cereal
Marty in Albany : 4/15/2022 4:15 pm : link
Two grams of carbs per serving.

Two grams of carbs per serving. Of course, regular ham has zero grams of carbs.

My Dad said the same. When he married my Mom he told her never to serve him Spam (or stewed tomatoes). Apparently, that's all he had to eat on Okinawa for a month or so.

But that made me really want to try it, lol. Eventually I did. I was not impressed. I don't think I've had it since then.

After the war, while he was on occupation duty in Korea, my Dad and many other GI's kept a lot of Korean families fed with Spam. I guess they acquired a taste for it, like the Hawaiians.

Until last year when I bought a tin. Fried for a sandwich and also had with eggs. I mentioned the bisque…
Was lucky as we usually had a Hebrew National salami chub in the fridge which I cubed and heated up in the toaster oven. Pork Roll I got on the outside.
Had a hankering this past week for sandwiches of my youth and picked up some deviled ham, which I have yet to open. Too busy eating the Fluffernutters.

Kind of a rip nowadays though. Gotta love that skyrocketing inflation.
