A lot of the drama is basically decided in the East.
All 8 playoff teams have clinched, only jockeying for position/seeding is left.
All teams have anywhere from 2 to 4 games left.
As it stands today (games remaining in () at the end):
E1: (Atlantic champ) Panthers 120 pts (clinched 1 seed) (4)
E2: (Metro champ*) Hurricanes 110 pts (*not clinched) (3)
E3: Leafs 109 pts (3)
E4: Rangers 108 pts (3)
E5: Lightning 105 pts (4)
E6: Bruins 101 pts (4)
E7: Pens 101 pts (3)
E8: Caps 99 pts (4)
If nothing changes the 1st round matchups would be:
Panthers vs Caps (A1 vs WC2)
Hurricanes vs Bruins (M1 vs WC1)
Leafs vs Lightning (A2 vs A3)
Rangers vs Pens (M2 vs M3)
If I'm the Rangers I'm fine where I am and they have clinched at worst the 2 seed in the Metro. I'd rather play the Pens than the Bruins.
I will add the West in a separate post (5 teams have clinched and basically 4 teams vying for the final 3 spots).
Team (usually home) is down one goal and scrounging and they never tie it. Oh well.
Good series.
I will admit Kuemper was not the Achilles heel I thought he would be, I don't think he was playoff Tim Thomas, and he let in some soft goals, but he did not doom his team like I thought he would.
And I think the reason is the Avs team speed forced TB to play a little differently and not force shots and pressure in the o-zone, the TB D are not fast, and they got exposed early in the series and couldn't play their game.
Hats off to COL and Makar on the Conn Smythe.
I think he's the only player ever to win Hobey Baker, Calder and Conn Smythe. And he's 23 years old.

Same thoughts...not a great series, but a good one. I never really paid attention to MacKinnen's game before. Holy shit he's quick and talented.
Very possible, a goalie, the first goalie to win the award, won in what would have been Leetch's sophomore year.
Anyway, seems like Chris Drury is the only other Hobey Baker winner to win a Calder, and there is no other Hobey Baker winner to win the Conn Smythe.
Now we have to hope the Avs get really fat this summer and fall.
So it seems Winnipeg is the one stop shop for the 2C the Rangers need, with both Scheifele and Dubois possibly available

The Bruins announce that Don Sweeney’s contract is done. He has been signed to a multi-year deal.
The Sedin's, Daniel Alfredsson and and Robert Luongo all elected.
Along with some people I never heard of.
Three players from those Canucks teams.
I wonder how many from the Bruins team who beat them make it (Bergeron, Chara, maybe Marchand).
I just assumed Neely is running the show, and Jacobs ordered it's Cassidy or Sweeney and Sweeney is his buddy.
Yeah the more I read analysis from people who have been doing deep analytical dives analyzing the NHL draft for a decade, it's talking me out of Slaf. His advanced metrics really are not great at all. That having been said at age 18 you can't over analyze that stuff especially with the way he's played in the 2 recent tournaments playing with men and apparently he had a very good playoff for his league team as well. Maybe the light went on the last 6 months? Increasingly I'm gravitating towards pushing hard to trade the pick in a deal for DeBrincat or maybe Pasta if they are truly available. If not trading it I'd seriously consider Cooley there or maybe even Nemec. It sure would be nice to have a potential top pairing of him and Luke Hughes for a decade.
Same here re: Slakovsky. I think he will be the pick at 2 but I really would prefer Cooley as I feel that he is a much safer prospect. Hell I would love to trade down to 4 or 5 to land Nemec while another team gambles on Slafkovskty.
IMO the Devils will not be picking this high again for a while so they need to hit with this pick. Slaf has a higher upside but I think Cooley is going to be an excellent player for the Devils.
As for trading the pick I would support if it didn't require them to hand out another massive contract to the player they acquire. The Devils have cap space now but they need to sign Bratt long term this offseason and he will certainly get $6.5-7.5 million per season to go along with Hischier, Hughes, and Hamilton's contracts. Plus Sharangovich, Severson, Siegenthaler, Graves, and Mercer in the next 1-3 years. Plus if Luke Hughes and Alexander Holtz are as good as expected they will be expensive in the near future.
Salvador would make a great coach. Too bad that he doesn't want to work behind the bench.

Ok. I've been pretty nice and quiet about Patrick Elias being kept out. However this class is simply ridiculous. The Second absolutely no problem. I'd be fine with Alfie making it, but how do you put him in and leave Elias out? Elias was the best fwds for the Devils just about his whole career, won 2 cups, played in 4 finals, their scoring and games played were in the same ballpark. Elias also had 125 points in the playoffs.
Don't get me started on Luongo. Are you fucking kidding me? Who's going in next? Cory Schneider?

Meant to say the Sedins making it no problem.
Agreed. Mogilny's stats alone put him there, but the importance of his legacy, having been the first Soviet to have the guts to defect as a teen is even more important. I'm sorry this class is a bad joke.
July 7: NHL Draft 1st round
July 8: Rounds 2 - 7 of NHL Draft
July 13: Free agency opens
August 9 - 20: World Juniors rescheduled for Edmonton - this was the tournament scheduled in December that got shut down for COVID, it's a huge draft event, so I'm not sure what the attendance will be like. Any player on the prior roster can play, just not sure how many will with the draft already having happened and camps just around the corner
26 years old, good on the dots, defensively responsible, can play SH and in a pinch PP, with some scoring punch. Under contract the next 3 years @ a fair $4.45M.
more a 40-50pt player than an 80, but with the right linemates can be a 2C.
@ShawnHutcheon
According to sources close to the situation, David Quinn is the leading candidate to be the next head coach of the Boston Bruins.

He isnt a 2C. The Rangers need a real 2C

teams who need a C should be looking at is Christian Dvorak in MTL.

This isn't a Rangers thread, I said teams who need a C in general.
And who is a 2C? How many 2C's are better than Dvorak and for the price?
Not many.
Tavares? Point/Stamkos? Pettersson? Draisaitl when he's not on a line with McDavid?
The Avs won a cup with Kadri or Compher as their 2C.
Look up Kadri's 25/26 year old stats and tell me how he's better than Dvorak.
The Panthers won the East with Sam Bennett as their 2C. Which areas is Bennett better than Dvorak.
You can do a lot worse than Dvorak as your 2C (and I include Strome in that worse than Dvorak category).
Yes.
Solid, Young, and Cost Controlled
Dvorak, the Yotes 2C at the moment, put up 18-20-38 in 70 games last season. He’s been a consistent 40-point pace player since entering the league. The 24 year old center has another five years left on his deal with a cap hit of $4.45 million.......Right off the bat, we see that Dvorak really helped drive offense with the Coyotes this year. This is evidence that Dvorak is a play driver and not a passenger. He is more than just his offensive line, which is important. The Rangers have goal scorers, but they need play drivers. Dvorak does just that.
He’s also far from a liability in his own end. His defensive play isn’t going to wow you, but he gets the job done. He’s a much better option defensively than most of the current centers on the Rangers roster. The two-way play would be a welcomed addition down the middle.
and they suggest pairing him with Panarin.

The Rangers need a proven guy, not someone making 4.3 whom you hope can raise his game

k
Unless the NYR are sure they can extend him, that a dicey gamble and would be a costly one (in prospects) and probably a $6M min cap hit for the one year.
Also not sure the Rangers could afford to sign him even if they wanted to.
@NHLRumorsDaily
#NYR have been in talks with WPG for Pierre-Luc Dubois per RDS. Interesting.

According to sources, the #mnwild have traded the rights to pending restricted free agent Kevin Fiala to the #lakings for their 2022 first-round pick and University of Minnesota captain Brock Faber
a top prospect + a 1st round pick.
Fiala is an RFA and can be a UFA after the season.

Fiala signed a 7 year contract with a $7.9 AAV with the Kings. He's a good player but I am very happy that the Devils did not acquire him at that price. If he can repeat the year he just had then he will be worth it but I think he will perform more at his previous levels in the 50 point range.

Wow did the Devil's dodge a bullet there. Not that I was ever that into getting him. You have to be careful evaluating guys who had big point spikes this year. Scoring went through the roof this year. I don't mind the Devils spending for an elite fwd like DeBrincat or Pasta or Johnny Hockey as a UFA. However 8 mill a year for a talent like Fiala just isn't good use of our space right now.
holy shit that had to be painful.
