Iowa safety Dane Belton projects as a rotational safety and subpackage defender at the NFL level. Belton boasts the size of a traditional strong safety but his role in the Iowa defense has been primarily as a nickel defender charged with playing a pseudo-linebacker role and taking reps on the hash in zone coverage. Belton is at his best getting involved in run fits and playing in the shallow areas of the field as an add-on who can zone up shallow spaces if needed on passing downs. Link - ( New Window )
I think they are letting different people make the picks different days, hearkens back to the days when Reese would pick JPP type players and Coughlin would pick BC/Syracuse players.

Dane Belton is a SS prospect in the 2022 draft class. He scored a 9.35 RAS out of a possible 10.00. This ranked 52 out of 788 SS from 1987 to 2022. https://ras.football/ras-information/?PlayerID=21648&pos=SS #RAS
Elite speed, meh agility. Get this kid running downhill, attacking, in a straight line.
Sy'56's Scouting Report on S Dane Belton: Junior entry from Tampa, FL. Two-year starter that earned All Big-10 honors in both 2020 and 2021, first team in 2021. Belton played a hybrid safety/linebacker role that saw him involved in the box more often than not. He has a sturdy, strong frame with plus-power and straight line speed. He factors well in pursuit sideline to sideline and had a high success rate as a tackler. Belton started to turn a corner as a junior in coverage. He showed quality ball skills and plus-body control out of his breaks. He shows minimal wasted motion once he made up his mind. He can get into trouble when trying to forecast routes and throws, as he seems a step behind mentally and shows tightness in his hips laterally. He projects as a nickel or dime safety that can creep up toward the line and he will be a weapon on special teams.
he can help in sub-packages in Wink's defense?
My guess is he will get time on special teams as well.
They said he has good hands, interesting for a DB.
It's a 4th rd. pick, can't complain about this pick.
I mean good tackler… good hands… 4.4 speed for a safety… a 1.49 10 yard split. I mean other than being 4th in all the ncaa last year in Int what has he done! They should have drafted a slower DB that had two picks instead!

First team Big Ten, they should have drafted an All-American.
that they are picking players that fit their systems, not the perfect 4 th rounder on someone’s Big board.
Reminds me of some Playoff Fantasy Hockey leagues ive participated in after not seeing more than 5-10 games the entire year. Id just line up the top scorers and pick whoever was highest. That can work for a fantasy team, probably not so much when building an actual team.
When you look at the fact this kid is instinctive, versatile, had too tier combine measurables for his position, AND given Iowa’s history of producing safeties, it does feel like this guy was a relatively overlooked. He doesn’t have that look of a big imposing athletic safety that would go in the 1st or 2nd round and sometimes that’s all it takes for a guy to get overshadowed— he seems to get the job done though and that’s what matters.
I have been told by some on BBI that Schoen will be “another middling GM”, I believe because as we all know he looks at Daniel Jeremiah’s “best available” list, purposely scrolls down to the MIDDLE of the list, closes his eyes and points randomly at a name, then keeps his eyes closed as his assistant jots the name down & submits the card — that way Schoen can be surprised when the pick is announced on TV (he really loves surprises).
But some guys really do slip through the cracks and fall down boards for reasons that don’t make sense in hindsight— luckily even on Daniel Jeremiahs board. Let’s hope Belton was one of those guys!
I really enjoyed watching how Iowa deployed Belton. The kid can flat out blitz. Not surprisingly Wink’s defense will probably rank top 5 in blitz percentage this year. I would take under on that… Ravens had a 61 percent blitz rate in 2020 which led the league. So yea, the pick makes a ton of sense Im super content with it, now grab a middle linebacker that can shoot some gaps in the 5th.

Fourth-round pick Dane Belton said he took a pre-draft visit to the Giants. That wasn't previously reported. Again, Giants clearly had targets they identified throughout the process and spent a lot of time with them.
RE: If he was so good, he would have been picked yesterday.
That will accept being indoctrinated into our losing 10 year culture.
Let me explain, it just seems we didnt take the best prospect for the position in the round. Just seemswe are settling in on lesser prospects vs what’s available.
How so?
I think Giants really did a poor job in evaluating Dean.
LOL, drinking already I see :)

But alright, cool
Cmon bro, you’re slacking. If you want to be a GM you need to know all these guys
I know. I got to be on top of these things.

You are one absolutely miserable SOB. Lol.
Be sure to kick the dog on your way out the door.
Jordan Reid was on there and he likes him, although admits he isn't physically gifted like your typical top S prospect. Relies on instincts a lot.
To me, sounds like a good kid who can come in and compete at a number of spots and fits how Wink disguises his defenses.
My guess is he will get time on special teams as well.

Is this a serious comment?
68-70: Late Day 3 – Back end of roster / Practice Squad / Development guy
LMAO!!

Giants are just picking their guy.

He sucks.
Spot on! Most of the guys picked today have a very small chance of making a roster.
Wow - sucks to be you. Are you happy about anything?
Giants seem to have a lot of guys that play the nickel DB role:
Love
Holmes
Aaron Robinson
Flott played some nickel at LSU
And not Belton
Probably a good problem to have

Scouting reports seem to indicate a lack of range.
and Eric’s post above drew a legit LOL, so thank you for that.
