D.J. Davidson is a sufficient-level athlete for a bigger young man, with sufficient agility and lateral mobility. In the passing game, he has sufficient value. He lacks good quickness to take advantage when he is shaded over a lineman. He is primarily a power rusher who can occasionally generate pressure by disengaging. In the run game, he is hard to move. He holds the point of attack against single blocks and double teams. He has good functional strength to disengage and get to the football. He has schematic versatility to play in an even or odd front, but will likely be most effective as an early-down player. Link - ( New Window )
Fifth year senior from Mesa, AZ. Took an additional year off between high school and college. Three-year starter that earned second team All-Pac 12 honors in 2021. Davidson will best project to a zero-tech in a 3-4 front. There, his natural power and ability to two-gap will be used most effectively. In an even front, he will not offer much as a pass rusher, but he could fit into a situational role as well. Davidson can play with quick feet in addition to a hard-to-move presence against the run. He has a natural sense to feel blocks and flow to the ball. He needs to work on lower body bend and techniques so his pad level can be better. The lack of leverage wins will eat him up at the next level. Davidson needs to fully buy in to fixing his body and skill set for a couple years before he can be trusted.

Thanks Jeff. Very helpful since I had never heard of him before.

Big body that shows good feel for blocks and spacing. Will be able to 2-gap, a necessity for Martindale's scheme but don't expect much here as a pass rusher. Poor pad level and needs body-work.

this sounds like an undrafted free agent to me
RE: RE: Every pick we have taken since the first was projected to go at least
Both these guys would have probably been available as priority free agents....
Who cares about projections. Let them have a chance to get the players they think fit.
Crush them if they fail at something, not before.
I hear you, but it is about maximizing assets.
I maintain for instance that the second trade down in the second was a bad move of epic proportions. Look at what was available, and look at who we ended up drafting. We could have taken a TE McBride, or CB Booth, S Petre, or WR Pickens there, and I maintain any one of those players would have been better value than both Robinson and Belton....
And furthermore, we probably did not need to choose, since both Robinson and Belton would have been available at least a full round later than we picked them. We could have maximized the value of our 2nd round pick and still got those guys anyway....

that I'm unable to convince myself I like even a little bit.
25 year old rookie, limited upside, almost every source had him as an UDFA. Better options at his position on the board.
Also, I've long been an advocate for Dex at NT...not sure why 3 coaching staffs have left him at DE. Between this pick and signing of Ellis, it appears Dex is staying at 3-4 DE.
Would have preferred Jerome Ford or Zyon McCollum
RE: Every pick we have taken since the first was projected to go at least
I think this pick tips off their intentions with Dex. It's been speculated (and seems logical) that he would move to Nose but I think they would have opted for an Inside-Out type rather than backing Ellis if that was the case.

Clearly, Joe Schoen is just not throwing darts in the draft.
Regardless of what you think about where players should be drafted in terms of round, it's clear the Giants are drafting players they identified throughout the process.

And there are plenty that come from unlikely spots. Either he has strength and leverage to anchor or he’ll get cut.
This is a case where a prospect being older is fine, how he holds up at the POA is the entire ballgame. Hopefully he can be a find like michael pierce in BAL.
This is a brand new Giants GM and he's drafting for the time ever
period. He's 42 years old and his resume has surrounded him with a lot of really smart football people. His assistant GM and HC and OC are all guys who have been promoted into their positions for the first time and it's their first draft in those spots. All of them have also been around really smart football people on their way to the Giants. The DC is a different story and has a lot of experience in his role. But he's not a follower. There aren't many defenses as aggressive as his.
I think this draft shows where the GM thinks the league is going and for once the Giants are out in front or at least on the cutting edge. The bottom line is that this is a Thibodeaux and Neal draft. If the two of them live up to their scouting reports this draft is a home run. If any of the other drafted players in any round turn into good starters or dare we dream an impact player that would be one of the best drafts in Giants history. Let's hope the first two guys are home runs and 2 of the other draftees are more than JAG. If that happens Joe Schoen is going to look really smart. I don't care what round the NFL Draft industrial complex group thought them into.
It's pretty clear the Giants GM and HC have a plan and vision in mind for turning around the worst offense in the NFL immediately. IMO that plan seems to be get the ball out Daniel Jones hands quickly so the OL doesn't wreck the game and get the ball to explosive players and let them create. I don't think that's their long term plan but until the OL jells and they see what they have with Jones in their scheme that seems like a good idea to me.
On defense I think they drafted players with specific skill sets that fit the biggest craters so that Wink can do what he wants to do. I think the guys drafted in the 4th and 5th round are targeted as ST teams and defensive rotational players for early downs vs passing downs. If any of them become more than that it's a home run.
Both these guys would have probably been available as priority free agents....

I agree wiht the second trade down. They got too cute.
What do you want the conversation on here look like?

The people complaining about the complainers are just as exhausting. I realize the irony in me taking it to the 3rd level. It's like a giant human centipede of people bitching, the people flipping out over the picks are at least in the front.
and apoplexy.
Maybe an opportunity to develop might be helpful.
He sees himself as a NT, and we need on, at least rotationally, so I’m not sure it precludes Dex from moving to a NT while they try to develop DJ.
RE: Every pick we have taken since the first was projected to go at least
Malik Willis went late third round. There were BBIers seriously talking about taking him with 5 or 7, and the consensus here was certainly no lower than high second round. Who was right and who was wrong? Only time will tell.
Same with D.J. Davidson. We need another nose tackle. This guy fits the bill at least physically. Let's see him play.

Having an opinion is fine. Doesn't mean if it's a bad one nobody should say anything.
Barring injuries to Ellis, Lawrence, etc, Davidson gets a year to build his strength and endurance, with an eye toward a more meaningful role in 2023.
