2 guards from North Carolina
2 cornerbacks from LSU
2 d-linemen from Florida

Plus the 2 San Diego players

Seems like the scouts didn’t want to do a lot of traveling to look for talent.

I'm not listing tryout players at this time because there will be at least a couple of dozen of them.

Some of the "signed" players may actually be tryout players... we've seen this before. We've also seen guys back out and sign with other teams.

Yeah, pretty wild.

And as Yankee pointed out, a lot of major programs. I also noticed we have a number of guys who transferred schools.

Got it. Makes sense.
I’m intrigued by the double dipping
UConn4523 : 5/1/2022 2:17 pm : link
if you identify a unit on a team that you like, it makes sense to get multiple cracks at getting the player that made the unit what it was. These are most mid rounders and on so it’s virtually no investment.

Signings are Hall, Corbin, & Corker.

Hall will make the roster and be a valuable piece as an Hback- he can be Giants version of Kyle Juscyzk/Mike Sellers

Corbin has a ton of juice- I can see him beating out Brightwell/Williams as RB3

Corker is in line to make the roster as a 4th safety, but I think his real value will be as a ST player- Nat Berhe type of role.

Truesdell is also interesting- had some really good film at Auburn, but had minimal impact at UF. Also got (from what I’ve seen reported) the most GTD money so he was a priority for the Giants front office.
As far as I can tell, the only players coming from weaker conference

if the double-dipping is in any way an effort to help players get/stay comfortable.

you don't have long for some of these players to make an impression, and many of them are 20-23 years old, seems like whatever you can do to get them comfortable and focusing on football the soonest the better read you get as a team to see what you have to work with.

just a thought.

In this article:

Daylen Baldwin
American football wide receiver

The wide receiver from Farmington, Michigan has inked a deal to become a professional football player.

Daylen Baldwin came from the class of 2017, but his journey didn’t start at Michigan. His journey started much smaller than the Big House.

"Baldwin played two seasons at Morgan State before transferring to now HBCU powerhouse, Jackson State where he played two more seasons. Baldwin came to Michigan as a graduate transfer this past season, and he looked to make an instant impact with the Wolverines."

Looks like a good WR prospect size wise.

Strong character guy. Won’t beat anybody on his routes but very good hands and extends for the ball - at almost 6 8 will get the ball. Not afraid to block but hard to get correct angles with his height. Tougher than he looks. Just can’t seem to put on much more weight.

Look at the tape of him.... he has crazy long legs. Not sure I've seen that in the NFL for a TE.

i wanted them to grab lindstrom but ill take it. MSU has him 6'3 315.

I presume he bypassed other offers because he likes the depth chart here (as he should because there are basically 0 natural centers on the roster lol).

Matt Allen is another who will turn 25 as a rookie.
Big Blue Blogger : 5/1/2022 6:55 pm : link
That might be one reason there wasn’t much buzz around him. He’s also REALLY slow for a center. On the other hand, Travis Frederick was slow too, and he turned out OK. It depends what you’re going to ask your center to do. But Allen’s 40 was even worse than Frederick’s. Wouldn’t matter in 1-on-1 drills, so the lack of foot speed may not have been so evident at the Hula Bowl.
40 times for OL?
Pete in VA : 5/1/2022 7:34 pm : link
I don't see how they could possibly be relevant, ever. A time for 10 yards, maybe. Three cone, perhaps, but someone would have to explain what 40 times indicate, unless they are somehow indicative of athleticism and quickness, but here are much better ways to test that.

I am now up to 16 that are indicating they are UDFAs (and not mini camp tryouts)

If my research is correct, we have a whole bunch of cuts coming from the current roster, as I am showing 97 total with roster, draft picks and UDFAs.

And of course some mini camp tryouts could also be signed.

This is quickly becoming a Schoen/Daboll roster.

Here is what I show for the UDFAs:

1. CB Darren Evans, LSU
2. TE/FB Jeremiah Hall, Oklahoma
3. DT Tyrone Truesdell, Florida
4. DL Christopher Hinton, Michigan
5. DL Jabari Ellis, South Carolina
6. TE Austin Allen, Nebraska
7. EDGE Tomon Fox, North Carolina
8. DB Yusuf Corker, Kentucky
9. OL Josh Rivas, Kansas State
10. RB Jashaun Corbin, Florida State
11. S Trenton Thompson San Diego State
12. CB Zyon Gilbert Florida Atlantic
13. WR Daylen Baldwin Michigan
14. DT Antonio Valentino Florida
15. WR Andre Miller Maine

I disagree. If you look at the commentary on these players they all fit a certain profile that Daboll/Schoen are looking to build. The draft is not just scouts suggesting their favorite guys regardless of the system. A key emphasis is if they fit what the team is trying to build. You saw a lot of bad drafts under Jim Fassel because I am not even sure he knew what type of player he wanted to build around. They initially improved under Tom Coughlin because Tom knew what he wanted from each position and conveyed it to the scouts either directly or through Accorsi/Reese. The drafts started to suck when (1) the game changed and Tom Coughlin was slow reacting and (2) because of number one the team was drafting players that did not mesh well with each other because it was basically going from scout to scout and saying which guys do you personally like most. That continued under Ben McAdoo and Pat Shurmur because both of them were more like Fassel than Coughlin. I think Joe Judge could have been like Coughlin, but his act just rubbed people the wrong way and Gettleman was too close with Chris Mara.

wow.

that's not a surprising number. to get to 90 from 53 every single teams adds a net minimum of 37 even if they cut nobody, right?

on quick count they actually turned the roster over about the same amount last offseason than this one:

2021 vet FA = 33
2021 draft = 6
2021 UDFAs = 3
total = 42

presumably because it was a thin draft they overloaded on veteran FA last year at the expense of udfas.

in 2020 they actually turned the roster over even more than this year:

veteran FA - 25
UDFAs - 16
draft picks - 10

total = 51

So there were more in 2021, however the end of season active roster was only 49 so they were 4 spots fewer on the 53 unlike 19 + 20.

it does appear it was an outlier year for IR though.

When do we learn about the guillotine coming down on the holdover scouts and losers in the FO (Chris Pettit)?

I'm not sure Pettit is going anywhere...if you watch the inside the Giants War Room videos, Schoen was fist bumping him.

Dave on the UWS : 5/2/2022 12:49 pm : link
Schoen wants (that includes ALL the scouts), then he is fine with retaining people. I don't think he will be shy about firing people if that is necessary. If Petit realizes there is a new Sherif in town, and he better get his act together, I'm fine with that.

Exactly. He's not making final decisions. I would expect a few people will move on, but not whole scale changes. They seem to have had a plan and executed there plan.

note regarding Deion Sanders.

Our new WR Daylen Baldwin played at Jackson St for Sanders. In Baldwin's final year of eligibility, he transferred to Michigan.

So we have added two Deion Sanders coached players

I didn't even know Sanders was coaching!
Come on?! Ypou didn't know? You don't remember him getting snippy with a reporter who didn't refer to him as Coach?

Schoen credit for continuing his search for OLs.

The Giants have Canada's top rated college left tackle, Noah Zerr, attending the rookie tryout.

These Canadian player tryouts have almost been a Giants tradition, and have often been a disappointment because of their size, but Zerr is 6'7" and listed at 305.

The Giants
YANKEE28 : 5/3/2022 10:24 am : link
also have a Canadian QB attending.

He is significantly under sized.

Perhaps will be tried at another position.

@eric from bbi re roster churn
Eric on Li : 5/3/2022 10:35 am : link
found this recent post from OTC today.

Quote:
The first thing I wanted to look at was simply year by year roster churn. What I did was go back to 2013 and look at every teams roster at the end of the season and then see if that player was on the team the following season and/or the season after that. To say NFL rosters are unstable is certainly an understatement. On average only 56% of players return from one year to the next and two years out it is just around 35%.

So the baseline is basically 30 players from the prior year + 23 new ones.

For nyg I count more than 20 players who are basically 53 man locks barring injury (not including injury risks like gates/peart). And then a bunch of young guys from prior regimes still competing for spots (like cam brown, roche, etc). If i was handicapping it today i'd say it's pretty much even odds on the over and under.
