Who is coming out next year that will be a top rated QB? Currently, the top 2 QB in next year’s draft are from Alabama and Ohio State, two schools that have not placed any elite QB’s into the NFL in a very long time. I would argue that Alabama and Ohio State QB’s are surrounded by so many 5 star players that they are often elevated by them to a higher level. So, I’m curious to hear what you all think the best choice would be for the Giants at QB if Daniel Jones doesn’t work out.
size is a fair(ish) question, i'd hope he can at least measure in similar to Mayfield (6'1, 215).
in his 2 games against UGA this year, the SEC Championship and the NC game, he put up almost 800 yards passing with 4 passing tds, 1 rushing td, and 2 turnovers (1 when he had to force things at the end of the NC game, and after both starting WRs were out injured).
im not sure any college player has ever played a defense so close to pro level, and he did it twice. in the SEC championship with Jameson Williams healthy he lit them up for 41 points. He was 26/44 for 421 and 3 tds/0 ints. plus 1 rushing. his size was irrelevant behind a pro sized OL and against a front 7 bigger/maybe better than most NFL teams.
i actually thought his performance in the NC game may have been even more impressive because he took an absolute beating and kept his team in it despite losing their best 2 players on offense.
tyler van dyke also has a shot to turn in a big year. big arm, enough mobility, and broke a lot of records last year out of nowhere without much talent around him (his top 2 WRs were UDFAs).
Bryce Young has Heisman performance vs Georgia 2021 SEC Championship - ( New Window )
He was always more "QB1" hype than anything else. just like Fromm.
everyone talked about Herbert for 2-3 years and that turned out right. lots of different paths, Bryce Young's reminds me of Watson because the lack of prototypical dimensions has falsely put the "college QB" label on him even though all he's done is compete against top level competition.
He's going to be worth a long look. I mentioned him yesterday on another thread. When I watched him for a few minutes during the regular season he looked much better than his days at PSU. Very good arm, underrated athlete and decent mover. Saw the connection he had with Robinson...
Hopefully 3 enter the draft that BD feels he can win big with. Most likely he will not get a Josh Allen so he will have to adjust scheme accordingly.
Perhaps a big physical OL that can gain yards on the ground with a smart heady QB with balls and good arm talent is good enough with the right kind of team.
Or perhaps Jones steps up, they tag him and evaluate the 2024 draft.
But there are just more prospects than this year with Hooker, Richardson, McCall, Haener, Levis, Jurkovec, Rattler, Armstrong, etc.
Interesting mix of pocket passers and dual-threats.
JFC...I swear I was going to just write, "I predict Googs/Chris Mara goes with Stetson Bennett..." ;)

Why not Bennett?...he’ll be coming off two National Championships in a row

Agreed. He’s a winner.
Also need to watch the QB from Kentucky who had a good year in 2021.
Not interested at all in Slovis.

Too small, average arm...ZERO plus skills.
You'll be lucky if you win the SEC East, btw...
And we'll reserve the QB spot for one of his sons in 22 years, whether he plays football or not.
It's such a warm and fuzzy story, it gives me the feels.

I am just kidding about Bennett.
But not about the two in a row... :- )
If they have a conviction on a gut I thing they’ll give up mega draft assets as the team will be in much better shape. They’ll have lots of CAP space with a reset on the rookie QB contract.

Awwww, poor little butthurt crybaby cant deal with the Giants going against his moronic advice and not taking a QB this weekend
I can’t think of any. They had a very high draft pick in the early 80’s Art S? but he had tons of gambling issues.
Since Tressel righted the program it’s been really nothing. I don’t like Fields either at this point. System U perhaps.
That’s what I think too.
Well, Joe Burrow started at Ohio State... ;)
Even under Tressel and Meyer, OSU did not operate anything near a pro passing attack. It was dual QBs like Smith, Jones, Pryor...even Krenzel to an extent. Now that Day is in full control, I expect the QB prospects to be much better heading into the NFL because Day is a great, great offensive mind.
he checks every box and has the chance to make himself a lot of $ this year. the numbers he put up last year were absurd.

It's not whining, it's joking, you wanker.
And my feelings aren't hurt that the Giants didn't draft a QB. I'm fine with what they did.
And I didn't advise the Giants to do anything. And you'd know that if you had basic reading comprehension.

The NFL definitely made a point about this year s quarterbacks in the draft.
Does put the absolute statements made about how Willis, Corral and others would be a definite upgrade over Jones in a different perspective

Or it just tells us what Jones actually is.

Keep forgetting about TVD. Need to catch more of him. Saw most of the Pitt game - to check out Pickett - and TVD played pretty well. Reminded me a bit of Matthew Stafford with that release.
I don't think it's a guarantee they take one in 2023. Taylor is on a two year deal after all.

There will also be free agents. Could see someone like Mayfield or Darnold getting a stop gap contract. Maybe they bring in Tannehill.
I’m starting to think a Kerry Collins type for the next QB. A veteran/transition for a few years until the opportunity is right to pounce on the next guy.

Agreed. He has graceful throws and touch and i love that he has a zen like approach to adversity. I think he's one to watch

Not sure how you conclude that. While few had Jones targeted for the 6th pick, isn’t it true he was most likely going in the first round somewhere.
I just think your very low opinion of him is not shared in the NFL, certainly not by Schoen and Daboll, and even some analysts like Kiper
There is a reason the Giants were mostly mocked for that pick. He was a reach.

None of those guys blow my hair back - might as well extend Taylor at a lower cost.

I ve defended Jones, but I never felt he should have been the 6 th pick. Selecting Barkley at #2 the year before set into motion the need to reach for a quarterback the next year l, which set into motion passing on Herbert
I have been consistent in my view of the Barkley since 10 seconds after it was made
With slight variation in wording, that is how Gettleman famously defined "quarterback hell" shortly after taking the NYG GM job, as the 2018 draft process was heating up.
But, perversely, the context in which he offered the definition was to justify exactly what he wound up doing a few months down the road on draft day: i.e., not using the golden opportunity of a number two overall pick to take a QB.
His rationale being that if a QB is only decent, he will leave you in QB hell, so better to take the sure fire, gold-jacket-in-waiting running back.
Of course, one year later he fell in full bloom love with a QB few thought had the prospect of being anything better than decent.
In next year's draft, I see Stroud and Young going 1-2 to the teams with the two worst records, no trade ups considered.
Teams have seen the mistakes that the Giants and others have made and will not repeat.
I don't think it's a guarantee they take one in 2023. Taylor is on a two year deal after all.
We don't need WA now. We have Thibs. ;)
Surprised you don't like Stroud. Good size, precision thrower, good arm, good pocket awareness and very good throwing on the run.
and bad news - if they are anywhere close then daboll probably isn't the guy and will anderson doesnt matter. i cant think of any great coaches that only won 2 or 3 games or less in any season no matter how bad their situation.
its time to start making progress, which means picking later not higher.

Put Anderson and Thibodeaux together. Strengthen a strength.
I'm always skeptical of both Alabama and Ohio State quarterbacks. They are always surrounded by the best players in the field, particularly the OL and WRs. Their games rarely resemble life in the NFL. We'll see what that do this year. I'll definitely be watching them closely.
One of my favorite players last year was Caleb Williams at Oklahoma. He transferred to USC with Lincoln Riley. Had a very god year as a true freshman relieving Spencer Rattler. I think he's going to be the top QB prospect in the '24 draft. Excellent dual threat QB.

So apathetic with this team i am willing to wait.

To my eye that guy looked like the real deal.
Mara might not feel the same.
Schoen and Daboll need to find the guy sooner rather than later.
Mahomes
Jackson
Allen
Wilson
Watson
Herbert
I hope Schoen/Daboll can identify someone next year without forcing or reaching on the pick like Jones.
Plus guys like Uiagalelei (Clemson), Armstrong (UVA, so Greg can let us know how legit he is), and Cameron Ward (put up insane numbers at FCS Incarnate Word and will play at Washington State this season)
Is Chris Mara the current paradigm for Lady Macbeth?
If they move on, I'm a Bryce Young guy. I like how he plays in the big games, I think his arm is fine and he moves well in the pocket. But I think there will be a few good candidates to choose from in 23.
