Pettit & O'Brien out in Giants front office

Matt in SGS : 5/2/2022 6:38 pm
"A new GM means changes, and the #Giants are moving on from Dir of College Scouting Chris Pettit & Sr. Personnel Executive Kyle O'Brien. Pettit had been w/team since '05, helping win 2 Super Bowls, while O'Brien, who has served w/#Jaguars, #Patriots, #Lions, arrived last spring."

Rare to have a front office guy be in the news
Ten Ton Hammer : 5/2/2022 6:47 pm : link
Like Pettit was.

They didn't waste a second cleaning him out.
I still wonder if Shoen used interest in Cross
Andy in Halifax : 5/2/2022 6:47 pm : link
To identify the major leak.

Cause for all talk of our interest predraft, we sure seemed to have minimal actual interest.
Wow.
Dave in Hoboken : 5/2/2022 6:47 pm : link
That should make alot of fans happy.
Someone should have enough pull here to get Sy an interview
Payasdaddy : 5/2/2022 6:48 pm : link
although I think his body of work should get it done by itself.
Greedy side of me wouldnt want him to go!!!
but if its a few more wins, I will take it
Guess

we know who's in charge. Best of luck to both of them, but the change was needed.
I wonder if Schoen's lack
KarenP : 5/2/2022 6:48 pm : link
of faith in the scouts led him to draft the players that he, Daboll and/or Brown had met personally? Maybe not, maybe it's more "normal" to have interaction with draft picks, which previous Giants' GMs didn't always seem to have.

Not surprised

This stuff usually happens immediately after draft but before meetings to discuss schedules for 2022 NCAA seasons.
I wouldnt be surprised if there was a set up to catch leaks
Payasdaddy : 5/2/2022 6:49 pm : link
But its not like we are the only team that has them.
We just focus on our own, like we should.
Hahaha

Good work by Schoen.

Not a surprise BUT

it does show Schoen and Daboll are in charge, as they should be.

Nope that sort of interaction is normal if you watch like Indianapolis Colts YouTube videos. I have a feeling that the “reaches” this year were because Giants had less names on the board than usual as the new philosophies change what type of player you are looking to draft and scouts may not have had good enough reads on some players that would have been on Giants board had they been looking for these traits from the beginning.
Whoa

There's

a new sheriff in town and his name is Joe Schoen.
This is where the negativity gets tiresome..
Sean : 5/2/2022 6:55 pm : link
I’ve been negative, and I’m not a Jones fan. But the annoyance about “reaching”, come on.

The expectations all season included the following:

-Mara would promote Abrams and keep Judge.
-Mara would force an outside GM on Judge for a half measure.
-Mara would force the HC hire on Schoen (Flores).
-Mara would require Schoen to exercise Jones 5th year option.
-Mara would not allow wholesale front office changes.

Well, none of that has happened. Schoen was able to hire Brandon Brown and get rid of Pettit. I don’t see how anyone can be annoyed with the state of the Giants right now. Will it work? I don’t know, but change is happening.

This is probably a lot closer to reality than the made for TV drama fans concoct about how it works. You can only project what a team is going to do based on data, and there was no track record to draw on with a Shoen front office.
Better days ahead, finally.

Probably would have done this on day one but given the short amount of time to prep for the draft, gave them a three month stay likely on a short leash.

This offseason is finally yielding reasons for optimism where absolutely none have existed for years.
Now We Just Need To Read:
Trainmaster : 5/2/2022 7:02 pm : link

"Chris Mara and Tim McDonnell have been named as Senior VP and Senior Director respectively of the new Giants Horse Racing Operations. Due to their new responsibilities, Chris and Tim will no longer be able to be involved in the Giants Football Operations. We thank Chris and Tim for their prior efforts and wish them well in this new and exciting endeavor".
Sean I’d say this
NoGainDayne : 5/2/2022 7:02 pm : link
to me the reaching is a sign that they might not be changing. The prior regime had the same we know more than the league attitude. Things could be better they might not be. They did keep Abrams. Everything Mara had to say this off-season was disconcerting as much as I loved their measured approach to FA.

Petit was publicly embarrassed and O’Brien was clearly a Judge hire. Seems like easy exits to me. Still good that they did it.

In my mind there is data to support this is getting fixed and data to support it isn’t. I understand hope. You aren’t empathizing with the other side and that’s your prerogative but there are a decent number of intelligent posters that share this view
Perhaps the 'Nephew' is next...

The only way something happens to him is if he is implicated enough in Flores lawsuit that the Giants would win on a Summary Judgment but for him and they lose big as a result.

RE: ... cleaning house on Gettleman’s lackeys.

I'd guess there is a lot of "pre-Gettleman housing cleaning" that is needed as well.

Well,
darren in pdx : 5/2/2022 7:09 pm : link
if there was any remaining doubt or concern about if Schoen is running the show, there it is. This is the teardown we didn't get when Coughlin was forced to 'retire.' Really not much to do other than hope Schoen and Daboll gets the franchise on the right track, even if it's someone else down the road that brings in the next trophy.

Keep in mind that the best time to sack a GM and hire a new one is early-mid season so they have time to set the board. By the time Schoen came in, we were already well into preparing for the draft.

So even if the Giants were still drafting based on previous philosophies (which they were not IMO), you wouldn't see the huge change until next offseason.
Would love to see Sy get an interview
Metnut : 5/2/2022 7:09 pm : link
Either way, getting Pettit out of here was necessary. Wish it happened 5 years ago but better late than never

No (I don't, I'll let Art speak for himself). Area scouts have been extended or told they'll be back. Schoen expected to bring in colleagues from his previous stops in Buffalo and Miami to replace O'Brien & Pettit.

I don't care if the nephew replaces John Mara as Team President. Just don't want him scouting and picking the players.

That’s all fair, I don’t disagree. But, my point is we would have all signed for this back in December. I haven’t liked Mara’s words either, but I’m pleased with the overhaul we’ve seen. I can’t argue Abrams and the “promotion” he got. He should be gone too no doubt.
