But, imo - he was the best OL that was made for the Giants. We have Andrew Thomas at LT. Neal is going to make a GREAT RT on the line imo.
If we drafted Icky ...maybe he is unhappy because he wants to play LT?
So, not only did the Giants get a great talent at a position they dearly need ... but, a great fit for their OL.
We will see.
After have a few days - weeks ... thinking about the draft. I love Neal. Rather have him over Ekwonu at this point. History may prove me wrong but, that is what I feel at this point.
I think Icky has the most potential but as rookies Neal will be the best of the OL taken in round 1 not only due to his Alabama pedigree but due to his physical ability and desire to be a player in this league.
Look, if OT is solid this year and the interior is improved we are going places for sure! We will see execution and consistency as the OL develops.
I am actually hoping both early OL's START the season because that means we had a tremendous draft to build on. I also have high hopes that Peart is ready by game 3 of pre-season and gets enough snaps to show he can be a swing tackle. Peart has the physical tools but whispers were he lacked the desire to be a better player as he doesn't love football. You need solid, hard-working youth to develop around and build team synergies.
The best RT we've had in the past five years was Mike Remmers. How sad is that?
The thing I like best about Neal is his versatility, and although I like Andrew Thomas, if his ankle continues to be an issue we may have to move on from him at some point and shift Neal over to LT. I do hope that never happens, though.
I have zero faith in Matt Peart, and wouldn't be surprised if he's cut, although they may keep him around for another year. I have much more faith in Gono and a couple of the new guys.
Neal was the safe bet over Icky whose pass protect isn't as developed

Sy'56 had him pegged as a guy Gettleman would draft because of his long arms, and he was absolutely right. He couldn't even beat out Nate Solder, who was completely cooked. The Giants have got to stop depending on players who have shown themselves to be undependable. Seems like Schoen is going that route, which is fine with me.

Agreed. If he’s healthy and doesn’t prove he really wants to play and show big improvement from the new coaching, I’d be surprised if he actually makes the team.
I think Shoen bringing in and drafting so many additions to the OL has to send a clear signal to Peart and the other returning OL, they better step up or they’re gone.
Neal is and will prove to be a very good RT. I have watched enough OL analyst who have pointed out as good as he has played at LT the tape at RT is even better. I now believe the Giants have their bookends. Where I still have concerns is at Guard and Center. The Giants are bringing in bodies. Now can they find at least three quality starters out of these bodies

It was a complete shocker when it became apparent that Peart wasn't going to start ahead of the fully cooked Solder, mind boggling. And when the OL coach(es) began the loud whispers about his desire, it made it worse.
The kid looked ok in his early starts in his rookie season. Is there some hint the injuries weren't bona fide? I am hoping that there was some other staff clusterf**k going on here to make sense of it all, but that is a slender reed on which to cling to hope.
The point that a bad offensive line is almost impossible to overcome and that it has a domino negative impact on the team
I feel confident the offense line has been improved significantly which leads me to expect much more success for this team than many or most.
Will not be surprised if they contend for the NFC East title
I tend to agree that the team will be better. I don’t think a division title, but I’m hoping to avoid a slow start for the first time since 2016. It’s been hard considering the starts for this team:
2017: 1-7
2018: 1-7
2019: 2-6
2020: 1-7
2021: 2-6
That is a horrific stretch. I think the Giants will see a bump from Daboll/Kafka and hopefully an improved OL. I also think with a more favorable schedule (at least on paper), the Giants are more likely to avoid the horrific start this year.
RE: Raving is a good description of what Simms does.
Of course, saying Neal is going to be great isn't much of a stretch. He should be pro bowl caliber at some point.
Could be this year and since he was the addition to the line in the spotlight and if there is a big improvement it might be perceived as the sole reason thus giving him the popularity based accomplishment. Now all-pro could take some time but I’m confident he will be sooner than later

Run the ball
protect the passer
stop the run
rush the passer
good teams do all 4. We couldn't do any of them last year. I'm hopeful Thibs and Neal fix pass rush and pass protection respectively, but the other two are still major question marks.

Pearts heart doesn’t seem in it, easily confused on stunts, slow feet, and had a coach imply he’s dumber than a box….. Any way, maybe Bobby Johnson can do something, or else he doesn’t make it to the first August camp date.
Peart - problem may be the concept of "swing tackle"
Before discarding him, he probably s/b tried strictly as a RT, with the starting RT (Neal) also being the swing tackle. It is not like this has never been done before.
Rumors are that Peart is not the swiftest mental processor. Some, not all, can overcome this by thorough mental preparation and simplified focus. Worst thing you can do is overload with concepts.

I agree. He is the best fit for the Giants RT at this time. Thomas and Neal will give Jones protection he's never had before from the sides. We're still not sure about the middle. Once that's solidified it's on Jones to prove he is the goods.

Brick ... I think if Jones has time and gets comfortable back there he will restablish his accuracy and reclaim his rookie nickname (dannydimes) ... but, we will see.
I really am confident that we will find one of our long term guards from this years draft/UDFAs/and the pure free agents we signed. Might take 1 more draft to get the complete line together.
I'm also happy with the pick, but I'm wondering how long it will take
him to adjust to the nfl. It seemed to take Thomas a season, although he was improving during his rookie year. Some players take longer than that. Rashawn Slater, on the other hand, had a great rookie season.

The changes to the OL should help running the ball significantly.
Thomas and Neal as bookend tackles, Feliciano as C and Glowinski as RG. LG is up for grabs (Lemieux, Garcia, Ezeudu) and the competition between them will be a good thing.
As an OL, that is miles better than the garbage we threw out there last season.
