Why? Were you hoping to repurpose an old Arrington jersey?

He wears 5. He was drafted 5th. If he wanted to pony up for #5, why would anyone hope that he wears a number other than the one he wants?

Didn’t KT mention that Gano had 5 because that’s how many kids he has? Looks like Mr. (and Mrs.) Gano have some work to do.

Happy for KT. He seems like a religious kid and used the word “manifest” a lot when it came to coming to the Giants. You could tell being drafted at #5 added some sort of extra meaning for him. Hope he racks up 5 sacks in his first start.

I think 55 is better for a LB. It's a personal preference.

Meh, it was a temporary number scheme that the NFL insisted upon that happens to land within the foundation of your football memory.

If you saw a QB wearing #42 right now or a lineman wearing #7, you'd probably think it was insane. But those numbers are retired for players who don't fit the position/number framework we grew up with.

BFD.

Why does Gano have to give up his number for a kid that is just starting his career? Gano is 12 year vet and one of the better players on the team, he should be compensated for giving up his number.

A) he doesn't HAVE to give up his number. He got paid more for his number than most people made the past two years combined.

B) It was always a throwaway number for him anyway; he has never worn the same number at two consecutive teams.

I'm 41 I don't care what the NFL "insists" on I just liked the number 55 but if the kid wanted 5 then I really don't care about it. You're making it out like I'm annoyed he picked the same number he had in college.

He definitely doesn't have to. It's not like he "earned" the number or paid someone else to get it. It reminds me of changing seats on an airplane so two friends can sit together. No one HAS to do it, but it's dick if you don't. And holding out for $250K or whatever is a bad look. It's not criminal or anything, but just kind of a a-hole move.

It’s HIS number. Who gives a shit if he hasn’t worn it elsewhere. And you’re right he doesn’t have to give it up, but he did because he was compensated for it. Nothing wrong with what he did.

I guess there weren't a lot of Gano jerseys in the stores...

"In order for an NFL player to change his number for the upcoming season, he must buy out the existing inventory of retail-ready NFL jerseys; Meaning, any jersey ready to be sold at a Dick's Sporting Goods or Nike Store has to be purchased by the player.

Dalvin Cook, who wanted to change his number for the upcoming NFL season, was tasked to pay $1.5 million, the price of the remaining in-stock jerseys across the country. That number deterred Cook from wanting to change from his No. 33, but he's expected to change for the 2022 NFL season."

Feagles had #10 when Eli was drafted and Eli paid for a vacation for Feagles and his family for the number. Feagles switched to 17 and themn Plaxico wanted it. Plaxico agreed to pay for renovations for Jeff feagles home in exchange for the number, but never paid.

Why? The hatred of the college football numeric scheme is a very "GET OFF MY LAWN" situation.

There are 100 numbers available to players before retired digits enter the equation. 30 of those numbers are designated as ineligible (50-79), in terms of role on the field. Every remaining number is eligible, and subject to roster listing nonsense.

Cordarralle Patterson, for example, has worn a number in the 80's for his entire career. He began as a WR, but is effectively a RB now. Brad Van Pelt was allowed to wear his collegiate number 10 because he was fictitiously listed on the roster as the backup kicker.

What's the harm?
I like it.

Why? Because you would have preferred it?

Anyone who has ever played football knows what it means to wear *YOUR* number.

I wore 58 in football and 48 in lacrosse. And when I stepped up to varsity football my sophomore year in HS, 58 was assigned to one of the backup seniors who had actually worn 50 the year before, and that was the number I was given, so we just traded jerseys and I bought him a papa rellena and two empanadas to make it fair.

Not quite $250k, but probably equivalent given my allowance at the time.

That applies to every sport. It’s superstitious and I think that there shouldn’t be any regulations when it comes to Jersey numbers but I really don’t care enough either way.

So you can acknowledge that and still have a preferred number for some other grown man? He's allowed to wear #5 under the new NFL rules, but you wanted to envision him as #55. Send me your address and I'll send you my crusty old Arrington jersey. You can throw a new nameplate on it and you'll be giddy.

Orrrrrrrr... and this is wild... it's going to allow players to wear the numbers they want, the same as they have at every level of football in their lives and even within the same numbering system that was allowed in the NFL prior to the merger.

So long as teams continue to retire numbers (when rings of honor and other demonstrable accolades exist), increasing numerical flexibility is going to be necessary, and if so, why not throw a bone to the players to allow them to wear their preferred numbers? It's literally just an identification coding system.

I have a bunch, and no shame in any of them, including the eBay Arrington. I have an LT, a Burt (original sand-knit), a Tuck, a Cruz, a Bradshaw, Eli in every color (including red), plus black, and that pesky Arrington jersey.

Don't even get me started on my hockey jerseys - there's at least twice as many of them. They're like sweatshirts - perfect for half the year and good with shorts or jeans.
