It would leave a really bad lasting impression for this season if they go out without a fight tonight. Win this game and show some pride. I can accept a first round loss. But the effort last game was simply unacceptable.
but I think we are shot. We seemed lost and I have no reason to believe it will change just because it is two days later and we switched ice. The last 5 of 6 periods has been disgraceful (maybe 4 of 6 as period 1 in game 4 wasn't that bad).

we you start seeing so many goals being deflected in front for goals it tells you that you are not selling out enough to win these games. These are playoff games you have to fight not give up goals. No one cares how many time you beat this team in the regular season, you need to win every period tonight. If they do not want to do what it takes to win they will get what they deserve. Get it back to Pittsburgh and who knows what happens. One period at a time.
I think this just shoot anything on net is a dumb idea. It really hasn’t Worked. As Herb Brooks would say “play your game” and then you will see why he is an AHLer
I was talking with my dad about the last two games
Pens were really good at having at least on guy, and sometimes two screening our goalie. They scored a bunch against us this way where they create the "chaos" in front of the net. a lot of their goals we didn't even have a body in the crease.
Rangers seem to struggle creating the chaos in front of the net for whatever reason....Size?

Yes! What’s the kind of point dumping the puck on net if nobody is going to be there to bang it home. It doesn’t even look like we are trying to set up in front of the net
So many absolute no shows tonight it's hard to believe
Panarin invisible, Zibanejad and Kreider only visible for negative plays, Trouba an absolute nightmare. Strome and Copp nowhere to be found. Oh and it's time for some guys on this board to admit Lindgren is more important to this team than he gets credit for. Whether he should be or not is a different issue.

Lindgren is our top-pair LD. Of course he's important to this team. But like you said, that is indeed an issue that will need to be addressed in the offseason.
They've all had good stretches during the season, but they've really had it all going on together these past few games. Hope they get a chance to keep it going into next week.
not sure what game some of you are watching based on some of the comments.
Trouba was the unsung hero of that game.
On the ice for 4 of the 5 Rangers goals (I don't think he was on for the Chytil goal) put the hit on Crosby to knock him out of the game, double shifts when Lindgren needs a shift off playing the off-hand D with Fox (to avoid Nemeth having to play a regular shift) and hits everything in sight.
I love Lafreniere and hated to see the NYR fans opinions of him much of this season, but if it's up to me (it's not lol) Trouba is the captain of that team.

He couldn't move Crosby out of the crease on the first goal.Sid kinda ducked under his arm and clearly distracted Igor.

I'm not saying he was perfect of course he wasn't, but if you watch this goal and feel like Trouba not clearing Crosby out distracted Igor then it seems like you are searching for things to blame on Trouba. Igor was slow getting to the post. link - ( New Window )

Yeah, there's a lot of claiming that it was an elbow to the head, but if you watch the slo-mo it was more like the upper arm. Trouba didn't run him, didn't leave his feet, and was trying to poke the puck away. His stick tripped Cosby up a bit which is what made it look worse.
Brett, it conjured his play in the Summer 2019 (?) World Juniors when he owned the puck, so much stronger as an 18 year old than most of his opponents.
Their three worst forward tonight, by a mile, were Zibanejad, Kreider, and Vatrano. They've been invisible for most of the series.
If you sub Panarin for Vatrano, I would agree. 3 points in Game 2 win and what would have been a big goal in Game 3 before the Rangers came apart. Pretty instrumental in Chytil's game winner tonight.
getting the valuable playoff experience I talked about, even if the Rangers lose on Friday. Shesterkin also hasnt been through this before
The salary cap issues will make it difficult, but the team clearly needs a top pair LD and at least one center like McTavish who can win draws when you need to
Kinda disappointed in Copp and Vatrano so far after their great post-trade performances
Rangers have been brutal there. Tough to win losing all the important draws
It was ugly. 67% for the Pens.
Chytil 25%, Strome 29%, Mika 33%.
IDK why they don't just let Copp take face-offs. The guy is a career 52% FO. For Winnipeg this year, he was at 54%. Let him take the face-offs over Strome.
one person's interpretation of what's happening on the ice and could be completely wrong? Kinda like the person here blaming Trouba for the first goal? Or blaming Igor for countless goals that were deflections and wide open tap ins?
Its like that expected goals for and against stuff. Expected by whom?
The kid line is just bringing it. Laf has been so impressive on the big stage. I love what I'm seeing from him.
When we were down 2-0, I couldn't believe we were just going to roll over and die. Then game the 3 goal avalanche, and it was like all of a sudden, they woke up and snapped out of it.
Really hope we can get Motte back tomorrow. I feel like Panarin is more hurt than has been let on.. he hasn't really looked like himself to me.
Ryan Lindgren is such a tough SOB. I say this often, but he reminds me so much of young Danny G. His presence makes such a difference. We needed him.
Is playing like something is physically wrong. Obviously, not sure if that’s the case. Rangers better hope that Trouba doesn’t get suspended. There have been a lot worse that have been overlooked. But anytime an “elbow” to the head …

Could be. I've noticed that he's not hammering people into the boards on the forecheck like he usually does.
I don't like Panarin's game. He's content to float around the perimeter and he continues to pass on open shots.
Unfortunately, it's injury-hiding season more than ever now in the NHL. Almost impossible to know who is hurt and how badly. I am positive most of these guys are banged up and playing through stuff.
The young guns are carrying us.
Mika has looked really lost at a lot of points in this series, too.
Big, physical, D, take longer to acclimate to the NHL than a puck mover because their game is more about timing, gap control, strength, physicality etc. and that game is built on confidence. A fraction of a second too late or even a slight hesitation and you see the difference between a bad pinch leading to an odd man rush or a crippling hit. and your 18-21 year old body and younger league experience doesn't always translate exactly. so it takes some adjustment. The second Pens goal you can see (started by a late change it seemed) Schneider was unsure if he should take the body or just shade the forward with the puck and he hesitated only slightly. You saw what happened.
So, for where Schneider is today I am impressed. He will only get better and looks like one day be a top pair D.

I nearly screamed last night with that 4 ON 1 break he takes a wrist shot from 8-10 feet out, that should have been a TAP IN goal for someone.
Impossible not to think about Kreider's/Zib's painfully slow starts this season and last and disappearances for stretches in season; they've 'chosen' to do those disappearing acts at worst possible time--where is their 'will', as Henrik was emphasizing in the post game?
Watching faceoffs carefully, Zibanejad isn't even coming close; he's late and soft.
Did not like tone of Kreider's post-game interview, so complacent, as if his and his line's play have really contributed to last night; well it has contributed to where NYR are in the Series. I would have liked to hear more humility and ownership of need to do better.
Also cringe at Panarin's play: his lack of two-way play/toughness is painted in sharp relief in more tighter, more physical SCP. But part of his ineffectiveness imo is his centerman, whose play in this Series I would rate at ~ 4th line quality; C's rate of conversion of mid- and high chance ops has got to be very low. That line is poorly constructed. Even if you put Copp at C--and he is the only guy who has a decent % of faceoff wins to my naked eye, incl. vs Crosby); and he is a willing, two-way player, not overly physical, but positionally responsible--that line needed a banger/scoring winger to balance. Didn't we have one of those on that line, once?
Some of the loudest voices here just want to sell Lindgren down the river, for nothing. Maybe he's not first pair, but he's among the team's guttiest players, short supply of that. And wtf with Fox' reads and judgments again?
Thought Braun a pretty distinct improvement over Drury's other acquisition.
From a team perspective, can they play a solid road game? Can they stay composed in a hostile environment? It's not like they were bad road team this year, they won 25 games away from MSG. But the stakes are totally different now.
The wheels seem to fall off when the Pens exert pressure, the crowd is amped and something bad happens and then it just all seems to roll down hill from there. Guys get panicky, they are either out of position or just going through the motions and standing around. Like they aren't trusting their instincts.
They battled back in Game 3 after the terrible first period, to tie it. But Game 4 they just completely became unglued in the second period.
this team is they don't respond well to aggressive forechecking teams that give you no space. Note they got back into the game when Pittsburgh decided to sit back more and clog up the neutral zone. The struggle mightily versus Carolina and their forecheck and it seems Pittsburgh is doing their best to emulate that.

I agree with this, but I don't know any team who handles aggressive forechecks well. The key is to be patient and weather the storm. Not many teams can sustain an aggressive forecheck for long and the Pens just don't have young legs.
I don't mean to jinx anything but I feel like the Rangers have the Pens in a good spot. The Rangers have forced a game 6 with little to no production from their top 6. And with Crosby a question mark, I see a game 7 in the Garden and that would be fun.
any word on whether there will. be a discipline hearing for Troubs
the whole Pittsburgh narrative that he intentionally elbowed him is so stupid. He literally went to go poke the puck away from Crosby. But, because Pittsburgh is whining, and its Crosby I am irrationally concerned. Should be absolutely no discipline.

Not yet. We should be hearing from Parros soon. Obviously it would be a big loss if Trouba is suspended.
Plenty of finesse. That works well in the regular season when teams are not close checking. I think it's fair to say this team lacks the one or two guys who rise-up during the playoffs. This team needs one of those guys... someone like Esa Tikkanen.
Dylan’s comments last year will not exactly help the Rangers cause. When you factor in that it was Crosby who got hurt, I would not be surprised to hear suspension. I hope I’m wrong. But. Be very concerned
But I can't believe there will be any discipline at all for that. Trouba didn't take a run at him. Didn't leave his feet. Despite what was claimed last night, it wasn't even an elbow at all. The contact was made with Trouba's upper arm/shoulder on Crosby's chest and his head snapped back like whiplash.
Probably could have been called a tripping minor, but that's it.
1. No one reacted to the hit real-time or thought it was dirty until they realized Crosby was hurt.
2. Trouba was playing the puck, not head-hunting, as evidenced by him poke checking the puck first.
I wouldn't have whined if they called a penalty. But a suspension seems ridiculous.
Mike Rupp says:
Quote:
If both #LetsGoPens and #NYR fan bases, take off the “homer” 👓 for a moment.. Zero intent by Trouba on Crosby, an elbow did hit a player in the head though, and I believe it will be disciplined.

Rangers in 7.
The kids have arrived, you said it. Regardless of how this series ends, we're seeing Kakko, Laf, and K'Andre blossom before our eyes. That's such a huge development. That Kakko shift late where he's killing clock along the boards holding the puck from three players, what a horse he is.
And shout out to Filip Chytil. I think we've all been unsure about his future here. But he's playing the same way as the other kids. Physical, playoff style hockey. Good for him getting that goal. That line carried us back into the game
What a game. We've got a chance.
Rupp's wrong though. Watch it from all angles, in slo mo
how much you Rangers fans think the league likes/favors Crosby, they would much rather a) have a game 7 and b) have the Rangers advance than the Pens. NY team advancing in the playoffs is far more valuable to the league than Crosby advancing.
They will not look for reasons to suspend Trouba (again IMO).
BTW, they're obviously going to take a run at Trouba tomorrow with whatever muscle they have (which isn't much...actually it's nothing. They're biggest guy is that powderpuff Brian Boyle). That'll only hurt them, especially since Reaves can knock each of them into oblivion.
Brian Boyle was always willing to fight, I'll give him that much
Despite the protests of Murray Chass' doppelganger, Igor has been far from his best in the past few games. They need the Igor who drained the life out of opponents all season with impossible saves.
and Rangers fans would be bullshit everywhere if in the same series the Pens knocked out the equivalent of:
Rackell (top 6 forward)
DeSmith (#2 goalie, filling in for #1 goalie)
Dumolin (top 4 D)
Crosby (one of the best players in the world, team captain)
and it doesn't matter intent or not - people here still feel like the Kakko goal being overturned was to help Crosby or that Igor wasn't at least partly responsible for the collision with Carter.
Fans see the same concrete evidence differently based on which team you are a fan of.

I agree, and I'm hoping his 3rd period last night sparks him going forward, because he was great in the 3rd. Let's see him go into Pittsburgh and get a shutout tomorrow night.
he skated through a player who HAD THE FUCKING PUCK, kept his feet, head wasn't the principal point of contact. there really wasn't even any sandpaper in the play.
He was making a stick-on-puck attempt, and Crosby had himself in an awkward position.
It would be a stretch to call that a penalty on the ice, but absolutely fucking absurd to consider a fine or suspension.

Clearly your point about fans seeing what they want to see is spot on, but your rap sheet there is kind of silly.
It's impossible to find video of how Doumolin (injury prone to begin with) and DeSmith got hurt...nor have I seen any credible suggestion or evidence that it was from any kind of dirty/late or even physical play from the NYR.
If we are including crap like that...let's throw Goodrow and Lindgren on the Pens tab. Carter/Igor situation is about on par with the awkward Crosby injury.
So really we are talking about a physical play of Lindgren on Rakell where he went too high and got penalized accordingly. It was clean enough that the refs downgraded it given the chance to review it on the spot.
You have multiple people on here calling Jeff Carter a "piece of shit" for the Igor collision and the guy is closer to lady byng than he is to a "marchand" or bemoaning the Pens fans calling for discipline - if it were reversed my point is Rangers fans would be acting the same.
probably not the right thread to bring it up on though, lol

spot on.
I loved Valiquette's crack about the Crosby dive after the faceoff with Zibanajed, the he was "hit by a sniper" from upper deck LOL.
Fans only see what they want to see. We complain about the penalties that Pens get away with and ignore the ones that Rangers get away with. Refs have impossible job.
Having said that I was very concerned that Trouba hit would be penalized by Parros.
Igor needs to come up big in Pittsburgh and shut them down

I loved Valiquette's crack about the Crosby dive after the faceoff with Zibanajed, the he was "hit by a sniper" from upper deck LOL.
The stick did clip his helmet so his initial reaction was genuine IMO, but then he stayed down on the ice afterwards because the Rangers had the puck 🤣
Sid was skating free in front of the net as he has done all series and he was not looking around like they teach you in junior high school.Instead, he was watching the puck.
So, he did not see Trouba coming until the last second. Even then he managed to avoid the brunt of the hit by turning his should and TRouba did not drive into him as he easily could have.
I don't think it was even that hard of a hit. It just forced him down in an awkward, twisted motion.
So, no way in hell was that a dirty hit. But because its Crosby, it gets magnified. If dryden Hunt took a hit like that, no one would even mention it (except maybe Anakim :)))

The thing about that play is Trouba absolutely could have leveled Crosby. He had him lined up, but he went for the puck and they collided awkwardly.
he's way too streaky to be the #1 center on a cup contending team in my view. Maybe streaky isn't the right word, whatever you want to call it, he aint it. He's obviously productive and prolific, but I just can't shake the feeling that we need a better front line center/presence to take the next step.
PS i have no problem signing him long term like the Rangers did. They had little choice.
Wouldn't hurt to have a big night on friday there Mika. You're the #1 center here. Go out and own that game.
Zib has been the biggest disappointment in this series
Had a fantastic year. Was probably top 5 in terms of 2 way centers. That being said, he hasn’t been good in this series. If he doesn’t elevate his game tomorrow, there probably won’t be a game 7. Need him to step up big time.

My restraining order doesn't mention it.
DeAngelo: 8 points in 5 playoff games
Buchnevich - 4 points in 5 playoff games
I was really surprised the Rangers didn't look to re-acquire Miller. he'd be a perfect fit as 2C or even 1C.
54% on the dots, 100 points, not afraid to hit, has leadership qualities.
Good season though.

I thought they did but either the asking price was too high or Vancouver wasn't willing to move him since they had a nice run under Boudreau.

Just kidding they are running with 7 D.
Give me players who will care
Give me players who will care
This defense is atrocious right now. Standing, chasing, no positional discipline. Miller looked like he was on a string during that goal sequence
The offensive structure is nowhere to be found.
No one crashing the net, no bodies in front.
I see now that it wasn't Nemeth. Kreider and Trouba committed the offenses. Nemeth has zero ice time.
Rangers seem to struggle creating the chaos in front of the net for whatever reason....Size?

Horrible
Horrible
Chytil can’t get the shot on goal and Fox does something ridiculous.
Pathetic
Horrible
Lots of blame on that one, but it started when Chytil shot the puck into Letang's pads (at least I think it was Letang who blocked it).
the fact Letang blocked the shot and scored the goal with no NYR player picking him up is about effort.
If you're talking about the second goal Trouba was not on the ice
Which goal? He wasn't on the ice for the second goal and the first one clearly was not on Trouba.
Sometimes I feel like fans complain about him because he gets paid a lot.
with Trouba on LD or was that just a late change?
Getting two is even nicer.
Not now

He’s got the fortitude to do it.
19 ES goals is pretty good. Give him PP time and he scores 30 next year.
Also had two 5 on 3's and gotten the call on 3 reviews.
Oh, that's a shame
Well, he has not been hit in this series. And basically he has been a lot more physical with the Rangers than they have been with him.
Brilliant, Krieder. Really brilliant.
That's one huge positive
Definitely been the bright spot
I agree. But getting the only penalty in a playoff scrum is nonsense
He really is
fits in well there

Meaning the faceoff after the offsides.
Whether it's Crosby or your own......LOL
Laf looks great.
So Nemeth could have a chance at redemption
Laf looks great.
Really looking forward to seeing those guys start to really maximize their talent in the future
Agree with all of you, Laf, Kakko and Chytil growing up before our eyes. Played some great hockey when it counted most

But after that, he did play a good game.
Agreed with pj on Trouba. Made a lot of great defensive plays, scored that goal, etc.
Laf looks great.
I think the light goes on for both of them next year.
50+ goals between them at a minimum

He couldn't move Crosby out of the crease on the first goal.Sid kinda ducked under his arm and clearly distracted Igor.
But after that, he did play a good game.
I'm not saying he was perfect of course he wasn't, but if you watch this goal and feel like Trouba not clearing Crosby out distracted Igor then it seems like you are searching for things to blame on Trouba. Igor was slow getting to the post.

39-19.
It was ugly. 67% for the Pens.
Chytil 25%, Strome 29%, Mika 33%.

not sure what game some of you are watching based on some of the comments.
Trouba was the unsung hero of that game.

That was Igor's fault more than anyone IMO
I did t think so after watching the tape.
Ps. Agree that Ranger fans are being way too critical of Trouba.

Looked like a clean hit to me
Zibanejad has been brutal on both ends of the ice. He should be roasting this scrub in net.
Brett, it conjured his play in the Summer 2019 (?) World Juniors when he owned the puck, so much stronger as an 18 year old than most of his opponents.
The salary cap issues will make it difficult, but the team clearly needs a top pair LD and at least one center like McTavish who can win draws when you need to
Kinda disappointed in Copp and Vatrano so far after their great post-trade performances

IDK why they don't just let Copp take face-offs. The guy is a career 52% FO. For Winnipeg this year, he was at 54%. Let him take the face-offs over Strome.
Its like that expected goals for and against stuff. Expected by whom?

Of course they are. Biggest fucking cry baby fan base in any sport.
The hit on Tyler Motte by some scrub from the Pens Scranton farm team was WAY more intentional than this.
Naturally, I have concern that Trouba could be suspended between now and tomorrow.
My sterling prediction spurred them on! :-)
Agree with you guys about Laf, Kakko. The kid line is playing the most "playoff style" hockey.
Rangers in 7.
Could be. I've noticed that he's not hammering people into the boards on the forecheck like he usually does.
I don't like Panarin's game. He's content to float around the perimeter and he continues to pass on open shots.
The young guns are carrying us.
Mika has looked really lost at a lot of points in this series, too.
Schneider looks much better to me than that data suggests. Everyone else looks roughly right.

Is playing like something is physically wrong. Obviously, not sure if that’s the case. Rangers better hope that Trouba doesn’t get suspended. There have been a lot worse that have been overlooked. But anytime an “elbow” to the head …

I nearly screamed last night with that 4 ON 1 break he takes a wrist shot from 8-10 feet out, that should have been a TAP IN goal for someone.
Have to be a great road team on Friday.
Not yet. We should be hearing from Parros soon. Obviously it would be a big loss if Trouba is suspended.
1 playoff game = 5 regular season games, so I doubt that play warrants any suspension much less 5 regular season games.
Darnell Nurse got one game for a head butt.
Marchand, with his track record, got a fine for two-handing Kochetkov (Canes goalie).
on no planet is a suspension worthy here. I don't even think it's a fine.

The kids have arrived, you said it. Regardless of how this series ends, we're seeing Kakko, Laf, and K'Andre blossom before our eyes. That's such a huge development. That Kakko shift late where he's killing clock along the boards holding the puck from three players, what a horse he is.
And shout out to Filip Chytil. I think we've all been unsure about his future here. But he's playing the same way as the other kids. Physical, playoff style hockey. Good for him getting that goal. That line carried us back into the game
What a game. We've got a chance.

They will not look for reasons to suspend Trouba (again IMO).
And Pittsburgh riots in 3, 2, 1...
BTW, they're obviously going to take a run at Trouba tomorrow with whatever muscle they have (which isn't much...actually it's nothing. They're biggest guy is that powderpuff Brian Boyle). That'll only hurt them, especially since Reaves can knock each of them into oblivion.
To correct this, Frank Seravalli is actually the one who broke it, Shayna commented on it.
He was making a stick-on-puck attempt, and Crosby had himself in an awkward position.
It would be a stretch to call that a penalty on the ice, but absolutely fucking absurd to consider a fine or suspension.
they got it right.

Sounds like playoff hockey to me.

Having said that I was very concerned that Trouba hit would be penalized by Parros.
Igor needs to come up big in Pittsburgh and shut them down

that's fair. I definitely welcome your perspective and participation in these threads. hope you didn't take that the wrong way.
The stick did clip his helmet so his initial reaction was genuine IMO, but then he stayed down on the ice afterwards because the Rangers had the puck 🤣
Move along and buckle in for game 6.
Brett you need to start the thread for tomorrow's game.

I got you, Costy.
Would Nemeth actually be scratched or will he get the Stu Bickel (or in your words, the Stubickle) experience again.
Seems like if Lindgren can go next game they'd go back to 6 and 12, no?
What am I missing on how Motte impacts Nemeth?

So they're going to skip the hearing and go straight to execution at dawn?

PS i have no problem signing him long term like the Rangers did. They had little choice.
Wouldn't hurt to have a big night on friday there Mika. You're the #1 center here. Go out and own that game.
As to the Crosby nonsense, it's the playoffs there Syd. Keep your fucking head up.
Remember Scott Stevens cracking skulls for a decade during the spring. Trouba's hit was child's play compared to that.
I’d settle for him winning 50% of the off and def zone face offs.
He looks utterly lost. I don't understand it. We need so much more from him.
Motte's coming back from a hit similar to Crosby's, no?

I believe Motte's injury was a broke collarbone.
