NFT: imo The Most Underrated Food ... has to be Pho

pho places seem as numerous as ramen or thai? all 3 have probably eclipsed chinese take out or are at least comparable in numbers?

I'd wager its one of the most popular ethnic foods in America. You can get (surprisingly decent) pho in the cafeteria of the hospital I work in.

For a heartier meal banh mi is also dope af.

I just wish it was pronounced like it's spelled.

Underrated?

Everyone always raves about it. It'd always pop up on my Facebook feed around 2014 or so because it was the big thing to have. I never go on there but those people who'd boast about it ... are long gone off my friends list lol

Next time at a good Pho place try their Bánh mì (Sandwich) it will blow your mind

The people who have had it seem to enjoy it. It's just that a pretty small percentage of the population eat Thai/Vietnamese food so it's underappreciated. I've just had it once at a restaurant and liked it.

It's not just the protein. It's everything else, especially in the yolks.

So were all of the soups I used to eat for lunch in NYC when noodle shops were popping up all over the place. So was my Mom's lentil soup she used to make with bulk Italian sausage. So was the menudo I used to get at this little hole-in-the-wall place in Austin, TX, years ago. Soup is still soup, whether you consider it meal or not. I like Pho. I like my "niece's" Laotian variation. But it's still just soup.

Too bad. My mother was a waitress and she told me to never even think about eating soup in a restaurant. Since then, the only soup I'll eat is home made. Oh well.

but i don't care for soups when i go out to eat. Ramen, Pho, etc just doesn't do it for me. Tastes fine, but being hot and bloated isn't my cup of tea. Would rather get a bunch of other Vietnamese dishes.

And its definitely soup which can be part of or all of a meal. The portion size dictates that.

love me some Pho. Doubt its underrated.

Viet food is great, all the various wraps and rice noodles.

Re Banh mi, there is a place in Elmhurst called Joju, they have tremendous sandwiches and they've incorporated fusion with other (Bulgogi Banh mi with runny egg) my god its good.

all that much when thinking of going or ordering out.

I figure they're just not for me - someone who is pretty set in my food ways at my age - but the "put a runny egg on it" trend is one I 100% support and I hope it never ends.

is that you wind up lighyly blanching the vegetables like coriander, basil, onion, green onion and sprouts. Retaining their crispness and bite.

Depends on the area I guess. I live it, but few of friends eat it and even fewer people at work. Same with ramen. Most people think I'm just eating Cup noodles.
