NFT: Black Crowes Southern Harmony turns 30 today

Steve L : 5/12/2022 10:30 pm
I know there’s a lot of Crowes and music fans here. This is a life changing album for me. It solidified the Crowes as an amazing band and they became one of my all time faves. The band and the album. I saw them four times on this tour.

I still love this band and album.
Probably

A Top 5 album for me. Some critic pointed out that it came out amid all the hair bands, faux metal, etc., but side 2 blew ‘em all away effortlessly. It’s just great.
Agreed

I remember the day that came out. We skipped school, got some beers and cranked it all day. I’ve seen them 25 or so times since then. Not recently though.

Did the same thing. Last time I saw them was 2017 or so. Still awesome. I just love this band. Tedeschi Trucks has helped carry the torch.
They were pretty good before that record

But this was their magical record.
Such a good album

Still remember hearing Black Moon Creeping at 10 years old at my cousins house and just being absolutely floored. I mean just wide eyed and jaw dropped. One of my first, and best, music memories.
I wish I saw them with Jimmy Page

I saw that at the Worcester Centrum. The only time I’ve ever been to a rock concert and the crowd was chanting “Yankees Suck” between songs. Incredible show though. Best I ever saw them was By Your Side tour. Orpheum theater in Boston.

Has anybody seen them on this current Money Maker tour?

I saw Page/Crowes in NC. One of the best shows I ever saw.

As for this tour, I have not. I hear they’re great. But I hate when bands play an album start to finish which is what they’re doing with Moneymaker. When bands celebrate an album anniversary, I wish they would just play the set list from that tour instead of the whole album. You’d hear some great stuff.

That album...

...is at least partially responsible for my tinnitus. :)

Was a staple in my 90's multi-disc CD player.

If you feel like a riot then don't you deny it!
What an amazing album

I bought it the day it came out at the record store. It’s still getting cranked through my ears regularly. My Morning Song is just incredible. The build up gives me chills. Thorn in my Pride? I’ve seen them live over 50 times in the last 30 years. I’m sad that I missed them on the new tour. I’ll try to catch them this summer. Makes me nostalgic every time I hear them. Amorica was the next great chapter…

Definitely My Morning Song! One Of my all time favorites. That and Hotel Illness.

They do sound good from what I see on YouTube. This covers thing they put out isn’t bad either. Supposedly new music coming. We’ll see.

Bad Luck Blue Eyes Goodbye. Two of my favs.

Great album!
This was one of those albums that was always on...

...no matter where you were. It was playing in every car and every party. You knew every song even if you didn't own the album.

High as the Moon tour that followed the album. It was their first headline tour. Saw them at the Beacon Theater. They opened with No Speak No Slave and it was just epic. The lights, the stage, it was all awesome. Here is how it opened….

I personally like Amorica just slightly more, but I would agree that Southern... is their best and probably one of the best straightahead Rock albums ever made.

Saw them in Portland ME on that tour.

Cumberland County Civic Center. Yep, that album and that show solidified the Crowes as one of my favorite post-70s bands. Seen them many times since, but that first show was the most memorable.

Ditto in Buffalo. What a great opening number.
My High School Friend is their new drummer

My old friend Brian is a longtime session drummer, has toured with some semi-big bands, but last year got the gig to be the new drummer for Black Crowes. Opportunity of a lifetime for him, and he's having a blast.
Huh
Greg from LI : 5/13/2022 3:53 pm : link
Had no idea there were so many people that into the Black Crowes
The Crowes can still rock it!

I went to a show last year in Charlotte they were great. Chris Robinson has some lungs for sure.....would love to see CRB if they ever come around my area....It's also a bucket list show me.
one of my more vivid memories about this album
santacruzom : 5/13/2022 4:42 pm : link
is how this was around the era when so many of my friends were losing their minds about all these grunge singers like Eddie Vedder and Chris Cornell, and I couldn't believe how I was the seemingly the only one who thought Chris Robinson was way better than all of them.

Lots of infighting. Read Steve Gorman's book about the band.
