Players who are surprisingly still here

Eric from BBI : Admin : 5/14/2022 7:07 pm
C.J. Board - journeyman who has been on five NFL teams and was re-signed by the Giants in March

Collin Johnson - claimed off of waivers from the Jaguars in September. Played, but didn't show that much.

David Sills - Re-signed in March. He's been hanging around here for three years with not much to show for it. Did spend some time with Daboll in Buffalo.

Alex Bachman - Re-signed in January before Schoen/Daboll were hired. Also been hanging around for three years with not much to show for it.

Travis Toivonen - Cut by Seattle in August 2021. Spent a couple of stints on the NYG practice squad. Also re-signed in January 2022 before Daboll/Schoen were hired.

Trent Harris - Another re-signed in January before Schoen/Daboll/Martindale were hired. The Giants are his third team and he's been a fringe NFL player who has spent most of his time on the Practice Squad of the Giants.

Justin Hilliard - Claimed off of waivers in September; tore his Achilles’ in October.

T.J. Brunson - Spent most of his rookie year in 2020 on the inactive list. Tore his ACL in August 2021.

Somewhat surprised Slayton is still on the roster. I thought we'd have moved him, but I guess we didn't get a good enough offer. I don't see him sticking around long though.

He's still the only speed outside deep threat. It wouldn't be surprising if he is cut/traded because of his drops plus cap impact, but I could see this new regime giving him one more shot.

Or more cuts may come soon to sign UDFAs or tryout players....

This "fodder" has been around a while. I thought they would drop some of these guys for UDFAs.

don't get why the Giants were re-signing guys in January before the new GM was hired.
Some injured players may only be here until they can pass a physical.
Big Blue Blogger : 5/14/2022 7:21 pm : link
In their dire cap situation, the Giants might have to be rather cold-blooded about injury settlements and termination pay.
Five
AcidTest : 5/14/2022 7:22 pm : link
of the eight you mentioned are WRs. I don't think more than one has a chance at the 53, and wouldn't be surprised if none make it. They are all journeymen. Right now the only locks are Golladay, Toney, and Robinson. Foster and James have a chance. Not sure about Slayton. Cutting him saves $2.5M and he's a FA next offseason, but we have so little at the position they might keep him. I bet we pick up a WR after final cuts.

It is incredible how much Slayton has regressed from his rookie season. He was a real find in '19.
I think

Board and colin johnson are pretty good. Board is nice on specials, and johnson is pretty much a poor mans golladay so if/when kenny gets hurt hes there.

Not sure what is going on with him. But the clock is clearly ticking.

I wondered about the injuries to the two linebackers. Could be the factor why, although the one ACL did happen in August. Maybe they feel they don't need the roster spots right now.
i'd put Ximines ahead of Harris on the 'why's he here?' list
Eric on Li : 5/14/2022 7:28 pm : link
someone on twitter made a comment he hasn't even touched a qb since 2019 and i don't think it was a joke.

Harris is a fringe talent but he knows where he's supposed to be and seems to know his assignments.

also i dont think many of these guys are going to be here too long. i think there are a handful of VSBs still to come.

I almost put him on the list...and would provide a little cap relief... but I put him in the Slayton category of a young guy who Martindale/new LB coach may want to evaluate first.
So we could easily
Bill in UT : 5/14/2022 7:32 pm : link
make room for 10 more new guys without really losing anything

maybe but to my eye he's never even flashed. he was an undersized guy from a lower level of competition - and he's never looked above that level.

remember some of those preseason super stars like Adewale Ojomo who at least flashed against backups? i cant even recall ximines doing that.

slayton at least has 13 touchdowns in 29 starts. except for the negative trend line that's not half bad.

What's the downside? The new GM is gonna get the guys he wants but what if you miss out on that one guy? I don't see a downside.
Besides the fact that Hilliard likely can't pass a physical
Milton : 5/14/2022 7:40 pm : link
I think he is one of our more promising players at the bottom of roster if he can ever shake the injuries. Hopefully the achilles tear was just the partial tear from college going full monty. From Boylhart...

If you’re just evaluating talent to play a position then Justin is one of the top linebackers in this draft. He might be the only pure linebacker who can play any linebacker position in any style of defense in this draft. Every team in the draft is looking for a linebacker with Justin’s size, athletic talent, and effectiveness against the run and in pass coverage. He simply is a leader and an impact player but, (and this is a big but), his injuries have limited his time on the field to impact, and that is not a good thing. You draft with the information you have in front of you at the time of the draft. The information on Justine is, BUYER BEWARE. I’m telling you if this guy had been on the field instead of in the medical tent, he is a possible 1st round talent...if he can stay healthy, he could be a pro bowl player.

Yeah I think Slayton gets a big chance this year. He is the only vertical threat we have. The other guys are more the slot type receivers, and of course Golladay is a physical receiver.
Those are some easy picks
Jay on the Island : 5/14/2022 7:48 pm : link
I am surprised that Oshane Ximines is still here. He flashed as a pass rusher during his rookie season but he was dreadful versus the run. He's regressed as a pass rusher and he is still terrible versus the run. I have no idea why he is still on the roster.
What do Schoen and Daboll say?
Chris684 : 5/14/2022 7:55 pm : link
Tough, smart and dependable?

I think while unspectacular, I’ve seen enough from Board to think he fits that mold.

I wonder about Peart's long term future here. Gates too. It does suck about Gates because it seemed like we found a diamond in the rough with him & was hoping he'd man the center position for awhile.

I'm cutting him some slack, since his last two years he played in an offense which only had QB sneaks as a viable play choice on back-to-back plays. Clearly there was a lack of imagination by the coaching staff.
Where Slayton is concerned
Dave on the UWS : 5/14/2022 8:18 pm : link
keep in mind, he did well as a rookie in a functional offense. Nothing about Garrett’s offense played to his strengths. It’s very possible he may see a revival of sorts AND bring needed speed to the field. I would t be so quick to cut him.

Kid looked like one of the rare rare later round finds almost every other team finds but the Giants find once on a while but Giants haven't in 10' years. Let's see what he can do w these guys.
Slayton

Am I not remembering correctly, or did he have trouble getting open and catching the ball last year?

I don't disagree on Board
For
Toth029 : 5/14/2022 8:37 pm : link
Slayton, it wasn't just bad scheme. His drop rate skyrocketed.

It went from 2.4% in 2019, 6.3% in 2020 and 10.3% in 2021.

Also the new guy they brought in, Robert Foster, is also a speedster. Slayton doesn't play Specials either which hurts his value.
Crowder
Archer : 5/14/2022 9:44 pm : link
If Crowder is awful.
He was arguably the worst starting linebacker in the league.

Slayton is far from the only player who regressed after his rookie year. What does that say about the coaches who have been here the last few years?
I don't care about who's still here now.
Klaatu : 5/15/2022 8:12 am : link
Half of them will be gone in a few months, but you still need to have enough bodies for camp. You can't replace everybody (as much as some would like to).

I care about who'll still be here in September, when I believe the talent level should be a little higher than we've seen in recent years, with a few exceptions like DB's.

Dave on the UWS : 5/15/2022 4:08 pm : link
to start the season (which I doubt), the. He might be cut at end of camp. That would save 4 million on the cap which could be better used.
Maybe they just want to evaluate them before making a change
Rudy5757 : 5/16/2022 8:31 am : link
We already brought in a ton of new guys, so maybe they get some slack. Plus I believe that some of these guys are guys that Schoen resigned so he must have at least seen something in them. I also assume some are just waiting to pass a physical so they can be cut outright.

Slayton probably has to really shine to make this team. His salary is his biggest obstacle at this point. Maybe they reviewed his rookie season and saw something, you cant take much away from the last 2 years.

I get the sense there will be a lot of turn and burn over the next few weeks with mini camps. Everyone who isnt a draft pick better be on their toes.
Toney
bronxct1 : 5/16/2022 10:42 am : link
Toney is probably going to play a lot outside this year and is just as much of a deep threat as Slayton. I think Slayton is way down the depth chart to start the year and is not going to see the field much outside of injuries. He's behind KG, Toney, Robinson, and Shepard.

I think he'll make the team since he's on the last year of his deal and with the way injuries love to hit that group he'll be needed at some point to pitch in.
