Sure we're familiar with Fast, Stepan, Smith, DeAngelo, Skjei and Raanta, but they're also familiar with us. Speaking of Raanta, it'll be interesting to see what Rod the Bod does now that Freddy Andersen is healthy. Raanta has had an excellent playoffs, but Andersen was one of the top goalies during the regular season.
One thing that we will have in this series that we didn't really have in Pittsburgh: LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS of our fans.
Rangers fans always show up in droves in Carolina, so it should be fun.
Any word on Goodrow? It would be huge if we could replace Reaves with Goodrow on the fourth line.
I'm very close to buying tickets to Game 1. Trying to get a few things ironed on. They are around $100-$150 to sit upstairs right now.
no one knew that rule. I'd bet decent money Koho didn't even know it until Jennifer Botterrill brought it up.
Every broadcast I have seen since 2019 (probably thousands) when the rule came into effect as soon as someone's helmet came off every broadcaster said "now he's got to leave the ice"
anyone claiming they knew this rule before last night is more likely than not, lying.
Definitely a tough rule, but in the playoffs. If your head coach doesn’t know the minutia of the rule book - that HAS to fall on the coaching staff.
More so, and I can’t remember the details of it, but I’m 99% sure a year or two ago Sullivan misunderstood the exact same rule. Also in a playoff game, if I am remembering this right.
I knew I wasn’t crazy, the helmet thing DID happen to them last year. Found an article which I’ll link.
But even better, check out this quote lol. Nit only did he KNOW the rule, he got clarity on it from the NHL. One year ago.
“We’re actually asking for a little bit more clarity in that circumstance because it’s our understanding that John can stay in the battle there,” Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan said on Friday. “Obviously, we get outnumbered because of it. So we’re actually asking for clarity on that from the league because it’s my understanding that he can stay in that battle and look for the opportune time to get to the bench.” Sullivan knew - ( New Window )

Game 3 against the Islanders last year. 3:55 of this video.
Just pathetic from Sullivan. Pampered franchise, no surprise they can't handle a loss without complaining about something that didn't go their way. And he's lying about it, obviously Link - ( New Window )
but it really is gross when the coaches and players are wet blankets about this stuff afterward.
Handshakes and then stand in the pocket and take the hits in the presser. Don't be a baby.
It's a bad look. I'd like to rewatch the play again, but as I recall Letang had time to get in position coming in to replace the helmet-less defenseman. And Marino had the puck and turned it over. Lame.

I do think the helmet loss/line change absolutely contributed to the goal. By the time letang got on the ice it was hard for him to pick up where to go and who to cover - if you watch it you will notice letang go to the front of the net and cover no one and the outlet pass caught him by surprise leading to the turnover and Mika wide open, but that is on the Pens as we now know and not making sure their players know the rules.
Also that shot was a f-ing rocket from Mika. That part of the play gets lost and not talked about enough. He is such a streaky player. He is on fire right now.

That's because half of NY lives here and the other half in Florida.
Carolina is not a particularly physical team. What they are is a very fast team, and Reaves might be the slowest man in hockey. For that reason, I'd rather see Hunt or even Brodzinski.
My ideal fourth line would be Motte-Goodrow-Hunt, but I doubt we see Goodrow anytime soon if he has a fractured ankle as rumored.
It definitely caused some confusion. But the Rangers still had to execute the shot and pass. Mika ripped it.
Sullivan is definitely implying that Lafreniere pulled the helmet off purposefully to provide the advantage. That seems hard to believe. It's a tough break for them, sure. But I find the excuse-making from the coach and players pretty unbecoming.

They have to sit Reaves. At least to start the series. 100% agree

absolutely agree, I do think they could have called a penalty on Lafreniere but I'm glad they didn't that was really a two-way scrum that results in a lost helmet.
and Mika's snipe is the real story.
I wouldn't pay attention to PIT or their reaction, I'd just move on an enjoy the win.
After being invisible through the first five games, he's been on fire. Not only scoring, but he dominated in the faceoff circle too.
And Igor quietly played an outstanding game, keeping them alive when things looked grim. That was the closest he's played to his best in the playoffs. Hopefully he's over the jitters or whatever was going on that made him look ordinary. They need dominant Igor to have a chance.

Brodzinski you can make a case for. Hunt was terrible against PITT and you never saw him again. I’d be shocked if they went away from Reavo though. Apparently, all coaches have guys they love despite all rationality. Reavo will hit people, but he definitely is glacier slow and that’s more of an issue against a deep CAR team.
This series is playing with house money for me. I hope the effort and performance is competitive, but if they lose to a better team, then so be it.

Zibanejad pulling out that performance in the faceoff dot was really impressive. We were getting absolutely dominated there. Over the course of a long season, I understand why faceoff success isn't considered that important. But in a short series, it makes a difference. Huge performance.
Another shoutout, K'Andre Miller. Just eating minutes back there. Only just starting to scratch the surface of his potential. It's a short list of defenseman with the length and reach to make that poke check and then the skating ability to accelerate and draw the penalty. Exciting player
Just my opinion but Gallant needs to throttle back a bit on Fox. He averaged 28 minutes a game for the series and by game 7 he really looked worn down and fatigued at times. I get that the third pair isn't particularly good but the minutes need to be spread around a bit more than they have been.
Braun played 8:28 and Schneider 6:25. Understandable in game 7 but definitely not sustainable. Torts used to do this for an entire series and the effects began to show. Never forget Stu Bickel playing two minutes in a triple OT game against the Caps.
Agreed, Greg. Might have to lose a few battles early on to win the war and keep guys fresh for another long series. Part of the reason also I'd like to see Reaves come out and give a more capable 4th line 10-12 minutes a night

And from what I recall on the post game on TBS last night, that really wasn't his stance or at least I don't remember him being that outright ridiculous.
I guess he felt more emboldened on twitter than live TV.
How did that guy, out of all the possible options, get placed in the studio with McHugh, Botterill, Ace, and Tocchet?
And Gretzky! The guy is on the same fucking panel as Wayne Gretzky. What the hell is Biz's appeal? I'm still trying to figure it out. He seems like a wannabe Pat McAfee with way less intellect and appeal.
Not sure if anyone listens to the spittin chiclets podcast, I enjoy it and find Biz entertaining, but might not be for everyone. There were some friendly wagers on the series amongst the group. Just trolling

I like the TNT studio show much better. Don't mind ESPN, but I don't think the legendary players they've brought in like Chelios and Mess have a ton of interesting things to say. But just a different perspective for me.
I think both game broadcasts are really good though. Strong announcers. Both miles better than NBC production. I do miss Doc though

I had zero memory of any player with that name. So he was a scrub who played for a few years? I agree with you all - how the hell did he get that job?
his fame is more from Spittin' chiclets podcast than from actually playing hockey, but to hear him talk you'd think he was a shade below Gretzky in accolades and accomplishments on the ice.
of what I think is the most listened to hockey podcast. I don't know, might just be me but I think he's pretty solid on TV. We've definitely seen in all sports, being the best player doesn't necessarily equate to being good on TV. And in this case, he's just trolling on twitter because he lost a wager with his podcast hosts when they won
No big deal though, different strokes
I don't do podcasts so I have no idea what that is
I thought I read/heard that he got offers from TNT/ESPN but chose to stay at MSG.
Maybe because he's a Rangers fan so it's kind of his dream job and his homerism is always on display IMO (and not in a bad way). He's not Jack Edwards level homer, but he's definitely always commenting and speaking with a NY Rangers bias.
Now we have a team that a tough team. We play scumbag hockey? How about Look at the penalities asshole. Someone should have take Crosby out with a massive hit yesterday. BTW I like being the bully finally.
Vally has been one of the best analysts around for a while now, and Hank is better than I expected.
Absolutely, Vally, that studio clip of him dragging himself forward on his knees after gwg was hilarious. Every game he comes up with good insight, player positioning, movement, defensive movement, etc.
Hank has improved, a lot, as the season has gone on into SCP, lends gravitas as to mood/tenor in the locker room. Earlier in the season, as a HOF keeper and an AHL keeper, they were kind of tip-toeing around each other, but they've gotten comfortable with each other and it's fun to watch.
and still refuse to acknowledge what a dynamic player he is on the ice
He and Slavin together are what makes the Hurricanes so tough. They constantly push the puck and are good skaters. Slavin is also a good defender (Tony D not so much).
Rangers are very lumbering compared to them. But it's hard not to get caught up playing their high octane style.
That said, playoffs usually favor the more physical team. Rangers really need to come out on the forecheck and also hammer these guys.
