Linebacker depth 2022

How do you see this current roster of LBs fit into Winks D?
Who starts where, and how soon do you see McFadden and Beavers contributing?
I’ve said before I think McFadden is a starter

It’s really only Crowder in front of him and as much as. I rooted for Crowder he wasn’t ideal for the position. As my son goes to IU I watched almost all of McFadden’s games and saw him twice in person. He a player and the spot next to Martinez is perfect for him.

Think the only set in stone starter is Martinez.

Crowder, mcfadden and beavers let the best man win, to play next to blake. I think Cam brown makes the team due to his abilities on special teams. Carter coughlin probably the odd man out.
Martinez (if he's healthy), Thibs and Ojulari are locks.

Every other spot should be up for grabs. Of the second or third year guys, Roche and Smith probably have the best chance of sticking.
When I think back to the 1980s, it is really hard for me to accept

That inside LBs now often weigh less than 240 lbs. I know this is a different NFL but those guys still need to be run stoppers when only 3 defensive linemen are playing.

And this is going to be so different from Judge’s first year where the Giants drafted a lot of lightweight LBs to play on special teams.

Yes, I think McFadden could start from Game 1 and Beavers will be first backup inside. Among the holdovers, Coughlin might have the best chance to win a primary backup spot. I doubt the 2nd Inside backer will get many plays, as I see a lot of 3-3-5 alignments.

I like to reminess about "LB depth 1986".... LT, Harry, Banks, Reasons, Pepper, Headen, Hunt, and Jones.
From the Brown/Coughlin/Brunson/Crowder class of 2020...

... we might see two or three occupy veteran slots on the Practice Squad (subject to finalization of the 2022 rules). Swapping, say, Tomon Fox with Carter Coughlin or Darrian Beavers with Tae Crowder as a backup saves $190K on the cap and has no significant downside once the vet clears waivers. If injuries hit or special teams need a boost, the vet is there for promotion to the roster. The rookie isn't just cheaper; he's also much more likely to be part of the team's future.

Of course, there will be options on the street in September, but the incumbents will have a big advantage over most of those free agents: four months learning the system.
