I think they would have taken Ekwonu over Thibodeaux at #5 and hoped Thibodeaux was still there at #7. Since they didn't, I think they had very similar grades on Ekwonu and Neal. I don't know if they had Ekwonu over Neal or vice versa, but my guess is it would have still been Neal.
They have liked their chances at right tackle later in the draft than at ER. This is the kind of question I'd love to ask if I were having drinks with Schoen and slipped him some truth serum.
weird twist of fate they may have ended up with 1 of the 2 players they didn't pick. for all our sakes i hope he doesn't go on to be larry allen or something crazy like that.
the #5 pick if they hadn't traded down last year. So, who would they have selected last year? If they had selected Slater last year, do they pick a G at 5?

good point - they probably would have taken slater or vera tucker, so probably fair to expect they wouldn't have had OL as high.
so in that instance it's likely Thibodeaux. I'd imagine need wouldn't have elevated Garrett Wilson into their top 6, but perhaps the grades with others in the next tier were close enough they would have more seriously considered a trade down?
thank you in advance for helping me cope with passing on Ekwonu if he's the next Larry Allen.
I would bet my money on Neal but I still dont knw why Schoen didnt say Neal was the best tackle on the board. his comment was they took Neal because Icky was gone and they were close.
I still think it was Neal with Ekwonu 2nd and Thibs 3rd based on Need/Value. Much harder to find an OT than a DE after round 1.
Ekwonu may have been the pick but only because he has a higher ceiling
Neal is a Day 1 RT (Ekwonu would have to learn it) and that’s what the Giants need right now.
After a couple of years, Neal can be a Pro Bowl caliber RT. After 3 years, Ekwonu may be an All Pro caliber tackle or guard. I will take the more proven player.
If Giants valued Ekwonu over Thibs/Neal..in any meaningful way he’d have been picked at 5.
They said Neal/Ekwonu were close..and the tiebreaker is..Neal more experienced at playing both tackle spots and the better pass protector.
If it is a passing league and we keep adding wideouts yearly, and are trying to find out what we have in Jones, taking the better pass protector is the right move.

Schoen had no reason to say “Ekwonu” except if he believed it. Not the way I would have gone if I was the Giants GM. However, I certainly understand the Panthers taking Ekwonu. Their needs were different.

I'm incredibly confident they would have gone tackle. There's no shot they risk going OL in round 2.
With no OL going in the Top 4 the Giants did not need to take one at 5 if Neal and someone else were ranked evenly and both clearly above OL3 on their board. On the other hand, there was probably a dropoff from Thibodeaux and Carolina looked like they were willing to trade down. So Thibodeaux and OL2 was better than OL1 + ???? unless they were willing to take 2 OL in the Top 7.
Round 2 likely would have looked at Mafe or the Penn State guy if they did not have the second 1st Round pick.

I didn't read Schoen's comment that way; I read it more as "we expected Carolina to take a tackle at 6 and because they were so close on our board we were quite happy to get the 'other tackle.'"
I think if Ekwonu had been higher than Neal at all they would have drafted him at 5 and hoped for KT to make it to 7. I trust them when they say they were side by side.
In the odd case where both tackles were still there at 7... I do wonder if the Giants would have chanced it and tried to trade down a few spots.
But it worked out as well as it could for us: none of the top OL taken 1-4 so we knew we could take Thibs @ 5 & someone would be there @ 7. I fear, had we taken Neal @ 5, someone would have traded up to 6 with Carolina & taken Thibs. I don't think Thibs lasts until 7.
we took Slater last year. This led to Gates not getting hurt. The OL plays better. We win 2 more games down the stretch. JJ never runs the sneaks. So he doesn’t rant. So he and DG are retained.
Therefore, we don’t pick 5, we pick 10. DG picks a long snapper as JJ emphasizes the hog mollie of STs. “We don’t worry about positional value or what the computah guys say,” said Gettleman miming a computer keyboard. We got owah guy, ok kid? Toots? Sweetie? Love muffins? Dahlia’?”

Not really and I was an Ekwonu fan. It's possible Ekwonu would've been their choice, but if the Panthers had selected Neal and the Giants took Ekwonu and the reporters asked "Why Ekwonu?" he'd have answered "Because Neal was taken at 6." He was just pointing out the reality of having two guys evenly graded and one of them is off the board...so you take the other one.
